Dark, and dense, and terrifying.
A nightmare that reads like a personal account.
If you like horror, this one is for you.

Absolutely dreadful.

The introductory sequence - a dream - is a mess. Shifting point of view, changing tense, it is day, it is night, the house is white, now it is a burned out wreck, now it has mold or something on it. It is now, it is then - the author lost track of where he was going with this but kept writing anyway. Written by somebody competent, some of the ideas in this sequence could have been used to good effect but this writer just didn't have the skill. The writer just threw in everything in no particular order and hoped readers wouldn't know any better and would pass it off as "uncontrolled dream sequence".

I kept plowing through after the dream sequence but after a while it was too much work (and cringing) to make the occasional flash of competence worthwhile. It is unreadable. I tossed it back unfinished.

The writer must have improved after this book - I see there are more novels and that these were well received. Or maybe this book is just that occasional lemon that writers sometimes produce. Either way I was not the least surprised when I looked this book up on the internet and found out it was self-published. It could never have been published any other way.

The author would be better off removing this book from the market and pretending it never happened. Or removing it from the market and re-writing the entire thing from scratch, maybe hiring a good editor. This book has to be having a negative effect on his reputation as a writer.

Although I have been aware of Conrad Jones as an author for quite some time, this is the first of his books I have read.

Written in the first person, the author recounts how a satanic cult is trying to kill him. During the course of research for his new book, Conrad’s police detective friend Neil helped him secure an interview with a murder suspect, Jennifer Booth. Jennifer is psychic and Conrad and Jennifer seem to have a telekinetic connection. Life then starts to spiral out of control - everyone involved is dying and Conrad is next.

In a central role is Evie Jones, his Staffordshire Bull Terrier and she is certainly a star!

This novella is a bit gory and graphic at times but is well written and takes you on a rollercoaster ride as it whips along at a cracking pace. I read it in one sitting in an afternoon and the story just got better and better.

Either Conrad Jones is as mad as a box of frogs or the truth is indeed much stranger than fiction!

I will definitely look out for his other books!

After reading the books with Tank,Grace,Chen & co, this one was a real let down. Reminded me of a bad Tales of the Unexpected. Thank goodness it was only 103 pages. A stand alone story written in the 1st person and not part of the Soft Target series. Not impressed.
