When David invited his best friend along on vacation, he never expected them to fall in love...
Spending four days in a tropical paradise with Jack is a dream come true. For years, David lived a lie and denied his attraction to Jack. Now that they’re together in an isolated Caribbean resort, however, he finally sheds his denial and admits what he really wants—to be Jack’s lover.
Jack is more than willing to introduce David to the life he has always fantasized about. Their sizzling nighttime encounters confirm David’s long-hidden desires.
But what will happen when they leave the resort? Will David sacrifice everything to start a new life with Jack? Or will he go back to his old ways and risk losing the best friend he ever had?

Well, if you’re looking for a super easy, super low emotional commitment beach read, this fits the bill. To me, this book embodies the spirit of “mindless tropes.” To be blunt, the plot consists of pretty unimaginative situations like a “straight” best friend (David) realizing he’s actually in love with his gay best friend (Jack), David waffling over whether or not he can come out of the closet for Jack, Jack waffling over whether or not he can accept a relationship with a closeted gay man, and how they magically resolve some major emotional issues in the span of four days.
Adding to the literary lethargy is the melodramatic turn these characters take. As an angst queen, I tend to love self-flagellation and unrequited love and all that jazz, but the presentation here just felt gratuitously schmaltzy. Take, for example, Jack’s ex-boyfriend. The man never appears on page and we don’t even really know he’s any major force in the book—until David reacts negatively to a PDA, only then does the narration indicate that Jack’s ex was abusive. Without any previous exposition about Jack’s ex, this presentation felt unpleasantly contrived to me.
While I felt let down by the lack of character depth and the lackluster plot devices, at least there was a lot of sex. And we get to see Jack and David go from zero to sixty rather quickly. Perhaps it’s because I’m a dirty old lady, but on-page sex scenes (almost) always pique my interest. It gave me something to look forward to and something I could enjoy, flaws and all (like why the fluff did David offer Jack a blowjob last Christmas? Why is it David who instigates their first intentional sexual encounter when he’s the one who’s half denying he’s gay?).
David has been in love with his childhood friend, Jack, for years but for those same years he has hidden his feelings so deep that even he is no longer sure. Seeing how hard Jack had things when he came out to friends and family, David is scared to admit that he is in love with a man; he's still in denial and dates women. He and his latest girlfriend, Alison, were supposed to go on the romantic getaway but two weeks before they're due to leave, Alison dumps him, citing all the time he's spending with Jack as the reason.
So David chucks caution to the wind and invites Jack on the Caribbean holiday instead.
Their holiday is one of erotic exploration for both of them, but more than that, it is a coming together with an emotional connection, not just a physical one - and the physical scenes are scorching hot.
For a short novella, we get quite a good depth of character, even the other guests at the resort are not just cardboard cut-outs. David's insecurities are well-drawn, and as you get the story from both Jack and David's point of view, you can see that despite all his bravado and not ashamed to be gay bluster, Jack also has them too.
The friends to lovers trope has been done quite a few times, so any author tackling it needs to have a story that stands out and I think this one does. Jack and David are interesting characters, both with things in their past that they want to overcome and they are very likeable heroes.
It was a hot, romantic story and very easy to read, the writing flows so well. I just had a few niggles with some of the love scenes - soap as lube? Ouch! And I'm afraid that the word 'dick' made me giggle - it's used here mostly to call someone an idiot, not for fun, sexytimes ;) So as I was reading, it was like - wait, what - he wants him to touch his idiot? That's just a personal thing, it'll probably not bother anyone else.
All in all a very good read if you're after some romance with obstacles to be overcome before the happily ever after.

This is a story of David and Jack. Best friends since childhood. Attracted to each other since early on, but didn't do anything about it. Jack came out in college and dated men, and for the past two years lived with his boyfriend, Andre. Meanwhile David kept his feeling inside and went on to date Allison. They planned to have a romantic vacation in a resort at a Caribean island, but two weeks prior to the vacation, David broke up with her. Instead cancelling it, he invited Jack. The book is about how the two deal with their attraction to each other.
While the plot is standard childhood-best-friends-turn-lovers, I really liked the execution. We get to learn the MCs backgrounds. It doesn't get sappy, since they both have to deal with their own demon and the big question of what'd happen when they return home. They also have to deal with the questions and look from other guests at the resort. There are plenty of sex, but they are there as part of the story as David gradually gives up himself to Jack.
Four Days with Jack by Kelli A. Wilkins is a great story about best friends Jack and David. Two friends who have been in love with each other for years, and, for various reasons, afraid to let it out, finally give in while on vacation. 2.5 stars. Ok short m/m romance about a guy who's been in love with his best friend for years, but has been in denial about it. Unfortunately, the writing was choppy and the numerous unclear pronoun references drove me crazy.
This was a good short story about best friends who are really more. The angst of David's character over his acceptance of his sexuality was nicely portrayed.
