Shirayuki's naturally bright-red hair has gotten her into a lot of trouble forcing her to flee to the neighboring kingdom... but fortunately it allowed her to meet the prince of Clarines, Zen! Thus starts a friendship between a most unusual herbalist and a lovestruck prince.
A new story arc has started with Mihaya, the random mountain kidnapper from volume 1. I thought this was a fun use of a minor character you never thought you’d see again. It’s crazy that it’s about Shirayuki though, I found the motive for this quite mysterious.
Then we have this subplot with Prince Izana and an invitation. Honestly I just didn’t get anyone’s motives! I get that he wants to test Shirayuki and Zen’s feelings. To see if they will do and be what is necessary to be together. But what good will going do?
This series has a slow meandering pace but I find the different plots quite unexpected and fun with some great character reactions. We are getting in deep with some mysterious new antagonists to Zen and Shirayuki’s love. I can’t wait to read the next volume and figure out why they are going to such efforts.
Zen had better watch out - it looks as if Obi and Raj are developing feelings for Shirayuki. Not that he actually needs to worry, which is part of what's so nice about this series: at the end of the day, we can be sure that True Love will conquer all. These are just some interesting roadblocks to make the journey more exciting.
So, despite there being 17 volumes already released in german, this is the last volume I currently own. I mean, it doesn't end on THAT much of a cliffhanger, so while I won't buy next volumes right away, I'll definitely buy volumes 6,7,8 and 9 as soon as I can.
I'm not entirely sure, up to which volume manga is covered in anime. But I'd be guessing around 10? Or 12? Depends on pacing.
Again, if you like wholesome couples, close to no missunderstandings, royal-and-commoner trope, amazing friendships, loveable cast of characters, portrayal of pharmacist/herbalist lifestyle in a manga and just in general very feel-good mood, you owe it to yourself to read this manga, whenever you can.
Trouble brews for Shirayuki again as her red hair attracts unwanted attention once more while at the same time, she's invited for a visit back to her home, Tanbarun!
I enjoyed this volume a lot cause things seemed to be developing towards a mystery/action vibe (I think I know which arc will follow next but I'm still excited) plus we also get to see a subtle change in Obi!
Another really fun volume, though I really wish Izana would keep his imperious nose to himself… I mean, I get why he’s testing Shirayuki and Zen but it’s still annoying. 😒
The whole potential kidnapping plot has me really intrigued as to why and who these people even are. And Zen and Shirayuki’s trust in each other is pure gold—they are just so precious. 🥰 Obi, I like you, but you better not mess things up for my ship.
And the whole getting lost and stuck under the castle had me laughing, especially the part where everyone was like “what does this button do?” and made everything worse, lol! That was really fun, and Prince Raj is even showing improvement, wonder of wonders.
Interested to see where this goes!
‼️Content‼️
Language: what the hell; ass
Violence: a sparring match
Sexual: mild suggestive hints
Drug/Alcohol: a character drinks from an alcohol bottle
I continue to love each volume of this series. If you have watched the anime, we are still in anime content. This volume is the beginning of an arc that was unexpectedly one of my favorites in the anime. I'm so excited to keep going.
Could do with a little more conflict, though I still love the setting and the relationship between Zen and Shirayuki. It definitely promises more developments on the drama front next time, at least, but outside of the return of some characters from the very beginning of the series it wasn’t as heavy on the story momentum as other volumes.
Such a cute series! The backgrounds are lovely as well. This volume brings some new characters in, and a new plot. I'm quite interested to see what's going on with "Pretty boy"
How could this volume leave me on a cliffhanger like that 😂 I missed the interactions with Zen, Kiki, and Mitsuhide this volume, but Raj has grown since the last timebI saw him, so it was still fun to read!
A very good volume, I love the direction that its taking with a little added outside interest in shirayuki, I'm looking forward to seeing this plot developing
While I do think that reading these are mostly boring compared to watching the show, this manga series is the only slightly good thing I have going on for me. Considering my slump.
This was a very good volume I love how the relationship between Shirayuki and Zen is going. I'm also loving how Obi's charcter is progressing and that they're using him more as the series goes on. I'm excited for what's instore.
I feel things really took off with this volume and not sure if that was because this was fresh content I hadn't reread before or if things just sort of took off on their own. Either way though, I LOVED this volume!
I never expected that a previous character would show up and throw some havoc back into Shirayuki's life. However, this time she isn't alone. While she wasn't necessarily alone the last time, I think this time she has friends who are in her corner and is being assured she doesn't have to take things all upon herself. I LOVED seeing Zen so grumpy and upset about everything because he really wears his heart on his sleeve and absolutely love to see it!
That "match" between Zen and Obi wasn't something I was expecting! :o While I am hardcore #TeamZen, Obi is amazing! I really do love seeing the moments where he shines and appreciated how he had moments to really prove himself to those around him. I think because of the outcome, Obi has really earned people's trust and felt proud of him. <3
Once again I feel SO proud of Shirayuki! When she tells someone that she wants to improve their relationship, I was pretty shocked given everything that had happened in previous volumes. She is such an admirable heroine and totally cheering her on!
And Zen's big brother…
Never thought I would come to hate him less and less, but that's exactly how I feel…*nervous laughter*
Fantastic volume that had me looking for as much as merch I could find online! LOL!
Zen had made his feelings clear to Shirayuki, and they both are basically dating now, so on the romance front, things are sailing smoothly. But parts of Shirayuki's past come knocking again, like Mihaya (who was an antagonist a few volumes ago) coming to inform them that someone (a pretty boy, Obi reminds) is searching for Shirayuki. Meanwhile, Prince Raji has sent an invitation to Shirayuki to come visit, as a show of gratitude for her advice to him when he had visited Wistalia. Izana basically ordering Shirayuki to go, and with the threat that is searching for her, it seems like a good choice to get out of town for a while. And while Zen is tied to his position, he, fortunately has some loyal retainers with whom he can entrust her safety.
Firstly, I like the call-backs to previous minor characters, like Mihaya and that Count Haruka, who have become frenemies, if not allies, now. There was one hilarious panel where Haruka, Shirayuki and Obi are in the same place, and it is pointed out how awkward it is, when one of them had hired the other to kill the other. I think it is interesting how Shirayuki is rebuilding her interactions with antagonistic characters like them, as well as the Raji, who is surprised she accepted the invitation. There's no Big Bad kind of villain or Nemesis in this story, if you think about it. Even Izana, who is sort of a conflict for Zen and Shirayuki has his reasons for making life a bit difficult for them. Meanwhile, in Tanbarun, we get to see them being awkward around each other, and the whole palace being absolutely obsessed with Shirayuki, who is there as a guest and not a prince's prize. We also get to meet Raji's adorable younger siblings! And Obi is awesome in this volume, and you can see the scenes where his affection for both Zen and Shirayuki are clear. Sadly, I don't think my OT3 dreams will be realized.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.
A lot of old and familiar faces are turning up once again in this volume. Sorata-sensei does well at easing the reader back into memories of these characters, which helps in showing us their overall growth between then and now. There’s an awful lot going on in this volume, but we mostly focus on the relationship between Zen and Shirayuki, as well as the connection between Shirayuki and Prince Raj from the start of this entire story. Since their last meeting, it appears that Prince Raj has grown quite a bit and it’s truly nice to see. I genuinely do like his character now, and I hope (and don’t doubt) to see him and Shirayuki continue on good terms, even if it’ll likely be eternally at least a bit awkward. Speaking of awkward, Shirayuki and Zen’s relationship is going at an extremely slow pace but they’re doing well. It’s nice to see these two supporting each other as always and continuously challenging each other in new ways. I don’t doubt they’ll eternally find ways to push the other into further growth. Humans are never done maturing, after all. Lastly, we sure have a lot of Obi this volume, likely due to his popularity from Japanese readers at the time. Really though, he hides a lot behind his almost at times blank expressions. He knows or feels something he won’t communicate to anyone else. He won’t betray, but it feels as though he may vanish with naught but a trace someday tomorrow, in another lifetime, or somewhere in between.
Volume 5 looks like it's kicking off its first long arc. Shirayuki is going back to her home land with Obi while Zen remains at the palace. This is the first time they've been separated since they confessed their feelings for each other. I hoping to feel some long distance longing.
Obi is a great character. We don't know too much about him and he seems to keep things close to the chest so I hope this means we're going to learn more about his character.
We've also got a flashback to vol 1 with the guy to kidnapped Shirayuki. He's actually a prince and now wants to be employed by Zen. Seems sus. Also Izana is testing out Zen, so we'll see how long it takes for him to be won over.
I really like that Zen and Shirayuki are being more open with each other, even if they're still shy about it. They fell hard fast, so I'm hoping a deeper connection develops in interesting ways.

short series review: In this complete overhaul of the Snow White fairytale, the "princess" is a herbalist with flaming red hair. One prince is demanding that she become his mistress, the other is the one who falls for the poisoned apple. That's just the start of their story. This series is like the best of all the Disney Princess movies wrapped up into one, with none of the awkward musical numbers... and all of the strong girls who know how to take care of themselves.
Shirayuki has been invited by Prince Raj to Tanbarun for a banquet. Prince Zen sends Obi with her to protect her while he continues his duties at the palace and waits patiently for Shirayukis return. At the palace in Tanbarun, Prince Raj is awkward around Shirayuki and doesn’t know what to do with her for the 7 days she will be staying there. We are introduced to Princes Raj’s brother and sister in this book, they are twins and very mischievous
Another great installment of this sweet lighthearted manga. This is the start of probably my least favorite arc in the anime. There are parts that I really enjoyed but the way it starts is slightly annoying. A lot of the conflict of it could have been avoided had a certain character been upfront about their intentions then the main conflict of it could have been avoided.
Nitpicking, I know. But it just feels like unnecessary conflict.
