Rate this book
Stopping for a quick meal on a road trip home for the Fourth of July, a couple is caught up in a surprising, life-changing situation in a small Iowa farm town. Accused of the murder when a local's body is found, linked to the crime by the a sheriff who's probably in way over his head, a husband is held in jail while wife secretly sets about trying to prove his innocence. Her investigation uncovers some unexpected details and she realizes there are things about his past she never knew. Then, with the sheriff's department woefully understaffed for the huge weekend celebration, the husband is allowed out of jail (sheriff keeps his car keys) and the couple takes the time to meet and befriend many of the people from the community. At the same time, a local television reporter, in town for some human interest stories, stumbles upon the crime and the sheriff's apprehension of the visitor, and the story grows to an unexpected finish.
