Hole: A Ghost Story

Rate this book
Indian Summer-- it's the time of year after the leaves change color, when the weather is bright and warm and winter's cold and slush still seems months and months away. Summer's last hurrah. For nine-year-old Eddie Gilmarten and his mother, who have fled to his aunt's home in the Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois, Aunt Gene's isolated rural property is the perfect place to escape an alcoholic father. There are caves to explore and sprawling wooded hills to play upon, but all is not fine in this idyllic country setting. Eddie and his Ma aren't the only souls who have sought sanctuary on his aunt's sprawling property, although they might be the only innocents who have done so. There is a dark entity at large, one that might or might not be a figment of Eddie's fertile imagination, and a man of secrets with a twisted mind and a terrible appetite for innocence. Yet, even in the midst of pain there is hope, and valor may sometimes be found in the hearts of the wicked. For Frank O'Keefe-- the bank robber known as "the Fox"-- Eddie and his mother might not just be his only chance for survival... They might also be the only chance for his soul's redemption.

Indian Summer is the latest novel by the indie best selling author of The Oldest Living Vampire Tells All and Mort. This novel contains adult situations, language and violence. It may not be suitable for younger readers. Approx. 80,000 words. Released June 2011 by Cobra Ebooks.

Joseph Duncan

Born in Southern Illinois, Joseph was raised in a very liberal home environment and was exposed at an early age to the classic underground comic book scene of the sixties and seventies, as well as European graphic novels by artists like Moebius, Enki Bilal and Milo Manara. At age 9, he was reading Tolkien and Stephen King. He wrote his first novella at age 10. If you want to read the same old formulaic pop lit, don't bother with Joseph's fiction. The novels of Joseph Duncan are challenging, subversive and fantastical, merging genres and pushing the boundaries of propriety and good taste. If you have an aversion to dark subject matter, gratuitous sex and extreme violence, stay far away from Joseph's books. Far. Far. Away!

I was happily reading a different book on my kindle when I came across this book (Hole: A ghost story) on Amazon. I decided to "Look inside the Book" and I read the first chapter. Straight away I was hooked! I never leave a book unfinished, but the book that I had been reading was forgotten and I downloaded Hole and started reading it there and then.

I sat up till 6am reading this book after downloading it. I don't know what it was about the book but I just couldn't stop reading it. There were parts of the story that really hit a nerve with me. I found myself wishing that I could become a ghost and come back to seek revenge with people who have wronged me in the past. The author dealt with the sensitive topics in this book very well, he really did his research. He explained the fears and thoughts that people often carry around deep inside themselves, he explained this so so well.

This book has a great story. I loved the characters. I actually cried at parts of the story, my heart was breaking for Mary. At the start of the book I hated her husband, but as the story went on I really liked him. I even felt sorry for him. I really loved this book, the whole ghost part was genius! I can't recommend this book enough! I am really glad that I found it. This book opened up some old wounds for me, but sometimes that can help a bit......

I am really looking forward to reading other books by this author. He has an amazing talent at telling a story and keeping the story interesting ALL of the time. I loved this book.

Light on the supernatural and heavy on the character development. Quite a pleasant surprise to find this much depth in what I thought would simply be good ghost story. And to top it all off the plot really moved. I bought this on Kindle for a couple of dollars and boy did I get value for my money!

I found this story very sad, but kept on reading it anyway. I was pulled into the pain of the past & present as the story unfolded. The surprise twist in the story was good & helped end it well.

The story was top-notch, but the writing and editing were quite rough around the edges—I'm guessing it's self-published. The narrative had a great pace, multi-dimensional characters, and adequate logic. I liked the blend of heartache, horror, drama, even romance. I would LOVE to redesign the cover art. All in all, a very entertaining read, I flew through it on my Kindle. I would probably read another title by this author.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, some of the gutter-talk could be toned down a little bit. Some of the references to genitalia and sex in general reminded me of the kinds of things below-average ninth graders say.

The subtitle may be a bit misleading...

This short story is not so much about ghosts or hauntings as it is (psychic) power and corruption and a family torn apart. Not a bad story - graphic, at times - with interesting characters and a straightforward (if predictable) plot. It is possible that I would have liked it better had I not been expecting a different focus.

It's a pretty simple ghost story with truly exceptional character development. It's a very short novel - more of a novella I'd say - but he packs in so much personality and emotion for each character that I truly missed them all when the book was over. The characters are so rich they could have supported a much longer novel.

Wonderful story

Well written, with characters that are very real, and all too flawed, some you love and some you hate, with a supernatural element thrown in. Also very sad, with a satisfying ending.

Not a ghost story in the way one expects.

Hole delivers an uncomfortable but strong narrative and the first few chapters certainly aren't for the faint of heart. I had my doubts but it all comes together quite solidly by the end.

True page turner

I finished it in one day! Great read. Surprisingly haunting. The characters were realistic. With each chapter mysteries revealed themselves. Enjoyable!

Great read!!

Really interesting story. Not so much a 'horror' story as it is more of a psychological thriller. Very good book!
