Lots of translating, writing, speaking practise and some more reading practise and writing characters. It's very useful to have a Chinese dictionary handy as some characters are not translated or you might have forgotten the pinyin or the meaning. I use

I used this book to learn Chinese while in China. It was the first actual workbook I completed and I enjoyed the experience so much I told myself I would be conversational in mandarin. I'm not where I want to be yet but I do recommend this book.
