I was hesitant about purchasing this book but, my cousin read The Cartel Series and she repeatedly talked about The Murder Mamas and how BAD they were. Well, first this book is called the Murder Mamas but there is only one Murder Mama in it. The story is sooo slow I unknowingly fell asleep a couple of times reading it. Some books make sense when the format of the story jumps back and forth but because this book was slow, boring and fell flat in the DRAMA department it became hard to follow. I forced myself about halfway in to continue, with the hope it would pick up and get better but, to my chagrin, that didn't happen. I wasted time and money on this one and am a bit dismayed that I have others by the authors, in paperback, on my shelf that I also purchased based on 5 star reviews on Amazon. I hope that those books will redeem this one.
I strongly suggest reading The Cartel, The Cartel 2, The Cartel 3 ...then this book. I read this book first and you can read it with the other...but this book is a made from a figure in the other books... So to get the entire history...Start with The Cartel Trilogy.
I was a little surprise and excited about Murder Mamas because I had read The Cartel novels by these two arthors, and i thought this book would be something like a prequel, or what happened after the events of The Cartel to give readers a little closer. No such luck though. This book really had nothing to do with the Murder Mamas as a whole as you would think from the title. Yes it had a Murder Mama in it but she was in my opinion just a secondary character used for the plot line. I gave this book two stars because, it felt like i was reading a rough draft of the real book, the timeline was completely off, things stated as a fact or characteristic of the character early on in the novel was changed later as if what was said earlier wasnt said at all (i hope you can follow that), then at some point i was completely lost because it just jumped from the current situation and i guess did a flashback but the flashback didnt add up to the spot in the novel where it was suppose to. It was like the authors had a sudden urge to change the events in the previous chapters and forgot to erase! This novel was way to messy and unorganized, and i am quite upset that i bought it based on the title. I am a somewhat fan of Ashley and Jaquavis but this was a bomb (and not in a good way) the only thing that saves this book from getting one star or no stars, if i could, is that unlike a whole lot of Ashley and Jaquavis books it didnt leave me stuck with a cliffhanger and the promise of a part 2. I am very happy that they just ended it. Also i am pleased to know that The Cartel 4 is coming out and i pray that this will be the last and i am finally given real closer with the series. All in all i wouldnt recommend this novel to anyone, but if you are a fan of The Cartel then i think you may have to read this to know about certain characters that might come up in part 4, why else would they reference it the way they did. Enjoy?
" Murder Mamas" By Ashley & JaQuavis left me on the edge of my seat. After a robbery goes wrong, Robyn is sentenced to death by lethal injection and Aries goes on the run. After starting life over in a new place with a family of her own, Aries finally begins to move on from her Murder Mama days. But unfinished business draws her right back to the very place she had longed to forget. This sets the pace for a fast paced novel that pulled me in from page 1. Although there was an indiscrepency in the book, it did not take away from the story that was being told. From The Cartel to Murder Mamas and everything inbetween and after, A & J are definitely showing us that their reign at the top of Urban Lit is not letting up anytime soon. 5 stars! Can't wait for "The Cartel 4"
This book was good. It's messed up what Macy did to his son , but it was either him or his son. And shit to me Casey dusty ass got what he deserves doing all that over a bitch after all them years. If he wanted to murk Macy that bad he should've done it himself . All that over money and one bitch. That I think wasn't bout shit look what she did to her own husband smh. Karmas a bitch . And now I know how um Aries husband got killed. Wished he could've live but not everybody you like in a book lives.
THIS BOOK WAS SO MUTHA FUCKIN GOOD TO ME!!!!! All my reviews - or should I say analyses - are long as fuck, but I got a LOT to say about this one.
This book was not about what you would think it was about considering what we learned about the Murder Mamas from the Cartel, and considering the title of the fucking book. But it was still so relevant. The way these two tell a story makes me jealous. I don't want to write like them or write the types of stories they write, but I do want to be able to do to readers what the Coleman's are able to do to me with every book of theirs I read.
This was one of those books where I literally didn't know who to root for. I wanted everybody to win. But Aries, Case, and Macey were all on different sides. Not all of them could win. Somebody was gonna lose. They all lost really. And when I think about it, of the three of them, Case deserved to win.
I'll start with Macey and Case's friendship. I was sad about their friendship throughout the whole book. First of all, Case's real name is Casey! Macey and Casey!!! I love that so much. I really wished they could have buried the hatchet and been friends, but apparently, there wasn't as much love as there appeared to be from the beginning. I actually hated that!!! They had been best friends since high school. I felt like there was genuine friendship between them. I felt like what Macey did with Fatima really was something that just happened due to them both being drunk. Even though I do believe a drunk mouth speaks a sober mind. But they had all been friends for so long, even before Macey and Case got into the game. So I'm rejecting the idea that their friendship started out phony. I'm just not accepting that. But, when all was said and done, too much shit had happened between them for them to ever be friends again.
I also didn't realize that Macey was in charge. I really thought they were equal. When they were at the club, Case seemed like more so the one who was in charge and he seemed like the one who was deeper in the game, especially since Macey was adamant about using the money he had stacked to go to school. He wasn't interested in making a lifetime career out of moving coke. He saw it as a stepping stone to come up financially. When the goon came into the club, even though Macey was on the dance floor and Case was chilling in their section, it seemed like the goon would have gone straight to Macey if the perception was that Case was under Macey. With him going straight to Case to tell him about the stash house being robbed, it said to me that they were either equals, or that Case was in charge. Then, Case told Macey to take the girls home and wait for him to call, and Macey did it. He asked Case if he was sure; what if he needed his trigger. Case said he was sure and he wouldn't make any major moves without Macey. And Macey did what Case said. Case didn't want Macey to dig himself any further into the game he was trying to get out of. He knew Macey wanted to go legit, and he didn't want to have him involved in a situation that could delay his move. So how weren't they real friends? And how was Macey on top?
MACEY I really liked both Case and Macey. Both of them were grimy, but Macey did way more grimy shit. I don't even understand how he became the Mayor. He was a street legend. He was a killer. I understand how he was able to evade the law, but people be knowing about skeletons in people's closet. But either way, his griminess started with Fatima. But the way that shit happened, I more so blamed her (and keep in mind, I'm not against fucking your EX's friend...emphasis on EX!!!!). They were drunk, but she shouldn't have been at his fucking house in the first place. And she was really pushing herself on him, like SHE always wanted him. Maybe it was the fact that Case cheated on her, which came out later, or that Macey had ambition outside of hood games that attracted her. Then, Macey, even though he was a fucking kingpin, got elected Mayor and really did forget how he got there...or didn't give a shit. Case bankrolled his entire campaign. He paid politicians and lobbyist and whoever else to endorse him. There was no way a nigga like Macey would have gotten elected without substantial financial backing. Case told Macey he forgot about the lil hood niggas who were in the street hustling up his campaign money. Macey said he didn't forget, he just grew up. But that shit don't make no sense. He was still on that street shit. At least 18 years after him and Fatima fucked behind Case's back, he was the Mayor and as far as wack ass Fatima (who was now his wife of 15 years) knew, her husband USED to be in the streets. But when that money came up missing from the safe, stolen by his "son", Boomer, the homeboy came and told Macey what was up and where Boomer was, and Macey had his man Edris shoot his ass. When the lil nigga was still alive, Macey finished him off. Like it was nothing. So, he wasn't that far removed from the streets. That was grimy, but even more grimy than that was that he killed Boomer. I get why he did it. Even Fatima understood in the end that Boomer was very likely going to kill Macey if Macey had not killed him. But where the fuck did the animosity come from that Boomer held toward Macey? Boomer thought that was his father. Fatima and Macey knew it was Case's son, but they literally never spoke on it. The words were never said out loud. The question was never asked. Yet, Macey treated him like that was his step son. He made the lil boy call him Macey instead of Dad. It seemed like they had a bond until Boomer started using. Maybe the same thing would have happened whether Boomer was Macey's biologically or not. But I doubt it. I do not believe Macey would have forgotten who Boomer was to him if that was biologically his son. Boomer robbed him, then called him a bitch, and Macey, sloppily, shot him in his fucking head like he was a random nigga. He regretted it. It ate him up. But his true feelings for the boy came out in that moment when he lost his sense. The next grimy thing he did was console his grieving wife for weeks as if he wasn't the one who took her son. He's a public figure and he loves his wife and knows he will lose her behind this, but still. So Macey had a fucking laundry list full of karma waiting for his ass. I still liked him for some reason.
CASE It came out that Case always had animosity and jealousy toward Macey. He felt like Macey kept him under him, and only gave him the chance to be on top once he left the game. Macey was the brains, and Case was the muscle. And Case thought they were equal, until Macey refused to introduce him to their connect. If that's true, I get WHY Case felt a way. First Fatima, then being kept in a position where he needed Macey (the connect), then being betrayed once Macey got elected, then finding out that Boomer was his son and Macey killed him. I wonder if some people will read this and feel like Case got what he deserved. I was sad when he died, but I was completely prepared for it. He got fucked over a LOT in this book. Because in addition to all the shit Macey did that led to Case wanting him dead, the bitch he hired to do the shit - who had fucked him over before - fucked him over again. Then ended up killing him. I'm sorry...if Case deserved what he got, so did every fucking body else! Really sitting and thinking about it, I think I'm mad Case died. I think the crazy lil mini coke binge he went on before he rode to the house where Macey was stashed with an AR-15 made it easier for people reading to villainize him, but his rage and desire for revenge was justified. THEN, his last words. "Please, I don't want to die." Like, I know this nigga did a lot of bullshit and took a lot of lives, including Aries' husband, who was completely innocent, but my heart broke a little bit for Case.
ARIES Aries was a bad bitch! But, she definitely shouldn't have gotten married and had a child. She had been in the game long enough and seen all her other girls get their karma. She should have known it was coming sooner or later. AND she snaked Case TWICE! Usually, the person who is putting up contract money for a killing don't pay until the job is done, and if the job is botched they don't pay. Case gave the last two Murder Mama's a million dollars up front to hold the judge's wife until he passed the verdict for his brother. They killed his 8 year old daughter, causing the judge to have a heart attack and die (I think) before the trial. Robin was arrested for the murder and later executed, and Aries took her money and ran. That was fucked up! They didn't do the job. They took that man's money. He deserved his revenge. When he finally came back, 5 years later, he wanted his money's worth. Kill Macey Seagle. She didn't do it. She let Macey get in her head. Who's to say whether Case would have killed her husband regardless of whether she completed the job or not. He killed her husband because she tried to flee AGAIN! He was still alive up until the point where Aries ran off after letting Macey escape.
FATIMA Forreal, fuck this bitch. I mean, I didn't hate her, but I didn't like her. She played two friends against each other. She manipulated her way into Macey's house, first by refusing to go home until she heard from Case, knowing Case would contact Macey first, then refusing to get dropped off after everything was straight because she didn't want to be at Case's house alone until the morning when he got back. She proposed the drinking game. She continued to blur lines that get even more blurred when liquor is involved. I'm not saying its the woman's responsibility to control herself since men have no self control. He was more wrong than she was because Case was his best friend. But I still blame her ass. She created the situation. Now, Macey fucked the shit out her...which I always approve of that! But I digress. Then after almost 20 years together, after Macey killed Boomer, she ran straight to Case. She didn't tell him he had a son until he was dead. And if she had somewhere else to go when she ran from Macey, she probably wouldn't have ever told Case. She hops the fence depending on what's going on on either side, and that shit is fucked up. She wanted Macey dead, then when she doing stupid shit and end up getting caught, she sing like a fucking canary, THEN kill herself. I didn't feel bad for her. As a mother I empathized, because I couldn't imagine that, and even though her son was a fuck up, she loved him; that was her baby. But overall, I didn't feel sorry for her and really didn't give a shit what happened to her. She started this whole shit if you ask me.
I really do wonder if Ashley and Jaquavis have studied Greek tragedy. Because the themes feel similar to me, but from a modern, ghetto perspective.
QUESTIONS I still don't understand how Macey got elected or why he wanted to be the Mayor. With everything he had done in his past, why would he want the spotlight on him. He kind of seemed like a fish out of water, kind of like Indie when he decided to bumrush his way into the board of that pharmaceutical company, only for his hood status to come to light.
I want to know exactly when Boomer came into the picture. Did she get pregnant during the time when she and Macey were still a secret? I thought Macey said that was his pussy and nobody else, including Case was going up in there. How did she end up pregnant? They never said when or what was going on. And I feel like that was important. I also want to know exactly what Macey felt toward Boomer. His thoughts were never expressed other than him knowing that Boomer was a weak wannabe thug and that his hatred would eventually lead him to kill Macey.

This is my least favorite book from A&J 😔😔 it started off really good but around the middle it seemed like they rushed it. Like they had a deadline to meet or something 😂😂 then it started going all over the place. And it’s called Murder Mamas but the whole book was about Macie and Chase 🤷🏽♀️ I don’t know this one just didn’t do it for me
I listened to this book on audio. What kind of ridiculousness is this!!! How can there be SO MANY stupid people who have so LITTLE street sense?
Case has been in the game for all these years. He sets up this kidnapping with Aries and two young, inexperienced people! Does that make sense AT ALL?? If you are kidnapping a man that you have known and worked with, completely aware of his intelligence AND he's the mayor, WHY would you NOT have seasoned people to work with Aries?? Clearly this was all going to go wrong.
Aries, Murder Mama, you supposed to be smart and you put someone in the trunk without tying up their hands? Lets just give her the benefit of the doubt because kidnapping is not her game, murder is. However, you are supposed to be strategic. It would not occur to you that Case would double-cross you??? Really??! (Rolling eyes). It didn't occur to you at all until Macy brought it up??
Fatima -- WTH! You been in the game and the Mayor's wife for HOW long? You don't know how to KEEP your mouth SHUT and ask for a lawyer?? You running to Case because what, you don't have ANY friends? No girls that's been down with you from those hood days who you can run to? Then you're confused and mad because Case doesn't want you around. What? She fell back in love overnight??
ALL the men in this book were ludicrously emotional. I could have passed OUT when I heard the sentence "Case, knowing women are emotional". WHAT! The only reason this entire book had drama was because of emotional men: Boomer, Chicago, Case, Macy. They are worse than the women. NONE of them seemed to learn self-control with age. They act as stupid is 18 year old boys.
My other issue--what is with this fascination of constantly talking about expensive things? I wonder how many editors they have for these books whose critical thinking skills are on point. It seems they may not. We understand these are people who have money, if you read a book that is not in this genre and the characters all have money, there is very little emphasis on their clothes and shoes. It is inferred that these people have money, you may hear about how big the house is, that they have servants. But it is assumed the reader is aware that everything they have is expensive. Comments like "she took off her expensive shoes, he took of his belt and let his italian pants drop", who cares? What does that add to the story? Nothing. A waste of print.
I also didn't see the point in this long flashback that Aries had of the exact same story that was in the previous book about the guy who ran away after his penis was cut off. That was completely unbelievable in that book, what was the point of putting it in this book? They could've had a quick paragraph about that, the end. No need to tell the ENTIRE story and background because, once again--WHAT did it add to this story? NO-THING.

The beginning was intense for me. I felt a great sense of sorrow. Reading the downfall of a legend is always hard. Aries is the last Murder Mama standing or at least we think 😉. Aries will always be a Murder Mama but she desires a normal life and it seems to always evade her grasp. JaQuavis is penning an update story on Aries and I can’t wait for it to drop to see did she finally catch a hold of the normal life.
Ashely be doing her thing with her books! I haven’t read a book by her that I didn’t like! My all time favorite book/series by her is The Cartel!!! Trying to figure out what’s my next read by her will be.
Don't you hate when your past just sneak right back on you? You try to move on with your life.Make an name for yourself.Have a kid or two and finally fall in love with the man of your dreams. But all that come to end when your ex-business partner want revenge. And that's when you realize that karma is a straight bitch. But you start worrying if things don't as plan.Until you start realizing that you already done this before.
Aries an young lady from L.A and she has an ugly secret. An she's part of the Murder Mamas.A crew of stone cold, roof less killers. But Aries is trying to change her life around and just live normal. Aries is ready to bury her deadly life. Her husband and son back in Barbados doesn't have an clue about her true identity and the wicked things she's done, and she's happy to keep it that way.But unfortunately somebody else had plans for Aries.
One day as Aries was doing her motherly and wife deeds in the kitchen, she start to have flash backs of her past. When she start seeing Robyn being injected with deadly poisons Aries know that was the last time seeing her partner in crime for good. But Aries had to snap out of her horrible past when her son came running down the steps.
The author's style of this book was that anyone can change their life around. Ashley and Jaquavis used lots of detail that will make you feel you was the character yourself. For example when Case had wanted to get back at Macy because Macy had left behind the thug lifestyle to become the mayor of Los Angeles,California. L
I really thought that this book was going to give some history into the Murder Mamas something of a prequel. However that wasn't the case. Introducing Macy, Case and a host of other characters into the mix caused me to be disconnected with the book, beause it really wasn't a book about the Murder Mamas! I lost interest during the reading of this one several times and when I finally made it to the end I was left confused in chapters 16,17, and 18 - it jump into a flashback without telling us the readers. The light at the end of this tunnel was that The Cartel 4 is coming!! So I am excited about that one. The only reason why I gave this book 3 stars was because I am a fan of Ashley & Jaquavis other works.
So this book isn’t really about the Murder Mama’s and I was a little disappointed about that but I still could not get enough of this book! Tons of drama but the scenes do jump around a lot which got kind of confusing towards the end.
This was an amazing story. Full of action and lots of twists. However, the only reason it got 3 stars is because I listened to the book via eaudiobook and during the time I was listening to it, I heard TWO different endings to a particular scene in the book. Explanation below: BEWARE SPOILERS!!!!!
During the scene where Case has Macy tied up, Macy tricks this young guy (I dont remember his name) into releasing him from the ropes and then kills him. However, how to boy is found dead has two parts. First, his partner finds him dead and Case is so upset that Macy got away that he kills the boy's partner but later on in the story while Aries watches. In this section Case also speaks about how he has Aries's husband kidnapped until she finishes the job. However, later in the story they jump back to this part and Aries says that she found the boy dead while coming back from being on the phone with her husband (who was not kidnapped) and later on dies in the story with a twist.
Seems like a publication error, but the book was still good.
I have about 15 minutes left in the audiobook and this book has pissed me off so bad. The book is title “Murda Mamas” but only includes the story of one Murder Mama. The story focuses more so on the beef between two men the back story of Aries. The editing of this audiobook sucks, did no one proofread this. Did they submit the draft for publication? Because at one point a character was dead and another character was present and then in the next chapter that character was alive again and the other had fled the city. The story didn’t explain if that was imagined, a flashback, or foreshadowing. I’ve noticed while reading these authors books that they forget key details that took place in their other books or details about the characters. It’s like they don’t take the time to review their work before starting a new story in the series. It’s very frustrating as a reader and makes the books less enjoyable.

You know a book's good when you listen to the audiobook and then want to re-read it physically. One of the best urban fiction I've read in a long time.Overall, the book was highly engaging and kept me entertained from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and found it to be a compelling read. Two aspects left me wanting more: firstly, I wished the author had expanded on a particular plot point that caught my interest. Secondly, some of the characters' actions at the end felt inconsistent with their personalities and development throughout the story.Content warning: This book contains a derogatory term targeting the Asian community."
This needs to be read BEFORE Cartel Queen. I’m actually not even sure how this can be “ the story of Robyn and Aries”. Robyn’s fate is decided immediately, gives a little bit about Aries . Then switches into why Case hates Macy and wants him killed then continues on about Macy and Fatima’s life for atleast 8 chapters. I had high hopes for this book but it doesn’t even compare to any of the Cartel books. This book is actually super messy plot and alll. At one point is says Macy when is should be Case. Error in writing I guess but I had to re read the paragraph to realize.

Soooo the authors made a few grammatical errors that threw me off a little bit. The authors also at one point confused Case and Macy.
But my goodness! What a story! I was able to follow pretty well. Everything unfolded so nicely. The love of money & power can make people do anything. Although the book increased my stress levels, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The title didn't match the book though.
Interesting story outline but poorly written. Author has little concept of timelines, often states the obvious Ashley Antoinette would benefit from taking some courses in the English language, grammar, etc. Author also doesn’t understand how much drug/alcohol sex abuse a body can tolerate and continue to function None of the characters are clearly good people..some are worse than others. Most deserved to die being killers and all..though 2 murderers are left standing
I’m glad I went back and read this because I was curious about what happened to Robyn and Aries. It was shocking that Robyn would call for help because she always seemed tough as nails. Aries is that friend we all need; she rides for her friends no matter what. I felt bad at Robyn’s execution not because of her, but how it affected Aries. Even though I knew from The Cartel that Tre survived, I was worried. It would be helpful to find a list of the interconnected books listed in order.

THIS BOOK IS TITLED MURDER MAMAS, YET ONLY ONE MM STORY IS TOLD IN THE BOOK. I GOT A LOT OF LOVE FOR ARIES, BUT WHERE'S THE OTHER FOUR MM'S STORIES? IF YOU'RE A REAL MURDER MAMA FAN YOU SHOULD FEEL GYPPED! RIP, BEATRICE, ANISA, ROBYN. GLAD YOUR FREE FROM BEHIND THE WALLS, MIAMOR! THIS BOOK DIDN'T DO ANY OF YOU OR YOUR MEMORIES JUSTICE! I HATE WHEN AA & JQC DO THIS: PROMOTE THE BOOK BASED ON THE TITLE YET FAIL TO TELL THE TALES OF WHAT'S PRESENTED IN THE TITLE!
Murder Mamas was excellent. Aires (Rachel) was the last one standing. After losing her husband and killing Case, she decided no more killing for her. She wanted a normal life for her and her son. Those Murder Mamas really put their game down. The Murder Mamas were last mentioned in The Cartel 4, 5 and 6.
It was such a good read!! I wished I read it in order but that was ok. It did help me understand how the girls became the Murder Mamas. I'm on book 6 of the Cartel now so read them in this book was bringing back memories. In this book they were young twins that had no idea how they fate was going to turn out.
