A supernatural romance by the creator of Ai Ore! and Sensual Phrase

Miko is a shrine maiden who has never had much success at seeing or banishing spirits. Then she meets Kagura, a sexy demon who feeds off women's feelings of passion and love. Kagura's insatiable appetite has left many girls at school brokenhearted, so Miko casts a spell to seal his powers. Surprisingly the spell works--sort of--but now Kagura is after her!

Shrine maiden Miko has sealed the powers of the sexy incubus Kagura, who has vowed to protect her. Miko finds herself suddenly popular with the boys at school and starts getting asked out. Has falling in love with Kagura made her more attractive to the opposite sex, or is some other mysterious force at work?

Okay so we get more of the same in this novel as the last one. More new characters are brought in only to try and push Miko and Kagura closer together. This time we get to see someone from Milo's past, someone who is not a demon at all; Sou. He trained under her father, to be a demon fighter. He comes back, saying that he wants to marry Miko and that her father promised. She just goes right along with it. Even letting Sou treat her like crap. She just vows to make him happy and forget about Kagura. FYI - it doesn't go well. A sealed Kagura saves her from the wedding.

Then we get to meet a snow man - well, a snow demon. He's sweet and I feel so bad for him, always living in cold, which sounds great to me but he can't even touch something without freezing it over. He ends up protecting and saving Miko and then just like with the fox... he dies. I really hope this doesn't go on in the next volume, it's so sad seeing all the good characters just die. It breaks my little black heart.

Then at the end, the father agrees to allow Miko to spend the night with Kagura... I wonder how this will turn out. Probably more of them both fighting and sexual tension that is starting to get rather silly. She needs to either give in to what she wants or just tell him to the hit the road for sure. They both need to stop playing their games and just be mature about this. Goodness.

Anyhoo, off to read the next one!

Miko is set to get married, and Kagura is jealous. But, how far will either of them go to avoid one another? Mix in a demon that brings snow in his wake, and a crazy onmyouji that was promised Miko's hand in marriage by her drunken father....and, you have a crazy adventure that anyone would love.
-----------------
My real interest in this volume came when we found out that Miko's father had promised her hand in marriage to an onmyouji named Yamabuki. Yamabuki is big on television. Miko's father made this promise in a letter that he wrote during a drunken stupor. He even misspelled "wife" as "wyfe". But, he intends to honor it.....
That is until he truly realizes Miko's feelings for Kagura. At that moment, he returns Kagura to his normal self.
---------
Another interesting point in this volume is the snow demon, Miyuki, who leaves snow everywhere he goes. He knows nothing of warmth, so he asks Miko about it. As he saves Miko from the burning house at the end, he remembers her words about warmth. It is the first--and last--time he ever experienced warmth, as he melted while saving her.
Miko's father mistakenly believes that Kagura saved Miko's life, and starts sucking up to Kagura and agreeing with anything he says. He even agrees when Kagura asks if he can take a vacation with Miko, in order to have sex with her.
----------------------
There's also a cute bonus story about a day in the life of Kagura in his shrunken "mini" size as well. It's cute, but there really isn't much to it. Even Kagura thinks it would bore people.
--------------------------------------
This volume was provided to me as an eManga by VIZ Media, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Im liking where the relationship between Miko and Kagura is going but there was a scene in the middle of the book that I though was kinda offensive and it was never really addressed. Other than that tho I did enjoy this read.

Review for volumes 1-3

It seems Mayu Shinjō and I are a poor match for I have yet to enjoy a single work by her. This was my fourth attempt - it failed and will therefore be my last. However, it does need to be said that Demon Love Spell is so much superior to all else I have read by her. In fact, it's not a bad manga at all, it's just that after almost a month of trying to get through this, it's time to admit that this is not holding my attention. That in itself doesn't mean others can't enjoy it though.

It would be a stretch to call this a particularly original plot - it's the story of Miiko who happens to be a Miko and has close to no magical talent despite being the daughter of a famous Shinto priest. By what seems to be a stroke of luck, she manages to seal the powers of a strong demon away. Kagura, the said demon, ends up living with her at the Shinto shrine and eventually a love story develops. Actually, strike that, the love story unfolds at a rapid speed which was probably one of the reasons this wasn't keeping me interested enough.

I feel as though this series has a much stronger focus on comedy than it does on the romance, which in itself isn't exactly a bad thing depending on what you are looking for. On the other hand, I wonder if I simply feel this way because the non-comedic scenes felt super rushed which prevented me from connecting to any of the characters. I guess it also doesn't help that Miiko was a tad annoying. Some might like her, but her whole wavering back and forth became boring quite fast.

What Shinjō did a lot better here than I have seen in her other works is that, while not perfect, there wasn't so much smut for the sake of smut. There was actually a coherent and reasonably logical plot going. There was even remarkably little smut compared to what Shinjō normally delivers. Her art has also improved a lot, although I still don't think it's marvellous. Some panels look great whereas faces become a pit wonky in others. Men's faces can get too long and Miiko's cheeks are weirdly bent inward.

As I have only read half of this series, I can't say for sure where it is headed. I did flip through the remaining three volumes to see whether it's worth my time but it looked like much of the same. I do think it's a readable manga and might be a good read for those who like RomComs and a dash of Shinto. I personally believe you can do much better but there's also no harm in giving this one a shot. And judging by other reviews, there are plenty of people out there who thought this was a perfectly funny series.

From this point, I'm just going to continue reading because it's a short series and I want to finish one for once, but this is so insanely frustrating that it's out of pure spite.

But Miko is nigh intolerable. I don't know how many times I went, "You are so fucking stupid," "Jesus christ, come ON," or something similar while reading this volume.

The first two chapters focus on an onmyoji who looked up to Miko's father and used to work around their shrine, and is now famous in his own right. He shows up making demands and meddling with Kagura and Miko, as is expected from this series. Miko does and says a whole lot of stupid shit. Then she cries about how much she loves Kagura when things look helpless, as is expected of this series. "Make love to me, I love you, I only want you! But I'm gonna go off with this guy instead! But how dare you look at another woman (he didn't, by the way)! Now you're back! Don't touch me even a little! Gross, I can't love a demon, I'm a priestess." skdjgjsdkgbksd

The third chapter introduces yet another actual good character and proceeds to do away with that immediately. Miko says and does even dumber shit, fawning over another good-looking guy as usual while making excuses as to why she's been clinging to Kagura for almost a year now and blaming "being a priestess" for everything. "Would I be more open about my feelings if he wasn't a demon?" No, because you're fucking stupid. She yells at him and tells him to go away, as usual, and when he does, she mopes around and cries and gets mad because he left, and then HE apologizes. Fucking hell.

Basically, any new good character who is introduced, gone forever. Every piece of shit, here to stay. Miko is an absolutely detestable main character.

Volume 3...

Starts out with a new character and a new rival for Miko's love interest! (Dun! Dun Dun!) I am not going to spoil him to much but it is pretty much the opposite of Kagura. He is pretty serious, blonde hair, despises demons, and you know, the total opposite of Kagura.

Sou Yamabuki is his name. He is in most of Volume 3 and the main "antagonist", you will see why, but he makes Miko realize some things about herself and what she really feels toward Kagura.

Then we meet up again with another sad chapter. Goody. I feel like the author just likes to torture me with happy and funny scenes then BAM! Sad scenes!

Ugh...I mean it is still good but It is depressing. I feel so sorry for the character (none of the main characters). Geez. Why author, why?

Well end to another volume. This volume stood up to my standards as well. I recommend grabbing this one!

Miko seems to be attracting no end of trouble from the demon world, though it's hard to tell how much is because of Kagura and how much is because of her own cluelessness. Miyuki was an interesting brief addition to the story as well. It's funny how the hamster (still nameless?) seems to understand emotions better than Kagura does and tries to step in between him and Miko when the two start arguing at home.

I was wondering where they'd go with this series honestly, besides all the sexual comedy, and this one was surprisingly fantastic.

Miko is forced into an arranged marriage. It doesn't last long, but it's honestly some really great plot.

An entertaining and surprisingly adorable tale of a spiritualy "blind" miko and the Incubus who falls in love with her (and her parents who are surpisingly okay with him being around, just as long as his powers are sealed and he is in his "tiny" form).

So far I’m really enjoying this series. There’s not to much going on that I have to take it super seriously. It’s a nice cutesy read. (Tho both the leads can be a bit much at times )

Also interesting when we get introduced to new characters.

The comedy is the strongest part of this series, it really is funny. The dynamics between the two leads are occasionally a bit sketchy - but the same could be said for the entire dark fantasy romance genre that this series is riffing off (and doing a really good job of being one at the same time!)

Drama

This volume was so dramatic, so much happened in a short amount of time. A rushed wedding, other demon friends arriving, people from the past making an appearance. All of the switching back and forth makes the storyline interesting.

A priestess and a master demon, who would have thought? Nah, I'm just kidding. The relationship between the two is quite something... even if it isn't real... *sigh* One can dream.

The author of "Demon Love Spell" book three is Mayu Shinjo. She is an manga artist and lives in Japan. She was with a company that was having working conditions and abusive treatment of her editor. After leaving from her company she became a freelancer herself to get away from the troubles. Then she was no longer a writer of Shoujo Mangas but as a writer of BL Mangas.
She lives somewhere in Japan because she's Japanese, and pretty much Japanese people write mangas. She wrote the manga somewhere in Japan with the other volumes of “Demon Love Spell.”
The places took place in Miko's home and her school because she met him there and most demons appear there. Then here house is a shrine in which is holy to keep demons out.
The main characters in this book is Miko and Kagura. Kagura is the strongest of all demons is sealed by a shrine maiden Miko in which is was shorten and had sealed his demon powers. But only she and he can protect each other from the other demons.
But in all beings demons might be like demons but not all are evil. Some evil maybe helping you in aid and other might be destroying you. Not everything is evil by their looks and don't judge a person by their personality or them. In this book is a girl exorcist in which her family is too.
In this volume, Miko and Kagura are going to have a hard time-relationship because Miko was engaged by a hot priest. But who knows why the man would want to marry her. Kagura was too powerful that even the man priest is weaker than Miko. The only one and reason why he wanted to marry Miko was because of her spiritual energy. The man and Kagura made a deal to fight man to man. And so that is when the man priest sealed Kagura’s demon powers which when every time she met his human form it kept on reminding him of Kagura. But on the day that she was getting married Kagura came back because the father of Miko has unbind the spell to seal his powers again. He then put up posters saying something about strong demons come and do something to me. But just then she met a demon who is a ice demon who tried to attack her. But it was all Kagura’s idea to use and protect her by gathering her spiritual powers. Basically that's it.
“I’m still nowhere near your level, Mr. Tsubaki.” That is a type of saying I am not as close as I think it is. I think that is some kind of like expression? “How would you like to get a taste of the new spell I created? It’s a thing of beauty.” I would say that this is an allusion.
“And now that you’ve invited the entire demon world to fight you, it’s hardly safe to remain with you.” The one speaking here is Miko which demons from the demon world came to Miko where Kagura had plan out a info and strong demons would come and take her. Which that is when Kagura comes in and acts to protect her while trying to use her spiritual energy. “H-he’s dazzling! How could I ever mistake him for Kagura?!” The speaker here again is Miko which it was when Kagura was being seal from his demonic powers. So she saw the human version of Kagura which has made him lost his memories and everything else. “That was something I wanted. I knew if I lost my demon powers… my strength, my abilities as an incubus and my memories of Miko.... I would become like any ordinary human being.” And now the speaker here is Kagura who is telling at Miko and the man priest’s wedding about why he had to seal his powers and become a normal human to face the weaker man priest.

You know, it's stories like these that make me want to toss out every shoujo/josei manga I own.

I dislike stories that have rape or attempted rape. I hate stories where it's treated as not s big deal. I hate even more when they make it seem "justified." >_<

Basically, this one dude is an ass hole Then, later, when she shows kindness to a stranger (what she did was stupid and probably not well-thought-out, but it's not like she was doing anything "wrong"), dude flips out. He then decides to attempt rape because he's "jealous." What's worse, she says in an internal monologue that he's "so kind" and he "loves her" and that she'll work hard to be good for him (as if all of this, including him trying to rape her, were her fault).

I realize that art imitates life and Japan has a huge problem with sexual violence and women not reporting it, but the way this manga portrays the attempted rape is that it was justified and so she shouldn't make a big deal about it, rather than portraying it as "she is really upset about this but pretends not to be because of pressure."

It's events like these that just make me want to stop reading shoujo and josei manga altogether. >_<

On the bright side, the second story was pretty good, but not enough to save my opinion of this volume. It was enough to get me to read the next volume.

My review for the whole serie:

The art of the manga is really pretty. It's a pleasure to see the banter between Miko and Kagura. And chibi-Kagura is really adorable. It has funny moments as well as actions fighting demons. I like that Kagura needs to touch girls to survive. I really like the characters and the storyline.

I find the last volume confusing though, especially the end, I find it rushed and a 7th volume would have been welcome. I was expecting a wedding with Kagura's demon family on one side, and Miko's exorcist family on the other, and I think the tension between both groups would have been funny to show. But instead after Miko and Kagura get back together, I was sure her father had put Kagura in his chibi form again. I had to reread that part a few times to realize it was not Kagura's chibi form, but Kagura's and Miko's son. It does not say if they got married after all, it also does not say if their child is a human or a demon either.
