I think Time Life did an incredible job with this series overall. This particular volume removed itself from the Civil War but covered a crucial event during this time period. The book was excellent at getting the backstory of Lincoln's presidency, the backstory of John Wilkes Booth as an actor and his family, the recruitment of his southern sympathizer co-conspirators, the assassination and the attempted assassination of Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward, the Ford Theater, the getaway, the hunt and execution of the guilty, and the national mourning.

These books are great because they are based on a specific topic or battle of the war. They are loaded with pictures and information as a whole. I would definitely recommend these as primers to anyone interested in the American Civil War. Thanks !

An excellent summation of the first successful presidential assassination. Also makes great use of images and has first rate maps to boot. The more conspiracy theory oriented slants are not investigated (namely Stanton and Benjamin) which is fine with a book of this nature.

This book has been in my home library since 1987 as part of a subscription series by Time-Life Books about the Civil War.
This book is well-written because it gives a sense of strong emotions to facts that many of us have memorized and remembered for years.
I recommend this book to all readers.
