This was a dud for me. Think I’m just not a big fan of Marv Wolfman’s writing. Wolfman writes everyone in Gotham, including Batman, with a room temperature IQ to keep this plot rolling. Additionally, Batman comes off like a massive drama queen the entire time. The art wasn’t great on this either. Super wonky anatomy going on throughout and just generally felt more dated than 1989 to me.

Not so much a "year three" story as much as a boring story set in the then-current continuity that causes Nightwing to flashback to his origins of becoming Robin*, I think in an effort to explain how Batman needs a Robin to keep him grounded and in-touch with other people, but instead just highlights what a dangerous lunatic Batman is for training a child to be a crime fighting vigilante. I mean, seriously, this kid is in his house for about 5 seconds before he takes him into the Batcave and makes him his new partner. Also, this turns out to be immediately followed by A Lonely Place of Dying, in which I swear to god Nightwing (more briefly) recaps his origins to Tim Drake.

I'm thinking I'm not a big fan of writer Marv Wolfman.

D+

*I guess like Year One, this is trying to solidify part of the Batman mythos in the post-Crisis continuity

Marv Wolfman is too experience a comics writer for this to be really bad, but having it be split between contemporary and Batman's actual 3rd year, hanging on the Robin/Nightwing of Dick Grayson and the emotional aftermath of the ridiculous and stupid Joke bludgeons Jason Todd Robin to death is awkward when you try to read it now. The story itself - Batman having to team up with mobsters to fight an even worse threat - became something of a cliche in these event stories, but at least Wolfman outs a new spin on it with it being as much/more a Dick Grayson story as it is a Bruce Wayne one, with Dick acting more like Bruce than Bruce is.

An interesting look into Batman after Jason's death, despite this being mostly a Dick Grayson story. Admittedly I skipped through a lot of the gang stuff and Tony Zucco's backstory to focus on Dick's observations of Bruce's brutality. This is one where I actually felt the tragedy. It puts an end to Dick's story with Zucco, and opens up for Tim Drake to come in and convince Bruce to consider a partner again. More likely a 4 stars with how much I skipped, but I did love the relationship

i mostly wanted to read the first appearance of tim drake but the story was nice and I'm glad to know batman wasn't so calm and okay with jason getting killed as jason himself thinks so

An amazing origin story for Dick Grayson and a timeless tale of heroism!!

This book is often overshadowed by other batman and robin origins like Dark Victory by Loeb and Sale, this book does deliver the better Dick Grayson story with amazing Bruce moments and even Alfred gets some amazing characterization in these four issues!

While not as intricate as Dark Victory, in terms of getting to the heart of who Dick Grayson is, this is a must read!! Also, it examines Bruce's psychological response to Jason's loss very well. Great, essential Batman story

The Year Three title is misleading since this has more to do with the aftermath of Death in the Family than being a prequel like Year One or Year Two, but as what it actually is, it's pretty good and does a nice job adding some depth to the death of Jason Todd and using Dick Grayson's origin as Robin as an entry point to explore Bruce's trauma works for the most part.

I really enjoyed this addition, allowing Dick and Bruce to grieve their own hurts. The aftermath of Jason's death interspliced with Dick's backstory, grief and raking up the mantle.
