Mark Finley, happily married and father of two children, is now a shark. What’s worse, he’s now smack dab in the middle of the community pool, swimmers terrified, dashing for safety. You get the picture. But he’s a nice shark, quite unique actually. Bright as an orange and steeped in Hawaiian folklore. It’s a classic case of biting off more than you can chew. Yet, somehow, Mr. Finley must find a way to break a family curse and return to human form or he’s going to become a permanent fixture at his own aquarium.
I received an eARC for free so I could read this book, and appreciate getting to share my opinions.
Finley is a really cute fantasy book with an unusual premise-an owner of a struggling aquarium goes to Hawaii to follow a legend of an orange shark…and ends up turning into said orange shark. What follows would easily suit as a plot for a movie such as “The Shaggy Dog” or “Teen Wolf”. While this isn’t going to be a life changing book for anyone, it’s a fun, enjoyable read that would appeal to middle grade readers as well as adults, particularly those who enjoy sharks. Which is basically everyone :).
In his attempt to revive the family aquarium in Beachside, Oregon, Mark Finley is obsessed with finding alani, the elusive orange shark that's rarely seen, practically an internet rumor. After being bit by alani while in Hawaii, he's turning into one unless he can figure out how to break the curse. The book is hysterical; sometimes lol-funny, but most times the humor is more subtle. The premise is over the top, but that's what makes the story work. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love this book. It is so charming. This is a real feel good read and makes me feel like I am back in Hawaii on vacation. This would make a good movie for a cross between the Hallmark Channel and Syfy Channel
