This is the 3rd story in the Cougar Series. At this point I haven’t read Kane or Lucas. While there were a few things that were alluded to from these books, one can easily read this book without being lost.

Holy Hotness Batman! Whew, I need a cold shower. Malcolm and Chey may have their issues, but when they put their minds to it the know how to have sex! And while Malcolm mentions a love for bondage, there really isn’t any of that in the book.

As I said, they have their issues. They’ve been apart for nearly 5 years, even though they are mates. They have trust issues and huge misunderstandings. At times I wanted to shake the both of them. They let their pride and anger get in the way of a relationship. Things do get cleared up by the end, but the story definitely has moments where you are really frustrated with both of them. Of course, that’s what helps make the book so good.

Okay - Malcolm gets his story. Evidently, years back, Malcolm found his mate in Cheyenne, a wolf-cougar hybrid but because of his hybrid status, he walked away and abandoned her. He turned pretty nasty after that, sexing with a lot of witches, kidnapping his brother and having a tough time shifting. Kane asks Chey to track down Malcolm and bring him back. God only knows why she agrees, but she does and things got down hill but get very sexy for her. Malcolm realizes he never should have left her and wants her back in his life, then gets angry because Chey moved on with her life and had mated with another man, then he gets lusty and sexy again because he finds out her mate is dead and she's available again, then he realizes she might be the key to shifting again, so he mates with her and uses her for his own purposes, but wants her in his life again. Then he finds out she kept a major secret from him and he's all butthurt and angry again. Chey has a tough time keeping up with his moods, but she loves him because he's her mate and all that. They spend some time on the run from a faction of cougars/hybrids who want them dead and sexing it up along the way.

I definitely enjoyed the drawn out angst as Kane and Chey negotiate their past relationship with whatever they can make of their present situation. The sexual and emotional tension between them was pretty great. I also REALLY like the fact that Chey didn't sit around celibate for 5 years waiting for the love of her life to return...oh no, she mated someone else and loved him as best she could. I applaud this decision.

But many of the same problems abound here...problems don't get resolved because the characters have to stop and have some sex. Then they forget what their problems were. The inconsistencies pop up here and there as well - I don't recall Bran being the brothers' UNCLE in the last book...mostly because Katherine, who is now Kitty, was engaged to be mated to Kane according to the last book. So apparently Kane was set to mate with his first cousin? I think the author overlooked this little detail between books. There's also absolutely NO emotional development between Kane and Chey. We're told they love each other, but I never saw any evidence of this supposed love between them. In fact, right up to the end, Malcolm continues to despise Chey's wolf side of her nature. For me, that's the equivalent of saying you love someone who is biracial, but I one of those races. That's not love IMHO. Even there at the end, after the revelation of Chey's secret child, it felt like Malcolm could have just as easily walked away from Chey again and it wouldn't have mattered to him - all he cared about was the child, he didn't give a shit for Chey.

So on top of all this, you've got Malcolm, who is pretty much just an irredeemable asshole. HE is the one who walked out of Chey's life yet he hauls out his anger and blames her for everything. He gets mad because she'd been mated to another, he gets mad that she's a hybrid, he gets mad that she hid his child from him. He blames her for all these things that were his fault to begin with. And I am totally on Chey's side for keeping that a secret - he not only told her to stay out of his life, but he told her he hated her because she was a hybrid...well, any child of theirs would also likely be a hybrid and I would not be setting up my child for that kind of relationship. Nope. Then, he uses the woman he's supposed to love to improve his own shifting problems and never really apologizes for it. He just acts like there was nothing wrong with it because doesn't she know he's an asshole? I wanted nothing good for Malcolm - I only wanted to see him suffer and this story didn't redeem him nor deliver on the suffering part. Not really.

Malcolm does nothing to redeem himself in his own book.
He apparently has a mate he abandoned 5 years ago, as she is a Hybrid shifter and wasn’t good enough for him.
In the interim he has tried to hurt his own brothers, had sex with numerous women and basically been a right basket. His sexual behaviour in these newer books is very toned down and only hinted at.
He is terrible in his treatment and verbal abuse of Cheyenne. Blowing hot and cold.
The fact they never have an honest and meaningful talk, only sex, pushes the fact these two really don’t know each other.
When Chey, the abandoned mate, is sent to bring him back, he has the nerve to throw a tantrum when he finds out she carried on with her life and mated someone else.
His behaviour gets worse when a child is then involved.
Good that the council have been outed for the out of touch idiots they are.
I own and have read and reviewed the original books in this series, both singly and in a box set, quite a few years ago. My previous reviews of this book under the original series title BLACK COUGAR from years ago are missing. I have also reread and reviewed the first few books under the SOUTHERN SHIFTERS title series.
This series has been revamped so many times it is annoying.

I am rereading the whole series through KU due to newer versions.

I read the first 3 books in this series and decided not to continue. The first 3 are about brothers finding their mates, they are easy to read and exciting. The issue is each book leaves you with a lot of questions, which sometimes get answered in the next one but often not. Like "Why are black panthers the Guardians?"

One question that was answered in this book is, "Who is the MFC father in book two?" Lara and Kanne find out they are mates in book 2. Kitty shows up and it is revealed that she has a deal to mate with Kanne. That gets called off, and we see a conversation between Kitty and her father Bran where it is revealed he is the council member that is working against the brothers.

This so far is all very good, until this book reveals Bran is not only the father of Kitty but also Lara and the Uncle to the brothers. So Kanne was to mate with his 1st cousin that was called off so he could mate with his other 1st cousin. Big ick for me.

Also, Malcolm is pretty cruel. He got all jealous because Chey mated someone else and was angry that she didn’t tell him about their daughter. I wish the author would have spent more time on redeeming him and less on Chey feeling guilty for doing what he told her to do which is"Don't let me see you again or else."

3rd Gunn brothers story. Malcolm by order of the Council was banished by his brother. That short sighted decision though technically correct, sets in motion events that endanger all the brothers and their born mates. Malcolm is selfish and when the reason for his banishment is revealed, I liked him even less. Cheyenne sent to retrieve him, really deserves better. He's pissed she's keeping secrets yet can't keep his hands off of her. She's just as attracted but knows he will never accept her much less forgive those secrets. I really wish she made him grovel but in the end he does show he's willing to protect her at all costs. At last the secrets in the Gunn family are revealed. Of course we also get lots of smexy times and action along the way between the main couple. I'm glad to see there are more books in the series focused on the other shifter communities.

Alpha knows best

I'm not sure what exactly it is but the author seems to stray from the original story sometimes. One thing will be said and then something different happens. I'm not sure if it's changed made to the story and were never corrected or what... The story was still good but was confusing to follow at times

As you see I completed book 3.

This is an ok series so far. I do not think I would buy these books but free books then they are ok.

There are bad/good guys/girls. There is danger, hurt feeling, anger, forgiveness-you get the picture.

Yes I am going to read the next in the series because I love the continuing stories of the other characters of the book.

I seriously thought it was Ben who was the traitor. I'm glad Kitty brought evidence they needed against her father and even more happy Bran got what he deserved. I wondered what secret Cheyenne was keeping from Malcolm.

So good!

Malcolm has been estranged from his bros and the clan for years. He is practically insane. When Cheyenne is sent to bring him home, his world is tipped on its axis in the best of ways. Fire is the only way to describe these two together. A really great story!

Both characters are TSTL. H is bitter, angry, can't shift, lost his mate, until she finds him. The book is him not being able to resist her, now he hates, her, now he can't live without her. He finds out she had a child, its his of course, so he hates her and will take the child from her. What a mess. It should have been good.

Review provided by Black Lagoon Reviews:

Malcolm, the third installment in Eliza Gayle's sexy Black Cougar series, is must read for anyone who loves a good mystery, hot characters and a mind numbing attraction that is only out shone by the inferno of passion between them that will leave you breathless and begging for more. This is may be my first time reading anything by this author, but just one sample and I'm utterly, irrevocably hooked!

From the first page, I was drawn in to this story. The immediate sense of action and barely restrained chemistry instantly captivated me. This helped to ease the way as we delve into the excellent world building, bringing in past histories and grievances that made this an easy read to step into regardless of whether or not you have read the previous books in the series. The settings and atmospheres are nicely captured as well encompassing anger, danger, and mystery that keeps the reader turning the pages desperate to know more. Truly the social structure of the cougars and the wolf/cougar hybrids creates an interesting landscape filled with prejudice and intrigued, the perfect atmosphere for a tantalizing tale of forbidden passion.

The characters themselves are just as wonderfully created with great personalities and a complex history between them that is hard to turn away from. The anger and hurt that these two characters carry creates an intricate framework filled with a great emotional pull that definitely kept me on my toes. You literally never knew whether these two super sexy warriors would throw a punch or fall in to bed together, or even do a little bit of both. But, what I also enjoyed was the journey that these two took that resulted in a growing bond that was intense and full filling leading Malcolm back to his roots and family, something that I would have liked to see explored a bit more as I loved the endearing relationship and group dynamic between him and his Black Cougar brothers. There was also a lot of great insight in to the thoughts of these characters exploring why they felt they had to do certain things that ended up hurting the other all of those years ago, as well as exploring the toll that those actions took on the individual. This was wonderful to see explored as it made the characters seem far more three dimensional, not to mention far less cold hearted then they may appear when words seem to fail them, which tended to be often

The mystery and action of the story definitely added to the tense relationship between Malcolm and Chey as well propelling this story at a break neck speed. The writing style added to this encompassing a flow that managed to give both insight and an unending source of entertainment and passion. The mix was definitely something that I enjoyed, keeping me locked to my chair, reading fervently just to see what would happen next.

My only complaint though was the ending of the story. Well, even that isn't quite right. More like the culmination of the mystery when the 'villian' is unmasked, his nefarious plot brought to light. It just felt a bit rushed, the insanity and sense of injustice that the antagonist felt falling flat against the well developed characterization and drive of the other characters. Over all, if came off as a bit anticlimactic despite some great action that reinforced the bond between the cougars and Chey, as well as being a catalyst to reveal one last twist that I really loved. In the end however, this wasn't enough to sour the experience of the novella as a whole because first and foremost this is definitely an erotic paranormal romance with a mystery thrown in to keep the story moving.

In the end, I would highly recommend this to any fan of paranormal romance who doesn't mind some hot bed play between two aggressive, sexy warriors. And if you haven't read a story by Eliza Gayle before, then you are definitely missing out!

Primal urge isn’t an easy thing. It’s even harder for Malcolm Gunn. A black cougar that had to leave his family and clan behind him. Malcolm is getting used to his new, calm and quiet life. But nothing in his life can remain quiet for long. Especially when his bond mate, a hybrid shifter that he turned his back on, comes back into his life

When Malcolm comes face to face with the woman that Mother Nature intended for him to have, his life begins to spin out of control. His attraction to Cheyenne is overwhelming. He tries his best to deny it. His certain she has, after the way he left her four years prior

After their steamy re-acquaintance, Cheyenne explains to Malcolm why she is there. She’s been hired by his brother, Kane, to bring him back to the clan. Malcolm knows this is what Cheyenne and her ‘kind’ do. They’re hired ‘guns’ sent to do the will of those who seek their service. He knows not of her hybrid status, only that she is a half-breed cougar. It’s one of the reasons they couldn’t be together before. The laws of the cougar council forbid mixing.

Cheyenne goes on to tell Malcolm that his brother insists he return to the clan. Something is amiss and he needs his help.

Returning to the clan’s land and to his brother is the last thing Malcolm wants to do. He orders Cheyenne to leave. Another steamy confrontation sends both their desires near the edge of insanity. To be this close to a bond mate and not give into the desire is maddening. Malcolm uses this to his advantage and is able to remove Cheyenne from his home. But the hybrid cougar has no plans on walking away from a job she was hired to do. She always gets her man and there is no way she is letting Malcolm gain the upper hand.

Cheyenne leaves the cabin in the woods where she found Malcolm and heads for town. She decides to wait and return for Malcolm later. She goes to a local Waffle House to bide time. While there, she senses another shifter in her presence. When she finds him, she confronts him. He introduces himself as Carl and claims Kane hired him as well, to make sure Cheyenne does her job correctly.

This ignites rage inside of Cheyenne. No one questions her ability to get a job done. She is about to leave the premises when Carl stops her by grabbing her arm. Before she can react to his advance on her, she hears the growl of her mate. Malcolm is there and is angered at the sight of another man’s hands on his woman.

His confrontation with Carl is brief. He and Cheyenne go back to his house. After much argument and protest from her end, they end up sharing a passionate moment. But the ecstasy the revel in is short lived when Cheyenne reveals a secret to Malcolm, one that has him ready to kill.

When he thinks things can’t get any worse, it does. Carl shows up at Malcolm’s doorstep. Dead. This discovery leads to a series of events that neither of them can escape.

Through suspicion, betrayal, and passion neither can deny, Malcolm and Cheyenne have to learn to trust each other, forget the past, and overcome secrets to find out who is murdering the people they know.

Life is never easy and love is impossible. Will Malcolm and Cheyenee find a way to get the answers they seek and fulfill the desires of their heart, the desires that Mother Nature intended?

This book in the third in the Black Cougar Novels. It is preceded by Lucas and Kane. I highly recommend this book to those who love paranormal erotic romance with shape shifters. You won’t be disappointed.

Losing the ability to shift into this cougar form is driving Malcolm Gunn to the painful edge of sanity. He has already committed acts against his clan and family in order to find the solution to his problem but the answer just may lie with the woman he rejected years ago. Cheyenne has been hired to bring Malcolm back home. This is a mission and nothing more. At least that's what she keeps telling herself. The moment she's in Malcolm's presence, painful memories and intense lust consume Chey and Malcolm doesn't intend to let her get away. Secrets, lies, anger and a deadly jealousy threaten not only Chey and Malcolm but also those they love most.

Malcolm and Chey's story starts 5 years ago when the were-cougar Guardian came across the hybrid. Chey is part wolf and therefor is looked down upon by the full blooded cougars. Yet Malcolm was drawn to her because of their mate bond but quickly shunned her with harsh, hateful words. After being exiled by his clan for involvement in dark magic, Malcolm is asked to come back by his brother when it becomes clear someone is out to remove all Gunn brothers. Chey is sent to retrieve Malcolm at any cost but her mission becomes more challenging when strong emotions from both of them immediately come to a head.

I had a difficult time deciding on if I actually liked this pairing. I felt Malcolm was wrong in every way in what he did to Chey. He attempts to blame responsibility to his clan and family as the reason why he pushed her away after finding out they're mates. Yet both of this brothers claimed their mates not too long after finding them, not caring of the consequences. He has a habit of using her sexually then saying hateful things after to drive her away. He even gets angry when he finds out she's been with another, when he was the one to reject her in the first place. Chey is no wilting flower. She's strong in many ways and can hold her own against Malcolm. I didn't hate these two ending up together or even Malcolm, I just thought she forgave him too easily. While the sexual chemistry these two have is undeniable and should satisfy any smutty appetite, they were my least favorite couple in this series.

In Malcolm, the build up to the who and why someone is after the Gunn brothers is finally revealed. The suspense and action that takes place during the book had me not wanting to put the book down. The one complaint I have regarding the finale was for all the build up leading the the big finale, it felt a bit rushed and anticlimactic.

Malcolm wasn't perfect but still a good read. Chey ended up being one of the highlights of this book because she kept surprising me with each secret she revealed. It really kept me on my toes. Malcolm was a nice mix of dramatic moments along with a steady supply of action and intense sex. Eliza Gayle's Black Cougar series has many very well written, multilayered characters that kept me coming back for more. Yes, that includes Malcolm even though I had my issues with him regarding his relationship with Chey. This series is for those who like their paranormal romance dark, their men to be alphas and the sex to be off the charts hot.

SENSATIONAL

Malcolm Gunn is no stranger to trouble he has been both on the end of it and causing it for several years now. Ever since Malcolm's sexual encounter with a another shifter on his land several years ago he has fought his inner demons and everyone around him. He has long been considered an outcast and his shifter clan has indefinitely banished him from their land.

Cheyenne Ross was a hybrid half breed and was shunned and rejected by most clans only being called forth to do their dirty work. When Chey gets a call from Kane Gunn requesting her services she knows she needs to help him get to the bottom of what is happening with the clans. Kane's mission for her is to bring home his brother Malcolm. Chey knows she must help Kane but Malcolm can she truly complete this mission and bring home the man who took her innocence and broke her heart . The man whose parting words to here were 'I would never mate with a half breed'.

When Chey finds Malcolm everything changes he is not the person she thought she would find and the passion between them burns stronger than ever. There is also other dangers lurking someone is trying to eliminate the Gunn brothers and now they have found their way to Malcolm's door . Betrayal and murder has found both Chey and Malcolm and it will take them to work together and trust each other if they are to survive. Malcolm knows letting Chey go was the biggest mistake of his life but will she let go of the past and accept him for who he is and will Malcolm still want Chey as his mate if they survive everything once he learns first of her betrayal and then the secret she has kept from him for five years.

Malcolm is book 3 in the Black Cougar series and all I can say is WOW this series is definitely one of my favourites and I can't recommend it highly enough. If you are truly looking for a series that has it all this is a series for you.

Books in the Black Cougar series are

(This review was originally written for Nocturne Romance Reads) - 3 1/2

This third installment of the Black Cougar series by Eliza Gayle certainly started off explosive and just kept going from there! Emotion, both good and bad, passion, and action are just a few of the attributes that shaped this story and will keep readers enthralled from start to finish!

Both Malcolm and Cheyenne were destined to be mates, but five long years ago because of some emotional differences as well as other circumstances both decided live their own lives apart from one another. Now, the two are together again both trying to deny the attraction and the passion that never really faded between them. In the midst of their personal struggle with one another, someone is out to frame both Chey and Malcolm for murder. If they don't come together and work as the team they were meant to be, they risk the chance of losing one another permanently along with everything else they hold dear in the process.

Malcolm packed an erotic punch that will leave readers breathless! The interaction between Malcolm and Chey was explosively sensual and both had great chemistry together when they could get past their misconceptions and misunderstandings of one another. Although parts of this book could leave the readers frustrated, these parts also engage the readers in the story more and make the characters and their situations seem more realistic. Fans of Eliza Gayle's Black Cougar series will enjoy Malcolm for the raw, erotic tale it is, and fans of Paranormal Erotica will also enjoy this book but are encouraged to read the first two books in this series before reading Malcolm.

Wow! I never thought cougar shifters could be so sexy!

I liked this book. This is the 3rd book in Eliza Gayle’s Black Cougar series. Now, I will say that this is the first book I have read in the series. I was able to jump into the story and not feel like I was missing to many details. The first two books focus on Malcolm’s brothers Kane and Lucas. We do meet them here, very briefly, in this story.

The story takes off from the first chapter; I love how Ms. Gayle just hits the ground running with this adventure. We meet Malcolm, a black cougar and Chey, a hybrid cougar/wolf. Their chemistry is off the charts. This couple is forced to deal with their emotions including strong unresolved feelings towards each other and their inner most fears as they race to figure out who is trying to destroy them.
I enjoyed the fast pace of this story. Malcolm and Chey are both strong characters and I enjoyed seeing them struggle between their human and animal sides as they worked together. These strong personalities also bring out some steamy, smoking hot romance, holy hotness.

Final thoughts: I would recommend this book to anyone who likes paranormal romance and shifters. The characters were solid and well developed. The story flowed smoothly . Once I started Malcolm, I could not stop reading it till I found out the ending. I am definitely going to read more of Eliza Gayle!

Malcolm is the eldest Gunn brother and was banished from the clan five years ago. He went rogue after discovering his true mate and could not accept that she was a hybrid. Mating hybrids was against clan rules, he had no choice he had to turn his back on her and what could have been.

Chey has been given a mission by Kane Gunn to bring in his brother, there needs to be something done about the clan and the brother's need to support each other. Chey has to put her own feelings to one side, but knows, accepting this mission is going to test her will and she is going to have to do her best to not fall in love with the one who broke her heart five years ago.

This book has lots of action, passion, emotions and turmoil. Once the truth is finally unveiled will those involved be able to accept the facts and overcome heartache to be happy? This is a great read and continues the sexy eroticism that the Gunn brothers bring to each book. Is this the last book in the series? Eliza Gayle has possibly left a small opening to come back to the Gunn brothers and their clan in the future, I hope she does.

Wow, I loved this book! Malcolm is book 3 in the Black Cougar series and while I enjoyed books 1 & 2 (Lucas & Kane, his brothers), this story knocked my socks off! We first meet Malcolm in book 1 and he is bitter and cruel. In his book, we see not only the reason for that, but learn that he is hot, loving, intriguing, and so sexy!

Malcolm is reconnected with his (unclaimed) mate Cheyenne, a tracker, who is sent to bring him back home to his brother Kane and the clan lands. While Malcolm and Chey battle through their past personal issues, they realize their attraction is still undeniable and so intense they must give in to it. And boy of boy, do the sparks fly!

Ms. Gayle writes sex/love scenes that will blow your socks off! Hot, hotter, and scorching hot!! As you fan yourself through these wonderful scenes, this book also delivers a delicious mystery to solve of who committed a murder and is trying to frame Malcolm and Chey up for it; and many past lies to unravel.

This was a most enjoyable read and is highly recommended!

I loved the story, though again there were many unanswered questions left hanging at the end. Also, the editing was not the best for this book. I read it as part of the Eliza Gayle Shifter Bundle, so I'm not sure if the individual book was edited better or not. The Guardians in this series make for an interesting read, if you can get past the editing issues. I would recommend this series to any fan of shifter books. I will say that though the next three books are considered part of the same series, Ms Gayle even mentions in one of the author's notes that the Guardian books were originally a trilogy and then she added the other three (and hopefully more after Shiftin' Dirty) later to extend the series. The other three, though taking place in the same general area, are quite different than these first three. Almost like the second set were a spin off rather than part of the original.

This is the third book in this paranormal series by Eliza Gayle. And it's a very erotic and emotional story, you can read it as a stand alone. But irecommend that you read them in order,so you can understand more about Malcolm. This book was written at a great pace. It was a great page turner that flowed beautifully. It had a great balance of action, relationship development and romance.

Malcolm is the perfect blend of sex and emotion with characters that attach themselves to your heart.Every detail so well written, readers go through each emotion alongside them.I read the book in one night, because i had trouble setting it down.
