Appropriate Title For A Great Mystery

I enjoyed reading this intricately plotted mystery by a new-to-me author, who is certainly not new to writing mysteries. Carol Davis Luce imparts a nuanced view of a small, desert town situated in a high desert in Nevada. The characters are well-written for small town residents, who could easily have been cliches. I liked the spirited female protagonist who returns from out-of-town; a seemingly fragile 11 year-old boy who is still a size 8, and of course, there is a handsome male protagonist who happens to have a smart rescue “dog.”

The many twists and turns in the plot kept me reading and trying to suss out the murderer from many possible culprits. After all, not only was a refined beauty murdered, so were several other townspeople in the past and in present-time.

4 stars. This book needed an editor or someone to re-format for Kindle. Except for chapter breaks, there were no breaks to separate POV changes and/or scene changes. This problem became annoying during the lead up to the denouement when there were more POV and scene changes.

From the very first sentence, the story grabbed hold of me and did not let go. I had a very hard time putting the book down. Thankfully the Text-to-Speech option was enabled for the Kindle edition, and so I had my Kindle "read" to me while I drove to and from work. The characters were so beautifully drawn, I felt like they were real people about whom I cared deeply. I also thought the plot was exceedingly well laid out, and the motivations of the characters were believable. The writing itself was terrific -- artful enough to be pretty, but without drawing attention to itself. This author is in command of the art, and this book is well-worth the read.

As for the overall book storyline, it was okay, and I kept reading to see how long it would take the protagonists to figure out who was doing the killing. Roni Mayfield wasn't much of an investigative reporter. With as much experience as the author indicated she had, you would have thought she would have come in demanding the sheriff open an investigation. Everything had to fall into her lap before she finally did something. The crush on the geologist was a little too pat. And, way too many people died, for such a small town, before anyone took a real interest in what was happening. However, the book allowed me to pass the time with a big "are you for real" smile on my face.

Before I woke up this morning, I got to thinking about the improbabilities involved in this book. First of all, how could Roni remain such close friends with Caroline, when she barely saw her at all. Why was it that no one knew the identity of Caroline's illegitimate son Aaron? Wasn't it handy to have all the passages under the houses in the mining town? And, to have a wealthy resident who owned a plane which James and Roni could borrow. How much longer did Roni have to be away from her job? Parts were enjoyable, but--good heavens--Roni had three accidents in less than a week.

I picked this up when I saw that it took place in north eastern Nevada a section of the country I am familiar with. I wasn't expecting much but in the end I kinda liked it. Kinda like "To Kill a Mockingbird" only in the desert without any racial overtones, but with a kinda small town, nice characters, tomboy girl, but something a little spooky is going on around here ..kinda thing.

This is the first story I read by Carol and it hooked me for life! I originally bought this book because I liked the cover and the blurb on the back sounded interesting. I was quite surprised at how good it was. From that point on, I searched high and low for her books and now have the complete set. The story gives the reader a good feel for what Nevada is really like when you get away from Las Vegas, especially with the many mining towns that are scattered throughout the state. Great characters, high suspense, and a plot that kept me guessing right until the end. This book is now out in electronic form and is well worth it if you cannot get the paperback. Highly recommended.
