Sawako and Kazehaya are now dating! Sawako's worried that she hasn't told her parents about it, though. Will her father freak ou that his little girl has a boyfriend?

Though Kimi ni Todoke is only her second series following many one-shot stories, it has already racked up accolades from various "Best Manga of the Year" lists. Winner of the 2008 Kodansha Manga Award for the shojo category, Kimi ni Todoke also placed fifth in the first-ever Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) contest in 2008.
Summer term begins. So we are a roughly one school year into this story, I think.
Sawako manages to boldly CALL A BOY (the one she is dating, yes, but it is still scary, plus she is iffy on social etiquette) and even tries to hold his hand! So brave! And she talks about stuff with her two girls and finds out how the became pals.
Kazehaya meets Sawako's parents! It is stressful for everyone but they all do their best and things work out happily. At least Sawako is dating a nice, polite boy, otherwise her dad would probably have a heart attack.
As always, everything is done perfectly, even though it may be insignificant. And there are the usual adorable chibi figures on the corners.
Apparently there is a live action version as well as an anime.
Agh, the hand-holding debacle. Sawako and Kazehaya are so embarrassed and flustered about even holding hands. (I can't say it's not true to life, though, since I imagine most people have gone through similar embarrassment the first time they held a crush's/boyfriend's/girlfriend's hand.) Given how many pages Shiina devotes to the hand-holding debacle (over twenty across two chapters), it'll be interesting to see how the page pacing goes when these two actually manage to kiss each other...
I wish Sawako had been brave enough to tell her parents on her own that she was dating Kazehaya (then she would have spared both him and herself the awkward revelation and introduction occurring at the same time). Sawako's mother takes it surprisingly well (I think most mothers would have been a tad angry/touchy that their daughters hadn't shared such a thing; Sawako must get her easy-going spirit from her mother), but Sawako's dad...well, he's very much a traditional father, the kind who views the boyfriend as a "rival" of sorts. Anyway, the resulting "parent meeting" is very sweet, a little sad (if you look at it from Sawako's father's viewpoint), but it's good progress for the Sawako/Kazehaya relationship.
Kazehaya's thought at the end of the parent meeting chapter ("I'm gonna date her seriously. Yes, I am...") is one of those quiet resolutions that ends up reverberating into following chapters and developments. His commitment to her and himself gets to the point that he's putting her on a pedestal, one where he can't potentially hurt or break her, and neither of them honestly want that kind of distance separating them. A relationship means that you risk making mistakes and having arguments. If Kazehaya and Sawako don't "get" that soon, then they may just head down the road of breaking up.
Favorite dialogue from this volume:
Ayane: What a shame, though. If we were a boy and a girl, we would fall in love. Chizu: We would. [-Chapter 49]
Am I strange for loving friends that can say such things to each other without either one being "weirded out"? It's just a nice kind of revelation between friends: "Oh, if things had been different, then maybe we would have been perfect for each other."
Again, I read far too much into Kimi ni Todoke (and manga in general, really), but that just goes to show how seriously I take it as a story, shoujo manga or not. I highly recommend it to people who are looking for a shoujo manga they can love and cherish (and maybe even analyze).
Dad is still very annoying and I'm still very much liking the friendship dynamics.
Also Miss Yano again with the "I wonder if we'd be dating if we were a boy and girl." Like hello?? PLEASE give Yano a girlfriend (I know it won't happen, but come on!!!!)
GAH, another fun-filled volume and I am just bursting!!
There is a first time for everything and I can genuinely say this volume made me blush.
And there isn't even anything "inappropriate" in this series!!! THEY JUST ARE SO ADORABLE!
Honestly, it is hard not to feel ALL the things along Sawako and Kazehaya. They have such a beautiful relationship and I'm so happy for them both!
I also laughed a bunch in this volume! Poor Sawako's dad!! I had to laugh at his expressions and his thoughts. He's such a great dad! <3 And once again, well done Karuho Shiina! She captured all the nervousness and awkwardness with who were dating meeting our parents. SO good!
I loved that last chapter! It was fun and really enjoyed getting some backstory.
It was a little slow, but it helped the character development, so I’m not complaining too much.
The last chapter feels like it either should have been in a new volume or had something added on. It got cut off at an okay spot but I wanted to read more and to get it over with. It was a bit tedious.
4/5 I really enjoyed this volume. Though there really was very little dialog. We open with like 6 pages of art depicting hand holding. It was a little much. After that though we get to see Shota meet Sawako's parents and while Dad is still obnoxious and awkward it was sweet.
The last chapter was how Chizuru and Yano became friends which was also cute and fun.
Sawako and her parents on the cover this time around and honestly I love it. But maybe that's just because I'm a dad....
finally, after 30plus episodes this ship #SawakoAndShota has finally sailed 💓 this series made me so nostalgic of the many facets of my highschool life, it also made me appreciate my friendships more💕 kaja! iloveit! will watch the live action movie soon!
Series Review: What I like about the series the most is that while some things about the story seem a bit hard to believe (mostly Sawako's social awkwardness and utter lack of perception), is that once you accepted things proceed in a very realistic fashion. One of the things I love the most is that the story does not dive head first into a romance plot, but lets the main character come to terms with finding her place in the classroom and with her new-found friends first. Most appreciated is that most of the time the characters actually talk to each other when it comes to misunderstandings instead of just letting them stew until they absolutely have to be dealt with. A huge plus is that the humour of the series actually makes me smile, even laugh at times and that it deals with growing up and deciding on what to do with your future in a realistic way. What grates on my nerves quite a bit are the ever-present gender stereotypes that come up time and time again, especially when the plot finally moves towards a romance plot for not only Sawako, but her two best friends as well. (Especially the handling of Ayane and Chizu's romance is not quite to my liking. But well maybe I just wish that Ayane was gay and Chizu could have stayed a tomboy not interested in romance for a bit longer ;D) And what I love about the series the most is the deep friendship of three rather different girls that mean the world to each other!
Overall I'd give the series 3,5 to 4 stars (some individual volumes are better some are more average). Usually this type of slice-of-life, romance is not my cup of tea, but Kimi ni todoke manages to be charming, realistic and quite funny :)
This manga series continues to be really cute and sweet. This volume is a massive step for Kuronuma and Kazehaya's relationship. Not only do they hold hands, but Kazehaya meets Kuronuma's family which is a massive step seeing as they have JUST started to go out. But this volume was filled with such sweet moments. The hand holding scene made me want to jump with joy (you also know that this is a shojo manga when the characters ONLY hold hands at volume 12 haha), and I really liked seeing the awkward dynamic between Kuronuma and Kazehaya now that they are a romantic couple. They don't really know how to act and I think it is a realistic interpretation when friends become lovers.
I also really loved seeing now Chizu and Yano became friends. The series is really starting to develop the secondary characters and I can't wait for the focus to shift towards these characters more!
Overall I loved reading this volume (even though it did put me in a bit of a reading slump because I had read so many books from the same series). I think I will take a break from this series though for now. In the future I'll come back to it and love it again with a massive passion!
I really like Sawako's parents a lot! This was another cute, sweet volume. But I'm sad the story is just sort of coasting at this point. It's just about what they're up to each day. Nothing really exciting or jaw dropping is happening. So I'm a bit bummed about that. But, I am still enjoying the story and the great characters. I just wish something big would happen.
But for now, here are two very fun and cute chapter title pages!
Technically speaking, this is cute, but you'll forgive me if I feel like taking a star off when so much of the plot revolves around hand-holding. I mean, seriously? I mean, I'm not a PDA person myself, but hand-holding is honestly one of the most harmless, non-explicit forms of physical affection there is!
(Well, unless you count THIS , that is, but I don't think most people do. I mean, it takes context, but...yeah, anyway.)
That aside, the meeting of Kazehaya and Sawako's parents goes over just as you'd expect: the dad's especially protective of her, but there's really nothing to fight with regarding Kazehaya. He's a great guy, kind and well-mannered, and there's nothing for any doting dad to complain about.
All in all, an okay volume, but nothing really crucial happens here, I don't think. Nice and calming, NEXT!
Sawako's father meeting Kazehaya was so funny! He is so jealous of his beloved daughter. Awww the first love is so sweet.... Sawako having troubles holding her boyfriend's hand, or inviting him to her bedroom... It is so cuteeee! Being nervous and happy next to your boyfriend... She even loses some of her shyness when she dared to take his hand!
So every struggle Sawako has when it comes to be a girlfriend is so funny and innocent. I love this manga!
Wow, Loved this volume and been really enjoying this manga series, omg Sawako and Kazehaya moments too! : ) Definitely recommend this series & the anime if you love shoujo/romance type series : )
