It’s been many years since I read this collection, and for the first fourth of the book, I was surprised I wasn’t enjoying it more since it’s a book that absolutely floored me in my twenties; I think, though, that I just didn’t connect with the poems about motherhood. As I continued, though, the poems became spicier and more transgressive, and I was like ah, yes, here is the poet that made me seriously consider moving to Vegas for the UNLV MFA. Barnstone writes spectacularly about betrayal and trying to continue with life when the person you love most has wronged you. She blows the country music cheating heart songs out of the water and does it gorgeously. That’s definitely not all she writes about, but that section of poems really shines.
