That was the day she was raped. Nine months later, she gave up the daughter she'd conceived on that terrible day. I was asked to read for an honest review.

I wasn't at all sure I would enjoy this when it began, however I did. Thus the three stars.
Too short for me I'm normally a reader of large books. I think though this sad tale needed the shortness, the temptation to enalrge it would have been a mistake.

Because of its length it was difficult to really get inside the characters but Tonya managed this well. all three generations facing their own demons came over very well.

There was an awfull truth about the story including its ending, any other ending, I believe, would have spoilt the whole. Tonya resisted the temptation well and her writing is sparse and controlled enough to convey a whole terrible tale of consequences.

This is not to say the book is gloom and doom, all through it runs the thread of love, maternal love and family love, which can help to repair and redeem.

The subject matter is one which needs the truthful attention she brings to it. Also the ways that what might be considered the right, ethical decision may turn out to be the wrong one. Life is for ever complicated, Tonya is not afraid to voice this.

This is truly a heart breaking short story. I could feel the emotions that Anne felt as a child and when she seen her birth daughter which she gave up because she had been attacked violently at a young age. Be prepared to shed tears reading this story.
