The Inferno Club: In public, this scandalous society of London aristocrats is notorious for pursuing all manner of debauchery. But in private, they are warriors who would do anything to protect king and country . . .
They say that the very name of Warrington is cursed . . .
From a time as old as the cold stone of the duke's ancestral castle, the Warrington men have been plagued by tragedy. But Rohan Kilburn, the Duke of Warrington, has vowed to escape the predestined torment by forsaking love and devoting his life to the Inferno Club and its secret mission.
And then she is brought to him unbidden by cutthroats hoping to calm the duke's infamous temper—a sacrificial virgin of sorts. But even overpowered, Kate Madsen will be no man's sacrifice. And the duke's price for claiming her may be what he has sworn never to give—the heart he has so long and fiercely guarded—to the beautiful hostage he was never meant to love.

The first half is good … and then it goes Dangerously Downhill!
This is the second book in Foley's "Inferno Club" series and follows My Wicked Marquess, which came out June of last year. Neither one garnered a high rating from me, let alone reread status, and they both proved that Gaelen Foley is definitely one of those "hit or miss" authors for me. My Dangerous Duke was a miss, but it did not start out that way!
SUMMARY [Cornwall, London, and the Orkney islands off the coast of Scotland - 1816:] When Kate Madsen (22) is first introduced to "the Beast," aka Rohan Kilburn, the Duke of Warrington (34), it's after having been kidnapped, imprisoned for five weeks in a cellar, drugged with laudanum, and made up - and dressed down - to look like a prostitute. She's a "gift" for the Duke of Warrington, whose smuggler tenants are trying to appease him, as well as get him involved and implicated in a bigger mess than he realizes. He is instantly aroused by the woman and is glad to gain some recompense for having to take time off from his busy spy-assassin-sleeping-around lifestyle, go to one of his least favorite properties, and deal with some villagers' illegal activities. Rohan shortly discovers that Kate is not whom - or rather what - he thought she was, however he is nonetheless intrigued and attracted.
Kate has been through a very trying few weeks and this is only compounded by the fact that she's about to be handed over to a man nicknamed "the Beast" so that she can for all intent and purposes be his sex slave. Although they got off to a rocky start, Kate warily begins to trust this man who leaves her alone that night because she passes out, saves her when she's about to fall off a cliff, and becomes becomes outraged upon discovering that she was kidnapped and forced into this prostitute-charade (and that's all within the first 24 hours of meeting him!). The attraction between them is palpable, yet they spend a week ignoring it and settling into an uneasy truce and friendship, while they try and untangle why she was kidnapped and who is behind it.
Rohan's family has long been part of the Order of St. Michael the Archangel, "the good guys" on earth who are fighting against "the most evil bad guys imaginable," the Prometheans. After Kate is lucid enough to tell him she was brought there against her will, he is determined to find out who was behind this plot and why. It quickly becomes apparent that this is not some random kidnapping, but is directly connected to the overall Order vs. Prometheans battle. Untangling this mess will take them from Rohan's haunted castle in Cornwall, to the crowded and partying city of London, to a treasure-hunt and series of Indiana-Jones-type-tests in the Orkney islands. Through all this, people thought dead will reappear, allegiances will be questioned, love and trust will be tested, and ultimately Kate will have to decide if she is strong enough to love this dark and tortured man, and Rohan will have to decide if he is strong enough to let her - and love her in return. (I don't know where these corny last liners come from, but I can't seem to help myself!)
REACTION As I said before, the book started off strong. I knew from the series' first book that the whole Order vs. Prometheans theme is complex, convoluted, and stretches across the series, however that didn't really bother me until the second half of the book, when things started to go downhill in other areas.
We begin with a sheltered, bookish, lonely, young woman who is lost, completely alone in the world, doesn't know who to trust, is understandably wary, yet is also kind and surprisingly brave. She's been living alone in her little isolated cottage with just her books and herself for company, ever since her guardian died 18 months ago. Her mother died when she was only 5 and her father, whom she was separated from at that time, died five years after that. She longs for adventure and to go out and experience the world, but feels safer within her familiar and comfortable cottage.
Her co-star is an all-around bad-boy assassin who has spent years sleeping around like no other. Yes, the Order guys are supposed to nurture their "bad-boy" reputations, but Rohan seems to do so all too willingly and we are told in the first few pages that he is used to having a "daily dose of sex." He is a very lonely man - both due to the nature of his work and because he has no living family members. Although he knows that what he does is necessary, he feels profound guilt for the many lives he has taken and the families that are left behind.
Great, right? Very dark-tortured-hero meets bookish-shy-sweet-heroine and love-will-conquer-all-in-the-end. It very much reminded me of Foley's Lord of Fire, the second book in her Knight Miscellany and a wonderful read.
So yes, it's all great ... right up until the point where they sleep together. No joke! The book was going great - I enjoyed the interactions and their relationship was progressing at a realistic and reasonable pace. There are cute, funny, tender, and hot moments, and you're looking forward to even more. The lead-up to them making love - and then the actual "making" part (lol) - was well-written and great and I was totally with it ... but they sleep together and the next morning, the book begins a rapid free fall.
SPECIFIC CRITICISMS Kate, whom we *thought* we knew, apparently decides to go into personality-shifting overload, because the morning after giving up her virginity, she very easily makes the switch into a lovey-dovey seductive mistress who is very forthright about her sexuality and her lust for the hero. Now I'm not against that type of heroine, but that is NOT who Kate is ... well, it's not who she was, but apparently one night with the Duke will *truly* be a life-changing - or at least personality-altering - experience. I also became sick of hearing about the enormity of Rohan's sexual appetite, as well as how well-endowed he is - I mean we get it already, he's abnormally "notoriously" (that word is used), big. Enough!
My second problem arose with her sudden insight into Rohan as a dark, lonely, and love-starved man who just needs her devotion and pure love to heal. This last was an epiphany/revelation that comes to her within the space of a few hours, after having had to confront a horde of Rohan's female admirers who are practically beating down his door (can you say excessive?). All of a sudden, Kate understands everything: Rohan is scared of love, he's just been using all women and letting them use him, he doesn't think anyone is capable of loving the real man underneath or that he deserves it, and he's convinced himself that the Kilburn curse exists all in an attempt to cover up his running away from love. Wow, that's some great work there Dr. Kate - you don't even need a psych degree!
There are also a series of revelations and realities she has to confront, all of which she just accepts, takes in stride, and moves on. I mean, there's having forbearance and then there's just being stupid and devoid of emotion. I'm sorry, but it all of these things piled up and really began to grate on my nerves (I know, you couldn't tell ;-); after a few chapters all I wanted was to hurry to the end, get it over with, write my review, and move on to the next book in my to-read pile.
My **BIGGEST** criticism by far, however, was about three *very* questionable moments. It is a huge issue for me - as it should be for everyone - when books in this genre romanticize rape. There was nothing so blatant here (not like in Dodd's recent In Bed With the Duke), but there were definite problem areas and I've had this with Foley books before (specifically the first Knight book, The Duke): * EXHIBIT A * Kate shows up the first night, is brought to the great hall where she is offered/given to Rohan, she's been drugged and thinks he's about to rape her ... yet she is attracted to and aroused by him and thinks it might not be all that bad. Excuse me, what?! * EXHIBIT B * "If he had to have his way with her before he would let her go home, at least she knew that, if nothing else, he would make sure she enjoyed it. She shivered at the scandalous thought, ..." Scandalous?! Try completely unhealthy and twisted. * EXHIBIT C * "She sensed his desperation and knew that he was hard and wild enough to take it if it was not offered freely" (p.318) ... great, what a nicely poetic way of alluding to rape.
BOTTOM LINE Skip it! Stay away! Or somehow lose the book after page 218.

PopSugar 2019: 31.
I think that I like the idea of this series better than I have the series. In this book, the first 175 pages or so were great-it started out strong...and then just got kind of boring. Don't get me wrong, it did pick up after that, but at that point I was kind of over it. I caught myself skimming alot. Never a good sign.
It is a very cool idea for a plot, though, it was the delivery that lacked.
This may be a wee bit ranty:
The Inferno Club is a bunch of spies who are trying to keep the Prometheans from conquering the world. Cool. Kate, our heroine, is kidnapped to use as leverage against her father, a sea captain/pirate who knows the location of The Alchemist's Tomb (ie treasure). So she is kidnapped and held for 5 weeks in a cellar and when the kidnappers are almost caught, their solution? To go to the duke of Warrington (our hero) and give Kate to him as a "gift." No really.
They drug her wine, she is presented as a drunk whore who wants to be some rich man's ladybird, and is hoping the duke will help her out. Since Kate's hot, and our duke is horny...he has her thrown in his chambers. But the laudenum has Kate passed out in front of the fireplace. He tries to wake his "gift" and she kinda slurs and wakes for a few moments, so he indulges himself with feeling her up-then he puts her on his bed, and gets her all hot and bothered, reaches for a condom in his nightstand...When he rolls over, she's out cold. So he sighs, decides he'll wake her for lovin' in the morning, and off he goes.
In the morning Kate panics, and runs. She almost gets free too, but she thinks the Duke is trafficking in white slavery (and that is why she thinks she was captured since her kidnappers told her he is a Beast and he plays with women). So she almost falls off a cliff, the duke saves her, the truth comes out that she's an innocent pawn in all this, then he finds out who she really is-she is the granddaughter of a Promethean who switched to their side. So she's basically French nobility and half-Promethean. His enemy!
He tries to figure out if she is innocent or if she's a very good actress. What bothered me was that he would believe her, then not believe her, back and forth even after 2 weeks, he takes her to her cottage, and it is burnt down. Nothing left...the devastation on her face finally allows him to believe her, and then he decides to offer her his carte blanch-a chance to be his mistress since she won't take charity (because being a mistress is much better than taking charity). He actually says he'll allow her to "work it off." Gah, how chauvenistic! what, on her back? Thanks Your Grace for disgusting me completely with your character. It's a shame since I liked him a lot. When he takes her virginity, he actually thinks that he'll finally trust her when he sees her blood...really? I mean really. He just kept trusting her, then not, then trusting her then not, and I know it was the author's way of showing us he was trying to find reasons not to trust her, but she didn't do anything to deserve his censure. It just came off as him being a prick.
After Rohan deflowers his new mistress, he tells her all about who she really is, and who he really is, and how their destinies have been entwined since he first saw her mother and father before she was born. Kate feels like he should have told her all this before he took her body (duh) and then shrugs it off. She does that a lot, and instead of coming off as strong and being able to get through anything, it makes her look like a doormat. Even when she finally gave him his money back and said she didn't want to be his mistress, just his love, she gave him an ultimatum...I hate that-they never work.
The next part of the book is an adventure along the likes of National Treasure, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Lara Croft Tomb Raider. I actually liked that part a lot more, but it was so short compared to the boring drawn out parts. They found the treasure room, and the tomb, and a key. Just like that. I wish that more had been devoted to the trials and difficulties surrounding the caves and tomb...
And she just met her papa for the first time in like 15 years! There was what, a paragraph devoted to that? Really? And yet with every single interaction between our H/h it is like one phrase, 4 pages of insight on said phrase, then someone responds to what was said, and 4 more pages on dissecting that answer. Ugh. Can we have a straight conversation please?
The key led them to certain scrolls and it was pretty neat, and I liked the ending, and the hasty Scottish marriage (loved that part!), but the book on a whole was pick and choose. I found I liked the beginning and I liked the last third of the book, but the middle was slow.
Igual me gustó mucho...
I finally finished this! It seriously took me over a month but ya know I can’t DNF also I didn’t want to DNF I just had so many other things to read.
Overall this one was pretty okay. The end got into National Treasure and Goonies territory a bit which was fun, but by that point I was just read to return this to the library. The story was interesting adjacent and if I happen to read the next book in the series, I don’t think I’d regret my life completely. Gaelen planted the seeds for the next books nicely.
The feud going on here was both interesting and exhausting. There was just a LOT of information about that I didn’t particularly care for. It also got a little dark and a little gruesome.
Kate was pretty great and the setup was unique and something I haven’t really read before. Rohan had his moments but he was a large douche canoe for a lot of the book. Consent was blurry at places and he made some stupid comments/had some cringey thoughts. This is from 2010 and it shows. I liked the overall writing but some of the conversation was stilted and unnatural. But I don’t think this would stop me from reading more from the author in the future!
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶🌶*/5
*Sex wasn’t anything remarkable. Two scenes and lord knows I forgot I had read the first sex scene since it was days between reading it lol. So technically it felt like three scenes since I reread it.
FIRST READ IN 2017!! My Dangerous Duke is exceptional story in the Inferno Club series. This story is Rohan about the Duke of Warrington. He is also know as the Beast and he is an Assassin for the Order Of St. Michaels. In this story Warrington has returned to his ancestral home Kilburn Castle. Some of his tenants have run afoul in his absence. To stay Warrington's punishment too themselves they kidnap a virgin sacrifice Miss Katherine Fox/Kate Madsen.
Once Warrington finds out that Kate is not a doxy but a gently born lady and has been use by the Promethean Council to lure her believed deceased father Capt. Fox in to save her. They want the scrolls from there first leader Valerian the Alchemist and only Capt Fox knows the location of were Valerian is buried along with the cults scrolls. The teachings of Alchemy.
The growing romance and love between Warrington and Kate is a lovely romantic tale. It pretty sensual too. It takes a bit for Warrington to trust Kate because she has Valerian Blood. The story has a host of other wonderfully written secondary characters. The story moves quickly with the H/H being intelligent loveable characters who work together and not separately. The storyline of the ties and the war between the Ancient Inferno Club, Order of St. Michaels and The Alchemist Valerian Promethean Cult Council is expanding and growing. This is a very interesting series and bks.1 and 2 will go on my re read list. Excellent stories! I am looking forward to reading bk.3 My Irresistible Earl. I Highly Recommend My Dangerous Duke, but I do suggest your read bk.1 first My Wicked Marquess first. 1 like
There are a number of reasons I could think of why this book could be nitpicked to the death today. And every single one of them made it more enjoyable for me. The right mood and all that. The first half is romance, the second half turns into sort of an adventure. It's uncommon, but it worked. Again, for me. The story comes very close to the old bodice rippers. Some of the things that happen or almost happen are a bit uncomfortable, but I enjoyed everything and I am not sorry. I loved both characters. I especially loved the heroine's patience. She wore him down and he didn't even know what hit him. Her kind of patience is rare in a story like this. I don't think she lost anything by being the way she was.
I hadn't read a bodice ripper in a long time, and when I saw this one it seemed really interesting.
This is sort of like a Beauty and the Beast bodice ripper, and I found it rather enjoyable. It's quite a tame bodice ripper, so nothing too hectic. Light enjoyable reading.
The heroine is kidnapped and given to the Duke as a "gift". Soon he realises that she's been wronged and he sets about trying to avenge her, and obviously romance buds along the way, while they figure out that they are connected in deeper ways than they imagined.
I enjoyed this and will probably look out for other books in this series to read in the future.
My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book. This one's got 3 parts.
Hmm, so ... Hmmmmm ... I'm not impressed with Rohan, yah, trying but not. I don't like the way he thinks and treats women. I sure as hell won't think about getting screwed by him if I was in Kate's place (she's daydreaming away about that) and yes, I would definitely be scared of my well-being. There I've said it.
Rohan thinks since his blood is cursed (ancient, mind you!), he can go screw almost anything in skirts (tall, short, blonde, brunette, thin, curvy ... yah it's all there), except virgins of course, who might want something else from him. Let me tell you about the curse, Warrington males kill their wives/brides, 'allegedly'! ... There is a scene where he tells Kate of all these, it was interesting but hello?! You're a lout of the first order Rohan! Cursed or not, living in a haunted castle (yah, he thinks his castle is haunted) or not. Apart from killing missions assigned by the Order, he likes to screw around (literally!) ... Ahemm, have I overdone it a bit? Well, he's a bit overdone himself. Doesn't matter he's a giant of a man with dark hair and silver eyes with a giant ... ahemm ... well ... There I go again! *zips her mouth about Rohan*
Now, Kate I found quite interesting, as long as she isn't thinking about getting shagged by him. I mean c'mon woman, be a little scared! I know I would be, whatever I heard about him and he didn't deny it. It's his past time, putting his 'killer mojo' up and ready! I read his gutter thoughts telling us:
His mind drifted, the wine warming his senses. It had now been three days since he’d had a woman, and he had not forgotten the way she had felt beneath him last night. He still wanted her in spite of himself.
WOW! That's loooong loooooong time! I see... Oh, you get the 'daily dose' right? Hmm ... Hell, there I go again (and again) ... But, what can I do? I have to keep up with him! Umm, hmm...
So, where was I? Oh, yes, so Kate was abducted from her home, where she was living alone and presented as a 'gift' to Rohan by his gang of pirates. There are a lotta twists and stuffs and histories (of Kate and Rohan, of the Order and the Counsel) but I won't go in there. The fact is, when Rohan isn't thinking about screwing her, he's kinda confused that she might be a spy of the Counsel (see: the history of Kate). So, now, Kate wants to go home but can't since it might be that her father is alive after all (fill in the blanks: the history of Kate). She has to 'stay' with Rohan in his castle. Oh, the misery! Rohan is a perfect gentleman now, at least outwardly, to her so she'd decided to trust him. I'm saying it again, I still think she's quite smart (at least smarter than Daphne) but this is sorta crazy. This whole storyline. I don't know what's gonna happen next, given that Rohan is having more and more of his 'unexpected (read: dead and buried) bouts of tenderness and possessiveness' towards her. Well, I guess, the obvious ...
I think this story, even though insane, is more interesting than My Wicked Marquess, because there are some scenes where I saw the glimpse of the 'old' Gaelen Foley (yup, decided to call her earlier works that) I so loved. I even felt that heady anticipation, though it didn't stay on for long. *******************
No, this story isn't AT ALL interesting. God, I'm feeling so frustrated. When you read a book knowing the author can write SO DAMN MUCH MORE BETTER and end up with some trash comparing to his/her earlier works, what do you do? This book is exactly that.
I thought Kate was smart, I take it back. She turned out to be exactly what her abductors said from the beginning, a dumba$$ wannabe whore. And, she later agrees to that herself, not the 'dumba$$' part, mind you! I never have respect, adoration for a heroine who makes herself an easy conquest, knowing what a pathetic moron (namely: rakes, a breed who'd screw anything in skirts!) the hero is. I had issues with SO DAMN MANY THINGS and her shrugging all those things off, ie:
1) Knowing what kinda man Rohan is, his past with women, shrugs off and jumps into his bed. The arragement they make is just felt like an excuse to f*ck each other, I didn't fall for the reasons behind that.
2) Knowing how her father kinda dumped her in the middle of nowhere (she knew him dead for 17 yrs!) and married again, lived with that family. Shrugs off and forgives him.
3) Again and again, knowing Rohan, making up reasons and shrugging off the obvious to stay as his whore. *this could make, in different ways, at least 10 other points*
I mean, wtf? Is he the last man on earth or something? C'mon! GF tried to force some reasons behind all these and none of them convinced me. They are unrealistic, mostly annoying, like Kate herself. I couldn't believe she trusted Rohan so easily and ... Ugh!
Rohan is just as awful. Believe me I tried and tried to sympathize with him, even love him a little but couldn't (reminds me so much of Dane in LoS). Would you believe he needs to get screwed or screw anything vaguely women, after every killing mission? He needs to vent off that ... I don't know what by getting f*cked and anyone will do! That's very disturbing ... and disgusting. He even tells Kate in the last love scene (which was almost rape IMO) that he can't get his hands off her, he needs to keep f*cking her constantly for this. I mean really? When it all begin, I did feel that he's taking advantage of her in a vulnerable moment. No, couldn't just SHRUG IT OFF! He won't marry because of the curse (*oaf*) and he thinks he's not worthy enough since he kills people (yah that was a good try Rohan but me ... no, not feeling anything for you, sorry.)
So, attraction, yes ... Lust, oh certainly! But love? NOPE! Whatever Kate thinks, if being infatuated and then getting screwed is the only reason she thinks she's in love with him, I'm sorry but that's not love in my eyes. And, I'm pretty sure Rohan, whatever it is Gaelen Foley will try to force on us, won't be 'in love' with her.
There were moments, I thought yes, maybe now I'll see something of the old GF style, maybe Kate will say something now but no such luck. One incident was, after they return to London, Rohan's many high society whores, altogether, just barged into his house thinking they could ... you know what ... And, although Rohan wasn't at home, Kate was. And that was so ewww ... They exchanged words about it later but Kate, still didn't think it's time to show him her back. Rohan, in so many words, even tells her he can't give her anything else. I mean does she have any dignity at all? ... Again, would you believe, she didn't even think it through that Rohan might pass her up in the future like those women and go his merry way! *I was on the verge of tearing my hair out reading this* You'd think now she'll do something but NO! Then there were those misleading monologues about love and whatever by Kate. Seriously, I think she needs to see a psychiatrist because living in isolation made her insane.
I only felt pity for the two, nothing else. I have nothing else to comment on story wise either since most of it is based on what I've just mentioned. The other histories, I'm not interested to write about them and make this comment longer than it already is. They're about to go on the mission to find the Alchemist's tomb. I wanted to say, please continue without me!
I'm not finished yet, two more chapters left but honestly, from the moment they made that ridiculous arrangement (that was on chap 12 I think), I just wanted this book to end. I had a very different idea about the book, it could've been amazing with a different storyline, Rohan could've been a gorgeous, sexy SOB and Kate, someone I adore ... *sigh* ********************
Ok, the ending was quite an improvement. I liked it from the scene they got married which was sweet. The adventure part was good but I'd rather see it on TV than try to imagine the whole thing. There were scenes that were supposed to move you but I was so far gone with this one, even though some of their exchanges were heartwarming, I didn't quite enjoy them. Kate had to 'prove' in various ways she loves Rohan, but Rohan did what ...? *rolls eyes*
In the end, there were a few things for the next installments:
1) Drake's saved, there is the mention of a violet-eyed girl. Maybe his love/heroine? I really wanna read his book but kinda uncertain about the series now. BTW: What'll be the title since GF used all marquess, duke and earl in the 1st 3? Drake's an Earl too. :p
2) Viscount Beauchamp aka Beau is here, the last hero I think. Most probably, Daphne's friend Carissa would be his match.
3) The ending marked something for Jordan, the next hero.
So, giving it a 3 star. I was actually hovering between 2/2.5 but I liked the ending and 1st 11 chapters. So ... :/

I've given this a B for narration and a C for content at AudioGals, so that's 3.5 stars overall
I really struggled with the first few hours of My Dangerous Duke, and had I not been listening for review, there’s a good chance I might have abandoned it. The narration by Marian Hussey is fine – in fact, it’s the best thing about the audiobook – and she’s a massive improvement on Annette Chown, who narrated the previous instalment (My Wicked Marquess) in the Inferno Club series. But the early part of the story progresses at the speed of a snail moving through molasses and is weighed down by lots of irrelevant and overly descriptive prose, so much so that I wished (and here I’m dating myself) I could cut and splice large chunks of it so as to keep things moving.
Fortunately, however, things do start to pick up a bit after that, as the hero and heroine finally meet and begin interacting. The story is one of murky secrets, dark deeds and feats of derring-do; in fact, the last section of the book turns into a cross between Indiana Jones and a computer game, as our intrepid heroes head off on the trail of a hidden treasure. There are plenty of sparks flying between them, although I’m somewhat weary of the hero who believes he is unworthy of love because He is A Bad Man Who Does Bad Things – and that’s the source of most of the conflict in the romance. I also had to check the publication date of the book – 2010 – because there’s an old-skool feel to My Dangerous Duke (especially when it comes to some of the wince-inducing purple prose – I hope Ms. Hussey was well compensated for having to utter lines like this: He knew how to safely wield the oversized weapon with which Nature had endowed him) that made me think it must have been written in the 90s or earlier.
The book opens some weeks after the kidnap of our heroine, Kate Madsen, by a gang of local smugglers. Totally bewildered, she is kept in a dark cellar until, in the opening chapter, she’s taken out, drugged up to the eyeballs and taken to Kilburn Castle, where she’s going to be presented as a “gift” to Rohan Kilburn, the Duke of Warrington. The duke is large, dark, handsome, famously bad-tempered… oh, and he’s cursed. Apparently the Warrington dukes end up killing their wives (so he can never, ever get married) and the castle is haunted. Kate might have been barely able to stand up in the duke’s presence, but she is able to appreciate his impressive physique and his dark hotness. He’s also horny – but draws the line at shagging an unconscious woman after Kate passes out in his bed. When she wakes up the next morning, she’s intent on escape and flees, ending up perilously close to the edge of the crumbling cliffs… (oh, no!) She slips (OH, NO!) but is saved by Rohan (phew!) who pulls her to safety and takes her back to the castle where, finally, she gives him her side of the story, together with A Piece Of Her Mind. Once that’s all settled, Rohan questions one of his oldest associates, who tells Rohan that despite Kate’s protestations to the contrary, she is really Kate Fox, the daughter of famed pirate Gerald Fox and a French noblewoman who was the daughter of a member of the Promethean Council, the ages-old nemesis of the Inferno Club. (As explained in the previous book, The Promethean Council is kind of a Regency version of Hydra, intent on world domination).
So now, it’s all unsettled again, and Rohan goes back to thinking that Kate might be a spy. Except he doesn’t really think she is. Or does he? He wavers over that a fair bit while the time they spend together over the next couple of weeks only serves to strengthen the already intense attraction between them. Yet even though – as we’re told repeatedly – Rohan has a voracious sexual appetite, he behaves as a gentleman around Kate, even though wanting her so badly is frustrating the hell out of him.
All that changes, though, when Rohan agrees to escort Kate back to her cottage, only to discover that it’s been burned down. She’s utterly distraught – but has the presence of mind to retrieve the book left her by her mother which she’d hidden in one of the outbuildings. This book contains clues to the location of the tomb of Valerian the Alchemist, one of the Promethean’s greatest treasures and for which they have been searching for generations.
Kate has no family and nowhere to go – and Rohan sees his chance. He offers Kate carte blanche (yeah, what a prince!), something he’s never done before, preferring to bed lots of different women rather than keeping a long-term mistress. He also has it in his head that if she’s a virgin, he’ll trust her story that she knows nothing of her heritage and will know she’s not there to spy on him. I … really can’t think of anything to say about that other than WTF?
Thing is, Kate is just as hot for him as he is for her, so she agrees to his proposition. After all, what other options does she have? She’s been living in the castle for the past couple of weeks, so her reputation is ruined anyway; she has no family to go to and no other prospects, so she might as well take what Rohan is offering – a generous allowance and his gorgeous body. It’s only after they’ve slept together that Rohan finally tells Kate that truth about her past and how it intertwines with his own family history.
After this is where the story turns into Historical Tomb Raider. I won’t give any more plot details – the book is quite plot-heavy compared with some historicals, and while it’s a bit bonkers, it’s not impossible to enjoy provided you’re prepared to take it all with a large pinch of salt and use action movies and treasure-hunt games as your points of reference.
The biggest problem I had with the story, though, was that I never warmed to either of the central characters. I suspect that the forbearance Kate continually shows Rohan is meant to show what a forgiving, level-headed person she is, but most of the time, I found her too much of a doormat. And as I said at the outset, Rohan is your stereotypical darkly brooding hero with a chequered past, with nothing to distinguish him from the many, many others of his ilk.
I enjoy listening to Marian Hussey so I was pleased when this title showed up at Audible with her name attached to it. She’s an accomplished narrator on all counts; her pacing is excellent in both narrative and dialogue, she differentiates expertly between characters according to gender, age and station, and she is able to utilise a variety of regional accents to good effect. She’s also a very good vocal actress and is able to inject the right degree of emotion into any given scene, not going too far or giving too little. Kate’s dialogue sometimes sounds too whiny –but when I went back through the text to some of the examples I’d noted, I found the dialogue itself was whiny, so Ms. Hussey’s delivery is appropriate for what is on the page. Her male voices are generally good; hers is a mezzo-range voice, so she is able to sustain a lowered pitch for the men without it sounding strained. I did, however, notice a tendency to puff out a breath at the ends of phrases and sentences, particularly in Rohan’s speech, and especially when he was supposed to be shouting or angry. It’s difficult to describe in writing, but it’s almost as though she adds an extra syllable to the ends of words, so that a phrase like “See you soon”, comes out as “See you soon-ah”. I didn’t notice this happening with any of the female voices, and it didn’t happen with all the males – but it became quite obtrusive at times.
One thing I often notice when I listen to an audiobook is that repetitions of certain words and phrases stand out more than when I’m reading the book. Perhaps my aural memory is stronger than my visual one (I do tend to read pretty quickly, whereas an audiobook takes as long as it takes). In this, characters looking “askance” seems to be their favourite activity J
Once I got past the first two or three hours of My Dangerous Duke, it was an enjoyable enough romp, but is unlikely to be something I’ll listen to again. The pacing is very uneven – there are recurring instances of lengthy description that slow down the narrative – and the story is very slightly batshit, but if you’re in the mood to switch your brain off for a few hours and just go with the flow, the narration is good enough to carry the listener through the worst excesses. Mind you, I still stay Ms. Hussey deserves a medal for managing to utter lines about the hero’s “raging member” and his “notorious size” without corpsing.
This was a really odd novel. I feel like the storyline was scattered but at the same time there was a very specific plot that I was neither interested in or understood.
The romance though? That is where the story excelled. The chemistry between the two main characters? Wow. Plus I loved the main character's protective alpha male attitude which I typically wouldn't lean towards but this novel did it right.
I wish I liked (and understood) the plot more because nearing the end, where there was real adventure, it came across as a mix of both "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Mummy" (both of which I love). However, I just don't think the plot was executed well enough. There were lots of details but none were laid out in an easy to read way.
PWs, I have to tell you about this one. I usually don't post my smut novels, but this one had a line so bad, it had to be immediately posted for your giggles. Page 29 "If she was nervous of his size, she needn't have feared that, either. He knew how to safely wield the oversized weapon with which Nature had endowed him." Seriously. I usually like this author, so I will finish the book and rate it. But, that line is the worst I've ever read in a smut novel, I think--even though I am quite certain I have read (or jettisoned) worse smut novels as a whole.
Okay...so here's the rest. Got better, but still not outstanding. Not one of her better books, so I actually skimmed chunks. But, it's part of a trilogy or quartet of books, so I finished it. BTW, I don't think there was any sex until page 200 or something, so the reference to the weapon on p. 29 was even more bizarre.
Kate Madsen is no ordinary lady, for she is the daughter of a Pirate and is not afraid of anything. Until she is kidnapped and given to the Beast for a gift of pleasure. Rohan Kilburn is known as the Beast and never plans to marry for the Curse of the Kilburn family haunts his dreams. Yet when he is givin his Gift Rohan never thought to feel the things Kate starts sturring in his blood. As the battle that has upturned both their worlds rages outside so does their desire for each other rages inside.
Ugh whatever, I just wanted this book to end so badly. It just kept going and going. I love Gaelen Foley's plots and characters usually but this whole book to me was her trying to convince the reader, and Kate herself that Rohan wasn't an absolute asshole for I don't know, a shit ton of reasons? From their first meeting he took advantage of her, and honestly, he just kept taking advantage of her and manipulating her which was ugly. Anyway WHATEVER this romance was so bloody unconvincing and started on and ended on such sketchy beginnings. I didn't care for anyone.
Two things have bothered me right from the start. And when I went to read a few other reviews, I realised that these two things are a constant throughout the whole story. Sadly, I can't fully finish My Dangerous Duke.
My Dangerous Duke is the second book in Gaelen Foley's Inferno Club series. Kate Madsen is abducted from her home by a band of thieves and offered up to Rohan Kilburn as a gift. Rohan is known by most as "The Beast". Those who look upon his ferocious countenance fear his wrath. Kate is taken to his estate, drugged and against her will as a peace offering of sorts. Fortunately for Kate, Rohan might be a Beast, but he also is intelligent and easily realizes that Kate is much more complicated than she seems. Her mysterious origins, once discovered, lead Rohan to make a tough decision when it comes to their future.
I have always enjoyed Gaelen Foley's writing. One of my favorite historical romance books is The Duke which was written about ten years ago. I read the first book in this series and I wasn't too crazy about it. However, I enjoyed My Dangerous Duke more than I did My Wicked Marquess. First of all, I enjoyed the setting and characters. The book sets a very gothic feel to the mood by residing in the gloomy winter time off the cliffs of Cornwall. Kate is taken to a dark and dismal castle complete with dungeons. Rohan is a Beast of a man with a surly disposition and plenty of scars, both mental and physical.
I wouldn't necessarily say My Dangerous Duke is breaking any new ground with this story. Yet, I found the characters enjoyable and the writing entertaining and fast paced. There were a few times I was annoyed with Rohan and his tendency to jump to conclusions where Kate was concerned. Fortunately, he quickly comes to his senses and realizes Kate is not hiding anything from him. What you see is what you get with Kate. She really is a sweet and likable heroine. I also enjoyed how Kate and Rohan work together at the end of the book to solve the mystery pertaining to Kate's heritage. I found My Dangerous Duke to be a fine historical romance, one certainly worth giving a try if you haven't ever tried Ms. Foley before.
This was a very forgettable book for me. I really enjoyed Gaelen's The Duke, mostly because the story was centered around the main characters, and there was angst, and love, and pain, and regret, and above lots of grovelling and forgiveness. In this series Gaelen spends too much time on the cult/mystery aspects of the story and spends very little time on the love story between the characters. I was skim reading after two chapters or something.
A great beginning to this novel but unfortunately the author lost momentum and the story just kept getting a bit bland at times. The heroine started off as being very strong minded and independent but after she got intimate with the H, she became a bit too tamed. The H took a very long time to come terms with his love for the heroine. The secondary story line kept me more entertained when the romantic relationship between the H and H became stagnant.
Here is a historical romance that is for the truly serious lover of the genre and who finds the complicated story and extensive cast of characters stimulating and educational in its own way. Such are the novels of Gaelen Foley and those who are in possession of such a hunger for novels that are meaty in their content and written with flair and vivre, this is their kind of book. This is what one reviewer called an " . . . improbable spy story" complete with the undercover government agents disguised as a social club of debauched aristocrats on the one side, and a hidden group of people who for generations have been plotting and carrying out their grandiose plans for world domination. Yet the real story here that carries the action forward is the involvement of Rohan, Duke of Warrington, and Kate Madsen, an abductee who has been caught up in the mysterious hunt for treasure and information that surrounds the duke. Kept in captivity for five weeks, she is ultimately presented to Rohan as "a gift" and one he freely accepts believing that she is a whore given to him by his colleagues for his pleasure and as a way to insure his good moods. Known as "the Beast," Rohan is known for his temper and for the rather bizaare ways in which he demonstrates his disfavor.
The Duke is one of the most powerful men in England and yet he has chosen to allow his family line to die, all due to his rather weird belief in a family curse. That he is an accomplished assassin enhances this belief and has now driven this man to choose never to marry. That he ultimately becomes attracted to Kate in something of an obsessed way is never in doubt but whether or not he is willing to own up to loving her is another matter altogether. And while Kate's eventual love for Rohan opens her to possible hurt and rejection, she is a woman who knows her own mind and one who is willing to allow her considerable intellect to have a say in the way she fashions her future. Kate is indeed one of those very unusual women who has lived on her own for most of her life and who has come to believe that the lonely, sedentary life is what lay ahead for her. Rohan is drawn to her capacity for surviving experiences that would have reduced many a fine miss to hysterics and through her cool awreness of the situations in which she finds herself, is willing to allow Rohan liberties, but she is not sure if she is willing to allow him to shape her entire future.
This novel is really about the paralyzing power of fear to change one's perspective to the degree that they opt out of living. It is also about the age-old battle between good and evil, an evil that has pervaded some families for generations and which is threatening to upend society as it was known in that day. It is also about the power of authentic love to overwhelm fear, to rejuvenate and to remake, to empower and to renew, even when disillusionment has taken all the vitality out of one's life. Ms Foley writes complicated novels, and this book is no exception. A second book in the Inferno Club series, this novel continues the saga of those intrepid investigators that feel like they are always on the verge of a breakthrough. It is also about the power of that same love to bring light and understanding into minds, hearts, and circumstances that have slowly but surely come to a point where all the key figures dwell in darkness, literally and figuratively.
I found this novel to be compelling in its scope and extensively well-researched. The segments that dealt with the danger and all its attributes have slowly become dark spaces in Rohan's life and his undercover activities as an assassin are at the point where they are threatening to push out any semblance of light in his mind. There were times when I felt the political and baldly historical passages almost overwhelmed the book and I have to admit that after awhile I felt inundated and had to lay the book down. Yet the joy of this book is its unrelenting attention to Rohan & Kate's relationship that never is allowed to falter. There are a number of surprises that caught me off guard, but I happen to like that. It's sort of Fibber McGee's closet--it just opens up and falls all over you when you least expect it. Only the best writers really know how to do that.
So I recommend this book as one that is worthy of sinking one's teeth into deeply, and one which will hold your interest, at least the love story part of it. True historical romance fiction fans will find this new and different and that departure from the usual historical romance refreshing.
I give it a rating of 4.25 out of 5.

When Kate is kidnapped from her home, drugged, and taken to the home of the Duke of Warrington, she doesn't know what to make of him. He is very mysterious, very handsome in a very sinful way, and he makes her body heat with just one look. However he is always questioning her, and she is the innocent one in all of this, but as they both get closer to the truth, the closer the danger gets, the more intense their desire for each other escalates into a powerful love even though they know its dangerous....My Dangerous Duke is the second in the series, and again I am reading this series out of order, but even though it would be nice to read it in order, sometimes I get too impatient, and I just grab what I can find. I have found that it can be read out of order, but then again I can catch on pretty easily....My Dangerous Duke starts out wit Kate being drugged, and you see that she is really courageous and faces up to Rohan not knowing if he is the type of man to rape or not, but she soon finds out that he is not what the legend say. Rohan, has stayed away from his home in the country for a very good reason, but now he has to be there at least for a little while. Rohan, is very suspicious of Kate especially through the first half of the book, however we start to see that once you bang your head enough then eventually you will start to see reason. It was pretty funny to see Rohan and Kate clash against each other, there was also a sexual tension through the whole story that keeps one captivated, and could fog one's windows if your not careful....I just loved the danger aspect to the plot, it just kept me on the edge of my seat the majority of the time, and the mystery was a perfect element to the book, and added a sense intrigue and excitement that becomes very engaging....and the detail of the events that happen are very vivid in a certain way.....A exciting thrill of a romance!!!
