Robin Masterson and Cole Camden have both loved and suffered losses in their lives, but when they first meet when she goes to live next to him they see something special in each other. But first they have to find out if they can overcome their sadness for the things that happened with them, heal and maybe have a second chance at love. Fluffy and heartwarming read.

There were some issues with consent that were a bit questionable.
He leaned in for a kiss and she said no please, but he said yes please and kissed her.
And while they were kissing she said no and he kept kissing her anyway.
And in a truly creep move, after the kissing he said something like why are you fighting me?

As always, I think Debbie has very endearing characters that make a meh story still enjoyable. This one is about a widowed woman (robin) and her 10 year old son. They finally get enough money to buy a house and they move in next to a dark and broody man. They meet his dog before they meet him and the boy and dog fall in love. Jeff (the boy) wants a dog so bad but they can’t have one yet because the mom works all day and they can’t afford a fenced in yard. Jeff has a big personality and his love for the dog breaks a crack in the tough shell of the neighbor (Cole). The story goes on and we find out that coles wife and son died (although he was already separated or divorced) in a tragic accident. He and robin fall in love but she’s hesitant because she doesn’t want to just be a replacement family. In the end, they end up together and all is well.
I didn’t like how quick this book went. Coles hard exterior softened almost immediately to robin and Jeff and for being so notoriously closed off and unfriendly as he was, I thought it was pretty unrealistic.
I really liked Jeff’s character. Seems like a cute kid. Overall I’d definitely recommend.

Jeff and Blackie the dog are endearing.
Robin wasn’t communicative enough causing some angst in this reader .. but it all worked out .. patient hero.

Father’s Day is Debbie Macomber’s 42nd stand-alone romance novel. When widow, Robin Masterson, and her 10-year-old son Jeff move out of their apartment into a house with a garden, Jeff is looking forward owning a dog. Unfortunately, Robin feels they can’t afford a dog just yet. Luckily, there’s a lovely black labrador right next door. Trouble is, Blackie is owned by Cole Camden, and Cole seems to be the unfriendliest man in the neighbourhood. Jeff has a way with animals, and it seems, with unfriendly men, as well, as soon Cole is smiling more often, especially at Robin. But once Robin learns about the tragedy in Cole’s past, she’s not sure of his motives when he asks her to marry him. Another sweet romance from Debbie Macomber.

Great Love Story

Debbie characters are written for women like me. There's so much emotion, so much joy. Her books are a delight to read. One can visualize her characters as we read and become part of their existence. Another winner!

originally published in 1991: pre cell phones, match.com, streaming videos (they actually rewound vhs tapes) this is a charming, heart tugging story of a 10yr old boy who really wants a dog and a dad.

Robin and Jeff Masterson's have moved to San Francisco, CA, after the tragic loss of her husband, Lobby. Jeff wants a dog, but Robin doesn't have the means or time to attend to a dog.

Robin is still grieving Lonny's loss with a heavy heart. It doesn't matter the years a loved one has been gone. The pain is still there. Like Robin, Cole Camden has suffered a loss due to his wife and son dying in a DUI involved collision.

Cole is Robin and Jeff's next-door neighbor. However, Cole isn't too friendly. Cole has a dog named Blackie, who Jeff befriends. Cole doesn't want Robin and Jeff on his property, but as time goes on, Cole starts to have a soft heart for his neighbors.

Cole and Robin started a friendship and learned the 2 have something in common. That's grief and loss. After spending time together, the 2 fall in love, but Robin is hesitant and doesn't know if she is making the right decision.

Sometimes, when life gives us second chances, we should take them; have faith in the unknown that the future and fate have in store for us. Cole and Robin became exactly who and what they needed. Each other.

I'm glad I finished this on Father's Day. Jeff is my favorite character. This dude was hilarious and had me guffawing at his silliness and sense of humor.

*3.5

This was honestly... a lot better than I expected it to be. The hero and heroine were well-developed, and I liked their chemistry a lot. Furthermore, I loved that the book's conflict was small-scale and yet felt very urgent. The conflict was also believable given the hero and heroine's past, and it made the third act genuinely engaging. Also, Debbie Macomber gets points for portraying a child character who actually feels like a ten-year-old boy. However, there were a couple of points in the book that made no logical sense, as well as a scene in which WE know that the heroine wants to kiss the hero despite saying no multiple times, but the HERO doesn't, and that left a bad taste in my mouth. For that reason, I docked it from a 4 to a 3.5

Even though I'm giving this book a generous two stars (because it really, really doesn't deserve more than that), I actually enjoyed reading this little bit of nostalgia. I picked it up at the Little Free Library near where I live. From ages 11-14 or so I read tons of these books from the public library. Reading it now it reminds me just how much society has changed. Sure, romance novels of today are still formulaic and have their tropes, but this book had all sorts of things in it that wouldn't fly in the world of "me too," and females no longer being viewed as the weaker, more fragile sex lol.

Robin Masterson is a young widow and Cole Camden is a young divorcee. They each believe they cannot and will not fall in love again. Then Robin moves next door to Cole with Jeff her ten year old son. Will time heal their hearts and open them to love again? This was a short and sweet romance story and I really enjoyed it.

Great family story about a divorcee and women who has a ten year old boy and how they connect. They are next door neighbors.
Debbie Maccomber writes wholesome family books most of the time. Only one book out of many I have read would not recommend.
