At Real Bout High School, teachers don't break up fights, they grade them In a school where martial arts are the standard curriculum, Ryoko is kicking butt and taking names. The Real Bout manga spawned the hit anime series. With elements similar to The Matrix, Charlie's Angels, and Tomb Raider, Real Bout combines martial arts with a strong female lead--the perfect recipe for today's teen audience.
Welcome to Daimon High in Japan, where disputes are settled with street fights! However, the recently implemented K-Fight system isn't limited to disputes between students alone. A potentially school-shattering development has happened where one rowdy student, Shizuma Kusanagi, has challenged disciplinarian teacher Mister Saotome to a fight! Principal Todo has allowed it, and the entire school is amped up to see what happens. Ryoko Mitsurugi, the school's samurai idol, also has an interest in this fight...in spite of the fact it might be an elegy of the fragile dynamic of teachers being in charge and students obeying the establishment! The results might surprise you as Ryoko strives to become a force of justice as she's inspired by Tatsuya, the Kendo Club president, who she's majorly crushing on! Meanwhile, Ryoko's best friend Hitomi struggles to find a way to keep the samurai idol from getting into fights. Easier said than done...
Like I said before, imagine high school intensified, and that's SAMURAI GIRL! The eccentric, often over-the-top atmosphere of the story is punctuated by crude, roughhouse humor, but along the way we also see thoughtful development of the core characters as they try to overcome the problems any high schooler must inevitably face. Shizuma, for one thing, isn't just a fun-loving brawler...he has his fair share of difficulty adjusting to Daimon High and finding his place amongst the students. Ryoko, meanwhile, has come rely on Tatsuya as her reason for fighting. And as we get to know these characters better, the inevitable pitfalls they will have to face will only become more poignant...

I actually read this series out of order when I started reading it back in High School. I read volume one, then I read the final three, so I missed out on reading volumes two and three and I missed some data. Mainly, what happened in regards to Tatsuya and some of the other characters before the big adventure in Volumes four through six.
Well, this volume is a little better, or at least different, than volume #1. A good amount of characters and story have/has already been established and now we get to see them interact and expand more. Ryoko shows some more vulnerability in this volume, but in a good way, especially since it builds up the big match event in volume three of the six-part story. However, aside from the big K-Fight match between Shizuma and the Chemistry teacher, the character of Shizuma is less developed and rather one-dimensional. However, he is not much of a jerk, save for one scene near the end, to Ryoko. The story more focuses on the romance between Ryoko and Tatsuya, as well as showing the new character of Shiori of the Drama Club, who is a childhood friend of Tatsuya's.
This volume flows fast and is exciting. Especially near the end, when Tatsuya drops a shocking bombshell on everyone's lives. Also, I truly love the artwork. It's fun, cute, and classic teen Anime/Manga.
Vol 2 of Real Bout High School. I have, actually, read volume one previously. It just wasn't interesting enough for me to want to seek out the rest of the series. I do, however, have the anime on DVD for whenever that happens. I feel much the same about the second volume as I did about the first. It's fine. It'll probably be a better anime.
