Skye Meredith was devastated by her husband’s fatal accident. But now she was trying to pick up the pieces of her life, to forge a career as a children’s photographer. All was going well…until she received a mysterious package in the mail—undeveloped photos of a beautiful young woman, brutally strangled by a psychopathic killer.
Then it happened again. And again.
More disturbing photographs. More horrible murders. And the police began to suspect that Skye was somehow involved. Fearful of every man in her life—even her new lover—Skye never felt more alone, or more terrified.
Because now there is a new roll of photographs in Skye’s mailbox.

From Deanie:
I have led an unexpected life. Grew up in the city, but married a cowboy and moved to a remote west Texas ranch. Raised my two amazing children in the country with horses and dogs and cats and wild animals, but at the same time, traveled the country researching crime novels with law enforcement officers of all types and speaking to writers about our craft. An independent and unabashed feminist who opposed the Iraq war, I still stayed married for more than 30 years to the same wonderful man and sent my son to fight with the Marines in Iraq twice. Both my kids are strong and independent too, and remain my biggest fans; they are the accomplishment of which I am most proud, even after publishing eleven books. My daughter pursued her craft, acting, in London, New York, and now, L.A. My son is out of the Marines and would like to see the war end sooner than later so his buddies can come home. And I’m still married to the same sexy cowboy.
I have a 15mo toddler and I haven't had a full night of sleep in almost two years. I tell you this so you'll understand how precious sleep is to me when I say that I was up until 2:30am finishing this book.
This is a very tightly written suspense/mystery novel from 1990, newly re-released as an ebook. The pacing is exacting. Actions escalate regularly throughout the book, keeping you drawn in. Characters are introduced - and thanks to the reader getting a view into the guilty person's head, we see similarities with the suspect that the protagonist doesn't, adding again to the suspense.
If this was a movie, people would be shouting at the screen, "DON'T TRUST HIM (OR HER)!"
The side crime in this book - some might consider this a spoiler, although it's introduced early on - - is handled without being made sensational. You can tell the author did her research throughout the book, from police procedure, to forensics, to photography. Descriptions are precise without being pedantic.
I have to admit part of the draw - and part of the suspense - in this book is the time period, 1990. Pre-home computer, pre-internet, pre-cellphone, pre-CSI on tv. It was fascinating to see the limitations as well as how much technology had been adopted.
Highly recommended for any mystery/suspense and even true crime fans. Oh, and there's one erotic scene to whet your appetite for tall, tan, intelligent cowboys. :)
Skye Meredith is a children's photographer. She's rebuilding her life after an auto accident took her husband's life and her ability to walk without a cane.
One day she goes home to find a large envelope in the mail. In it are pictures of a woman...a dead woman. She throws everything in the bathtub and sets it on fire. The next week, she receives another package with pictures of another dead woman ... strangled. This time she goes to the police.
When it happens yet again, she becomes the prime subject. A journalist for a local newspaper wants to help. He has contacts. The next pictures that come .. are all of her. She has now been warned that it is her turn.
This is an older book I came across in my TBR room ... Lord knows how long I've had it. I was just going to thumb through and see if anything caught my interest. Needless to say, it did. I read it in about 4 hours.
I really liked the book. The mystery led me to think of several characters.. men coming and going through her life. The ending came unexpectedly. The main characters are just nice people trying to make the most of what they have.
Think I'll go rummage through my reading room and see what other goodies are waiting for some attention. :-)
So glad that she's released these favorites into ebook format since I couldn't tell you where my old paperback copies are on a bet or a dare. Started "Darkroom" this morning w/ my coffee, and have spent a wonderfully lazy day of intrigue, murder, & mayhem. The twists & turns are great, & will really keep you guessing. A super read!
Now it's 4pm & time to cook supper. I hate when that happens: I'd rather be reading!
