The diary of an American colonial-era man in New London, Connecticut that contains a wealth of details about not only his own life but the general social and material composition of his town at the time. Therefore, as a primary source, it's of great value to historians but it's also a very interesting book to read for anyone intrigued by colonial history. The fact he maintained the diary for so long really helps it provide a comprehensive, encompassing, view of New London and its environs. There is an explicatus that was written fairly recently (maybe in the past couple of decades) that provides additional background info on New London at the time and looks to be very useful, but I've not purchased that yet—still, I probably will. The diary itself is fascinating, but if you're not up on general aspects of colonial life at the time, you may not get everything out of it you could which seems a good reason to get the explicatus, too.
