MEN OF THE BIBLE WILL GIVE YOU NEW WAYS OF LOOKING AT YOUR BIBLE HEROES!
The Bible is full of men and women who shapped our world. Here D. L. Moody tells the story of nine men. Some you know, Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist...some you may not know, Naaman, The Penitent Thief, Nehemiah. All had a role to fulfill and Moody tells their stories in a historical and enlightening manor. Men of the Bible includes stories of : Abraham's Four Surrenders, The Call of Moses, Naaman the Syrian, The Prophet Nehemiah, Herod and John the Baptis,t The Man Born Blind and Joseph of Arimathea and the Penitent Thief!
Dwight Lyman Moody was a predominant evangelist, author, and publisher. Raised on a farm in Massachusetts, he moved first to Boston, where he converted to evangelical Christianity in 1856, and then to Chicago, where he prospered in business. He gave up business in 1860 and engaged in missionary work with the YMCA (1861-73).
He founded Moody Church and preached in the slums, emphasizing literal interpretation of the Bible and the need to prepare for the Second Coming. In 1870 he teamed up with the hymn writer Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908), and they began a series of highly popular revival tours in Britain and the U.S. Moody founded the Northfield School (1879), the Mount Hermon School (1881), and the Chicago Bible Institute (1889; now the Moody Bible Institute).
I love reading Moody's books. He writes in a very accessible voice, and I feel like I would have loved to hear him preach. Very down-to-earth, plain-speaking.
D. L. Moody is a great teacher and preacher , he has great wisdom and insight. I enjoyed his book with all but one exception, his liberal embellishments of the Biblical accounts. He begins by using the correct scriptures, then adds to the story. For example,"I can imagine that Abraham talks to Isaac and tells him how hard it is to offer him up." He further adds, "They fell on their faces, and prayed together. After prayer I can see the old father take his boy to his bosom.." This is not scriptural at all, just embellished. If we do not adhere to the purity of scriptures, very soon the word of God becomes corrupted by our human error.
I found this book very encouraging and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book to any man or woman who is seeking to be a better follower of Christ. The men highlighted work similar to a character profile in say, a study Bible, but far more in depth. There is application for anyone seeking to be a better Christian.
"Men of the Bible" contains several stories of bible. With each story, one can get to know so much insightful morale.
The short stories are about seven sermons on Abraham, Moses, Naaman, Nehemiah, Herod and John the Baptist, the man born blind and Joseph of Arimathea and the panitent thief.
Author has chosen these characters very selectively connecting the dots of ultimate truth and life lessons. It's dignified when he pointed the blackest spot in life of father of faith, Abraham.
Author D.L.Moody's writing and conveying style is quite impressive and profound in his simplicity.
Book is short and free read, available on Kindle. Go for it.
The first couple chapters I wasn’t the most impressed with as I thought the writer made too many assumptions. However when reading further into the book I found many insightful lessons and truths that were revelled through these stories in the Bible. Would highly recommended reading.

This book is awesome and it is a relatively short read. DL Moody provides great insights into this collection of men from the Bible, their lives, and relationships with God while challenging and encouraging the reader. His perspective of the Biblical accounts shed new light on what I thought I knew about these men.
First of all I love that so many Bible resources are free on my Kindle. Dwight Moody always gets me to think more about what I read in the Bible and this book is a great example of that. What do we really know about men in the Bible aside from the passages? Very little to go on because like a lot of us men, these guys are long on action and short on words. Thank you for another great resource for my library
Moody offers a unique take on some familiar (and some not-as-familiar) stories from the Bible. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but I'm glad I read it. (And I'm glad it was a free Kindle download!)
Insightful as ever, even decades after its writing.
This inspiring account of several important men in the old and new testaments will evoke nothing less than a quickening fire within thy breast, as if to say where have you gone oh heart of mine, why hast thou forgotten me?
I found the book both inspiring and educational. Written by a man who dedicated his life to reaching the lost, the book is filled with life and death matters, always with the cross of Christ in view. And Moody describes these men of the Bible in such a way that revealed much I did not know and much I long to know more about. What a master of describing this word of God such that men can know without a doubt the stuff of godly character and integrity. What a treasure is this book to me.
I'm researching 19th century evangelicism and thought this might be a good contrast/comparison to someone like Henry Ward Beecher, the staunch abolitionist. I was surprised at how modern the language sounded. It gave me an idea of the way that religious ideas were to be spread through anecdotal applications of lessons of the bible, rather than through specialist leaders, but I think I'll keep reading other speeches and tracts to find more expressive forms of preaching.
Great study of some of the great men of the Bible! Definitely learned some insights from these men who were imperfect, but all who nevertheless obeyed God despite their flaws. While I liked the shortness of this book, I thought it would be more powerful if Moody studied more men to be more impactful (and live up to the title). Wasn't as thorough and analytical as I anticipated, but definitely learned valuable things, such as surrender, obedience, and humility.
A short, readable book with a couple of theological errors but this did not detract from the overall lessons to be learned from these men of the Bible, some of whom I had not given as much thought to as men of great faith. The author puts a personal and speculative insight onto the possible ruminations of these men. Well worth a read.
I absolutely loved it. Naaman, the Penitent and The Thief at the Cross were the parts that stuck with me. Now I understand why Moody is one of the most respected. I will read again. It is one of my favorites. One thing about Moody. You do not read his opinion. You read what was revealed to him. You can see it.
What a great book that stands the test of time [written over 100 years ago]. 7 sermons on Abraham, Moses, Naaman, Nehemiah, Herod and John the Baptist, the man born blind and Joseph of Arimathea, and the penitent thief comprise this little volume. Moody is easy to read, interesting and spiritually helpful. Mood is profound in his simplicity and simple in his profundity. Highly recommended.
I'll say the last several parts were definitely more engaging for me than the first two parts, though that may be because these were stories I wasn't as familiar with because they're less standard Sunday school stories than Abraham or Moses. I just had very little motivation to read either of those parts because it felt like nothing I hadn't heard before.
Dwight L. Moody takes you through the accounts of several men in the Bible showing how God changed them and used them for His glory. If you want a challenge to your walk with God, this is a book for you.
Brother of Kenzie speaking. It was a blessing to be able to read a book like so. The author is blessed and I am well pleased to read a good message from a true disciple of Jesus!
The examples of ordinary men making changes in their lives which them to have a new mind change. How many times have I asked my self why me, God? What question should the clay ask the potter?
I picked up this book because 1. it was free on iBooks (lol) 2. I wanted to feel more connected to my faith. Moody did great in explaining the takeaways of the several stories of the Bible, even adding in his own thoughts, expanding on the characters' moralities. Very readable and insightful.
I am so glad I bumped into this amazing book. I have gained unimaginable spiritual insights into some Bible events I never knew existed. I'm immensely grateful to DL Moody for being such a blessing.
Lord, remember me. As you look to this writing in light of scripture there is truth. How we need preaching to remind us of our weakness made perfect in Christ.
And this updated version is a great introduction to his heart and teachings. Many wonderful insights into these men of the Bible, things we normally might not have thought about. Five stars...no question!
Very insightful look at some overlooked men of faith, showing their strength and weakness. Moody has an incredible gift of bringing characters to life (some preachers licence is used) This an easy read with short digestible chapters. Great for teens!
What an amazing and inspirational author. His writings provide more motivation and inspiration than most preachers I've ever heard in my entire life. I'm going to search for additional books by D.L. Moody!.
I enjoyed this book very much. I found it very thought proving. To look at the men from their side of the story. All were simple men. Yet they follow the word of God. Because they did God used them to show him love and grace.
