Destiny vs. Choice: The Scientific and Spiritual Evidence Behind Fate and Free Will

Rate this book
Since the day we are born, we are bombarded with the contradictory claims that our lives are predestined and that Fate deals us the cards we must play, or that our lives are the results of our choices and that we shape it as we go along.

Destiny vs. Choice examines the philosophical, spiritual, and scientific evidence for both claims, and shows us how we can live better, more fulfilling lives no matter which side ultimately "wins" the debate.

This is a good book, and an interesting exploration into all things related to the concepts of destiny, fate, free will and choice, and how these can affect our lives.
The book explores in varying detail: historical ideas and philosophical thinking about fate and free will; evolution; quantum physics; The Law of Attraction; the paranormal; DNA; astrology; and religious ideas about reincarnation.

It will not give you a definitive answer as to whether our lives are predetermined, or if we have a choice over what happens to us, but it introduces and explains many different beliefs, from religious to scientific and everything in between. It also affirms the notion that most people believe in something in between i.e. that both destiny and choice play a part in our lives to a certain degree. I wasn’t sure whether all of the information in the book was accurate (for example, the lines shown on the hand when the author was describing palmistry did not correspond with the traditionally accepted palmistry lines), and some of the scientific/quantum physics explanations left me confused. On the whole though, it is a fun and entertaining look at different ideas surrounding whether fate is responsible for what happens in our lives. I also liked reading the true stories at the end of the book about how fate/destiny/free will had played a part in different people’s lives.

On the whole, the books seems well researched and contains a great deal of information on the subject that will help to inspire people who would like to look deeper into these concepts.
I like the author’s style of writing and her upbeat and humourous narrative helped to keep me interested.
There is definitely a lot of food for thought contained within the pages of this book and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered whether our lives are controlled by a higher power, or whether we can steer our lives in any direction we choose.

Offers a comprehensive view of the argument, well both sides of the argument. Not especially detailed. So you will not be an expert after reading this one, but for me the book mentions enough outside sources to give me a list of books to track down now.

I love the quote on the back cover -

FATE VS. FREE WILL: YOU DECIDE!

Is that a joke? Well, the publisher (or whoever wrote the back cover copy) certainly believes in free will.

Marie Jones approaches both sides with a fair and open mind. As she says in the book, she is a diplomat. And she covers a lot of ground. From science to religion, astronomy to astrology, dna to divination, from the Big Bang to who lit the fuse on it, this book is an overview of many aspects to consider regarding the battle of free will vs determinism.

The writing itself is mostly informal and accessible. It's not a dry college textbook. If you watch Big Bang Theory and don't need it explained to you, you'll be fine.

The only thing I didn't like was the last 29 pages, which were "Stories of Fate and Free Will" which for me, only served to water down the book, making it more consumery and less scholarly. Then again, I found the book in the New-Age section and not the Philosophy section, and I'm sure that was the author's choice...

...or was it?
