A great deep dive into the work of a great man.
I have read a handful of Bonhoeffer's work and while I did appreciate them (especially cost of discipleship) I don't think I fully understood what he was going for. This book contextualizes Bonhoeffer so well that I feel as if I actually can follow and apply his thought.
What I am most interested in and will be thinking about for weeks is being a Christian in a world come of age. What does it mean to be a Christian when Thomas's five proofs are essentially void? To think of God not on the periphery but right in the center of the world is what it takes (according to Dietrich). The Christian God is far more the God of the Cross and incarnation than the Aristotelian unmoved mover. Bonhoeffer's engagement with the world on the level of thought and action are remarkable. Not to overstretch it, but his thought may be more practical for American Christians in 2026 than it has been since its writing.
Highly recommend.
