Leaving a trail of broken hearts scattered across the islands, surf instructor Colby Taylor, aka Breaker, is running full speed away from her selfish actions years earlier. Hiding in the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean, the last thing she expects to encounter is Elizabeth Collins, a stuffy, judgmental college professor forced down her own escape path. Elizabeth is uncharacteristically drawn to the mysterious surfer but can't picture herself having a vacation fling, or any other relationship with the enigamatic Breaker.Set in the backdrop of Maui, one of Hawaii's most beautiful islands, both women must overcome their doubts and apprehensions to discover the true beauty of life—each other.

- This book is more than I expected. I'm not sure why I keep going into Matinee Romances books expecting certain things that align more with things I dislike. But for one book I gave 1 star to, in this line, most books that bear the brand 'Matinee Romances' on their cover have been books I've given high ratings to. Weird, that. And what is 'Matinee Romances'? I really have no idea. I assume it is some kind of 'imprint' of Bold Strokes Books, but don't imprints get the 'glory' of being listed as the publisher? Sort of a 'Matinee Romances, a division of Bold Strokes Books'. But these books are all listed as published by Bold Strokes Books. Which has, over the years, had several unexplained odd things on their covers, like the 'Matinee Romances' wording, the V for 'Victory', a random stylized e, and other unexplained markings.
- This book has some rather nice imagery buried among the pages. Like when the two lead characters first meet (and yes, both have their own POV's expressed), when 'the Surfer' feels like she is being watched, and gazes towards the beach, while 'The Watcher' gazes out at the surfers, eyes returning again and again to one specific surfer. Neither knowing that they are gazing upon women. But feeling a strong desire to gaze in those two directions (well, one direction per person).
The Watcher moves closer and rests near, but not too close to the water, remaining dry. The Surfer moves closer, then erupts from the sea, and moves forward, as if lured, pulling the Watcher into a passionate kiss . . . one thing leads to another and the two are further back, somewhat hidden among the trees. Tops are removed, extreme desire to explore and lick breasts is displayed. The Watcher sinks to the sand, the Surfer kissing, until the watcher becomes the watched, when she notices three teenage boys standing nearby watching. She makes a noise, the surfer reacts, and seems to come out of a kind of trance and transforms into something other than 'the surfer', she pulls the watcher with her to her truck. Puts her stuff away, then departs . . . leaving the watcher behind. Though that makes things seem bad, yes, appearing to be leaving the watcher to the gaze of the three boys. Leaving out, I am, the part in between when the surfer aggressively gets the boys to leave.
This sounds like fanfiction. The Watcher, the Surfer. The book really isn't like that, I just got carried away. Though the watcher, Elizabeth, does think of the other as 'the surfer' until she can get a name to go along with the woman.
- I'm not sure what age I expected the two women to inhabit. Probably something close to their 20s, maybe late twenties. No real reason, 'professor' in the book description probably should have clued me in. I guess I got fixated on a somewhat vague beach-bum 'surf instructor' vibe. That or the fact the last book I read with this kind of set-up, through Matinee Romances, did involve 20 year-olds (thinking here of Sex and Skateboards, or whatever that book's title was). But no, the woman with the hidden past, the surf instructor, is either 37 or 38. While the professor on vacation, is the other (or, slightly less vaguely, one is 37, other is 38, I just forget which is which).
- Graphic sex? Oh my yes. Instant sex? Well, as the above notes, they do get to 'playing' without even learning the others name, or, for that matter, talking - on the other hand they also break off before things moved beyond 'second base'. Whereupon things kind of moved into a slow burn kind of mode (another unexpected development). But don't worry, a lot of arousing exciting time was had - some of it just in the way surfing is taught; some of it multiple orgasmic fun over 3 to 6 plus hours.
- The book was deeper than I expected.
- It is likely I would have made this a 5+ read (which doesn't really matter, it'd just show up as 5 stars on GoodReads), but for certain things here or there I'd liked to have seen (like longer ending). No words accurately convey what I mean.
Another rote lesbian romance novel featuring two impossibly attractive women, described constantly as "hot" or beautiful, yet lacking in certain attractive qualities (two scenes in particular I can think of where at least one of them quietly mocked/looked down upon the less than hot/beautiful. For me this was all very been there, done that. The setting may have been the best part, yet it's a completely missed opportunity as nothing was really even described other than the beach and hotel. It's Hawaii for god's sake! Laughably unrealistic sex scenes galore, but if you're not interested in the slightest in the characters these scenes become tedious and ultimately skippable. There are much better lesbian romance novels out there and little reason to subject yourself to this.
could have been four stars BUT the ending was waaaay to abrupt...i mean after all that, all i know is: 1.)a month has past, 2.)breaker has caught a plane & 3.)Elizabeth greets her with a smile!!! really? shhesh! i'm in denial...all of my book didn't print-that's what i'm telling myself.
Finished this one this morning. Man great book it took a lot for both women to except one another even after the past Colby believed would not ever be able to find someone who made her feel comfortable till Elizabeth showed up. I love the understanding they both had but after the truth cam out it was Colby who had to take those steps. It was a great book well told but the ending well it could have gone a little further ended a little better but in all amazing book.
The book was great. Ending sucked . Why do you writers like to chop off endings like u do. Cant by us show the happiness after they get back together. It would have been a five if not for the ending.
Elizabeth, a College president, goes to Maui to write and relax for ten weeks. Drawn by and attracted to Colby the surfing instructor. Beautiful dates......helicopter ride, sailing, surfing lessons. Makes for a good romance. The characters are surprisingly deep and the tension sizzling. But once you find out the big mystery from Colby's past there is a huge let down and then slam bam the book ends abruptly. I was going to be five stars until the end when I looked at my book wondering where the next few chapters were.
Was a good fast paced novel. A lot of reviews said not believable pace of romance, but while it was fast paced it was reasonable. A nice wee story with some reasonable saucy scenes and surprisingly deep characters
One overworked and stuffy college dean meets a surfer with a past in the beautiful island of Maui, what else could happen but sex and surfing?
Julie Cannon brings it all in Breaker's Passion, she gives us lust, mystery, pasts to get through, and of course the beautiful island of Maui. Elizabeth is a college dean visiting from the cold Northeast to finish writing her book for a month in the islands and is not looking for love or even lust as her track record has shown her just does not have the aptitude for it. Enter good looking Colby aka "Breaker" and Elizabeth's libido tells her a different story. Cannon lets the relationship develop instead of just having the characters jump into bed, which lays a nice foundation for the relationship and the sex to come. Each character has past with depth and a present that is fully fleshed out. There are no shortcuts taken here and you will not feel left wanting. The sex is easy and fun (though I can always use more, but then that is my reader preference). The romance is leaves you wishing that you too could be traveling through Maui and falling in love or maybe even a little lust if it is with Colby.
When Elizabeth takes a 10 week vacation from her stressful job as a College Principle and her life as a buttoned up and repressed History professor, all she has planned is a schedule of research for her first foray into writing literature.
She doesn’t expect to fall into the thrall of the incredibly attractive Breaker (as in heart-breaker) within 24 hours of arriving on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii.
But as well as being drop dead gorgeous, fun, interesting and sexy as hell, Breaker, aka Colby, has a huge secret which has kept her locked in a terrible past for three years, cut off from friends, family and living her life.
Can the two women move beyond a holiday fling to find a way out of their sterile lives?

Julie Cannon always produces great story lines and interesting and engaging characters. She specializes in stories where emotional baggage prevents the obvious romance developing. Many other LesFic authors use the same mechanisms, but Ms Cannons ‘baggage’ tends to be deeper, heavier and fuller than most. To quote Breaker: “She was a mess, carrying enough emotional baggage to fill an oil tanker”.
As always her plots are well paced, her characters believable and the facts, narrative and sex scenes feel realistic and something we can relate to.
Well, not one of the best, but still a very enjoyable read with a classical scenario: one looses a lover and is afraid of falling in love with anybody and actually just open to people; the second an careerist who never has time for anyone.
It’s quite a short read, only for a few hours, very easy, pages just kept turning by themselves. The whole story is set into a very friendly Hawaiian setting and wonderfully detailed same as the characters, which I really liked. There isn’t much to not to like about them anyway. Situations realistically described I’d say. But what I didn’t like that much was the ending. It looks unfinished, lets the reader only dissatisfied. I certainly was awaiting some final dialog between them, about what they felt and what will be now.
Despite the ending, I’d still say it’s a pretty good read nevertheless. I really enjoyed it and that’s how it should be, enjoy.
I'm not sure what made this story so special. The romance? The setting in beautiful Maui? Both? Perhaps all of the above. The two characters Colby and Elizabeth were so compelling in their attraction for each other. This was a well written story. Well done!
I quite enjoy lesbian pulp, when it's good - well written with a nice plot. This book doesn't have either. Not really worth your time, there's so many better books available in this genre.
