Ich begreife nicht einen einzigen Charakter. Eine nerviger als der andere. Lese die Reihe eigentlich auch nur noch um sie beendet zu haben und vom SuB zu befreien. 🙄

Sumi manages to give Kazuya some actual good advice about Mizuhara’s birthday and he doesn’t make a total mess of it. Then our leads end up at a drinking party, which goes not precisely how you might expect. And finally, the irresistible force that is Mami may have met her match in the immovable (and thirsty) wall that is Ruka.

It’s amazing that when this story isn’t trying to be a comedy (a bridge way, way too far for this series), it can actually be decent. In fact, I think I would go as far as to say that this volume convinced me that this is working nominally as a harem book but is constantly being dragged down by its lead.

Kazuya is so remarkably immature that it kind of sabotages those times when he does the right thing. We’ve had many high school leads who were more put together than this - I realize that not everybody can be a confident dynamo, but he’s so useless most of the time. It isn’t so much that he’s like this, but more that he hasn’t gotten that much better after nine full volumes.

And his friends suck too, being the kind of insensitive buttnostrils that women tell their friends about having awful dates with. This series is absolutely obsessed with making sure it gets its masturbation jokes in there and I’d love to know who is finding those funny.

Which is all to say that divested of that (and the girls are the stars of the show, which I get is the point, but you can’t have a lead who you want to see hit by a bus [not in this genre anyway]), well, this volume is perilously close to being rather good.

The whole birthday segment is a testament to Mizuhara’s work ethic as well as Kazuya taking solid counsel from Sumi (who is incredibly skilled at torturing herself) that leads to an honest-to-god sweet moment that I didn’t think this story had in it. Kazuya’s waffling afterward detracts from it a bit, but in the moment I dare say it works.

Then comes the horrible mixer event where Kazuya and Mizuhara stumble upon one another but Mizuhara is in her regular identity so they have to pretend to not know one another and blah blah blah. It’s not so enjoyable.

Honestly, this fairly accurately encapsulates many hardcore drinking events I’ve attended, in that it feels like an excruciating hell I may never escape from. And it just keeps going and going.

To my chagrin, this veers off the expected outcome in a way that nearly makes it worth putting up with, as I assumed we were about to see Mizuhara get plastered and Kazuya to the rescue. Things would be said, truths revealed, usual nonsense.

Instead, well, there’s a lot more barf involved, but Kazuya saves the day in a different way, at great personal cost, that leads to a fairly nice little denouement. Again, it’s amazing what you can do with a little effort, even with the guys being there.

The last section involves the return of Mami, who seems to have nothing better to do than hover around her ex. This time it’s at his workplace where Ruka also happens to be employed. This part of the story is absolutely great because it finally has a character who sees right through Mami and has no problem calling out what she’s been up to.

Ruka just puts Mami right in her place and it is glorious - Ruka knows she is a constant second place to Mizuhara but she will be damned it she’ll let this pain in the ass move her into third. She also happens to be the only honest and straightforward person in the whole series so I think that counts for a lot with me.

It sure leaves things in an interesting place. It’s not that I mind a series like this, but I would be lying if I saw the point of a harem series where the outcome is never in doubt. At least We Never Learn! gave everybody an ending and Quintessential Quintuplets fashioned it into what turned out to be a rather good mystery.

Here it’s just… enjoy this underwhelming guy attracting hot girls until he and Mizuhara have some real talk and get together. Although I will say that despite my protestations, I did have one good laugh in this book when Kazuya slides down his front steps in a drunken stupor, so it’s not impossible for this title to be funny.

3 stars, precariously close to 3.5 thanks to some actual interesting things going on, but I won’t pretend that this series has a hope in hell of getting 4 stars out of me unless something cataclysmically different happens.

The MC still irks me at times, but he’s so smitten with the LI and it’s adorable. I want to see them end up together!

Kind of drags a bit.

Basically opens to having Kazuya try to convince Mizuhara nothing happened between him and Ruka after she slept over. So then eventually Kazuya goes out with friends and lo and behold meets Mizuhara by mistake, but she is in her normal clothes, not rent a girlfriend. This part is okay but kind of boring till the end. Second part has Ruka finally stand up for herself and easily the best part. I'm like Ruka more and more, and Kazuya is a fucking punk ass bitch at this point.

A 3 out of 5.

Five stars for Ruka totally roasting Mami. I fucking hate Mami so much and watching Ruka tear her to fucking pieces was so satisfying.

I also liked the mixer chapters, those were pretty fun and the art really shone with how goofy and chaotic it got.

Oh, and Sumi-san was fucking adorable and I love her.

That's it, loved this volume, more savage Ruka and adorable Sumi, please!

Things just keep getting crazier for Kazuya.

He gets talked into a mixer, and who else is there? Chizuru! In her "college nerd" persona! Several times she almost gets outed, but Kazuya keeps putting heat on himself, to keep Chizuru out of the spotlight. The group decide to play a drinking game, and it's obvious to Kazuya that Chizuru can't hold much booze, after all, it's her 20th birthday! So, Kazuya keeps purposely screwing up in the game, so he ends up getting so drunk that he collapses a few blocks from the bar. Chizuru, fearing this, followed Kazuya and helped him get home. They have a talk, and he repeatedly says he adores her & will do anything to protect her school identity from tarnish. She sits with him as he pukes his guts out, and rubs his back, telling him she appreciates his efforts, but he doesn't have to "act cool" in front of her, regardless of her persona at the time. Later, Mami "just happens" to come into Kazuya's workplace, and Ruka demands to know how they know each other. Eventually, Mami draws Kazuya into the room she's using to study and questions him about both Chizuru, and also Ruka. Ruka just happens to be listening at the door, and screams at Mami that she's Kazuya's girlfriend. Mami brings up the rental thing, so Ruka, a former rental girlfriend herself, doubles down and says she's aware of Kazuya's (apparent) relationship with Chizuru. Ruka tells Mami off, and shouts she loves Kazuya and demands Mami stay away from Kazuya!

This volume didn't stress me out as much but, it wasn't not stressful haha.
First of all Sumi is so adorable! I just can't handle her! She must be protected at all costs!
I'm still really enjoying Kazuyas character development and it's been nice watching him mature and start caring about other things.
The gift for Chizuru was so cute and weird but also really thoughtful! They are just so cute! I love watching them interact now... though sometimes they give me secondhand embarrassment lol.
But! I need to talk about how Kazuya kept losing the drinking game so that Chizuru didn't have to drink as much! So sweet!
And then Chizuru taking care of him after! I just can't! Ahhhh!
All that being said... I am getting more and more annoyed with not only Mami but also Ruka! That girl is really unhinged and I'm trying to understand her but some of the things she is doing is a bit much!
Though I did enjoy her yelling at Mami haha but again super unhinged!
Now onto volume 10!

It's always lovely to come across other people in these kinds of situations. I think the author will continue like this indefinitely, which is great! The drawings are beautiful, and even the grimaces are rendered really well. Ruka was so great at defending her relationship. The author's afterword on human feelings when people relate themselves to others and feel envy and jealousy without appreciating who they really are and what they already have was really interesting.

I caught myself trying to fast forward during this volume. Only getting reactions in small places. But I bet that it is important for the series to have some "mild" volumes. Just to recharge.

Looking forward to the tenth.

Look, Rent-A-Girlfriend has become such a mess and when Mami keeps sticking her nose into things and that NITWIT Ruka forcing herself into someone else's life where she's very obviously not wanted.... Frankly, the series has gone downhill.

This book still gets 4-stars for Kazuya's attempts to save Ichinose at the drinking party they both ended up at.

A pretty good volume. It was nice to see all the characters get some meaningful moments in this one. That cliffhanger will be the impetus for picking up volume 10 day one.
