Music from the busy dance floor echoes into the deserted room where the Prom Queen lies deadly still. A tiara rests on her soft blonde curls, but her face is frozen with fear, and her painted red lips are forever sealed shut in a silenced scream…
When Detective Amanda Steele’s niece, Ava, begs her to look for a missing schoolfriend, she immediately agrees to take on the case. Eighteen-year-old Reece left home three nights ago after fighting with her mother and hasn’t been seen since. But when the teenager’s body is discovered brutally murdered, poised dramatically at the prom venue, Amanda is devastated she didn’t save the girl in time.
Haunted by the scene, Amanda dives headfirst into the case. Chasing every lead, she is horrified when she discovers a potential key witness strangled in her own home. It soon becomes clear that the killer will stop at nothing to silence anyone who might reveal their identity. So when Ava mentions she saw someone acting strangely at the prom venue that night, Amanda’s heart stops.
And when Amanda’s worst nightmare comes true, and her beloved niece is taken, she knows that every second counts to uncover this twisted killer’s identity and bring Ava home safely. But can she crack the secrets of this killer’s deadly game before it’s too late?
CAROLYN ARNOLD is an international bestselling and award-winning author, as well as a speaker, teacher, and inspirational mentor. She has several continuing fiction series and has nearly thirty published books. Her genre diversity offers her readers everything from cozy to hard-boiled mysteries, and thrillers to action adventures. Her crime fiction series have been praised by those in law enforcement as being accurate and entertaining. This led to her adopting the trademark: POLICE PROCEDURALS RESPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT™.
Carolyn was born in a small town and enjoys spending time outdoors, but she also loves the lights of a big city. Grounded by her roots and lifted by her dreams, her overactive imagination insists that she tell her stories. Her intention is to touch the hearts of millions with her books, to entertain, inspire, and empower.
She currently lives near London, Ontario, Canada with her husband and two beagles.
A killer, a missing teenager, and a prom may be common elements of many stories. However, the way Carolyn Arnold weaves them into the Taken Girls is not routine. This gripping police procedural and crime thriller is the eighth book in the series and it packs a punch. The setting largely takes place in Prince William County in northern Virginia and features Detective Amanda Steele. Amanda, a seasoned detective, is partnered with Detective Trent Stenson.
Even though Amanda and Trent are homicide detectives, they start looking for a missing teen, Reese Thompson, the older sister of a friend of Amanda’s niece, Ava Rollins. Reese left home three nights ago after an argument with her mother. She was voted prom queen so everyone is still expecting her to show up for the prom. She does show up, but not as expected. Meanwhile Amanda and Trent are chasing down leads, but nothing is straightforward and everyone seems to be hiding something.
Amanda continues to balance work and family. Amanda’s flaws and struggles made her seem realistic. She shows growth and depth as the story progresses, but seems a little too quick to disregard some of Trent’s suggestions. It was great to have Sergeant Malone, their boss, back on the job. Trent is loyal, funny, and always has Amanda’s back. Readers learn more about Amanda’s relationship with her sister Kristen and niece Ava in this story.
The author brings suspense, action, and intense moments to the novel. The story builds suspense in a way that pulls readers into the lives of the characters. As usual, Arnold starts with an outstanding prologue that is chilling and grabs readers’ attention. The plot is intriguing, full of chasing down leads and interviewing suspects and witnesses in anticipation of identifying the killer. However, there are also threads of her personal life, scenes with the killer, and scenes with Ava that keep readers turning the pages.
This fast-paced novel is full of angst and a sense of urgency as well as some action scenes. The antagonist’s thought processes have a terrifying realism. The plot twists and surprises will keep readers on their toes. The author weaves murder, relationships, family dynamics, grief, bullying, embarrassment, friendship, and more into a finely crafted tale.
Overall, this novel was riveting, thought-provoking, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Amanda and Trent. I recommend this series to those that like police procedurals and crime thrillers with relatable and likeable main characters.
Bookouture and Carolyn Arnold provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently expected to be June 20, 2023. Detective Amanda Steele and her partner Trent investigate the murder of prom queen Reese. Her niece Ava does a little investigating on her own and lands herself into a heap of trouble. This is the 8th book in the series and can easily be read as a standalone. The book had some great twists and was hard to put down. I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released June 20, 2023!
This is the eighth in the Detective Amanda Steele series, one of my favorites. Although I have read quite a few of them, this would work as a standalone.
When her best friend’s older sister, Reese, goes missing, Ava contacts her aunt, Prince William County (Virginia) Detective Amanda Steele. Amanda drops everything to investigate and interrupts her partner, Trent’s, weekend for his assistance. It is the night of Reese’s prom and she was supposed to reign over it as Prom Queen. When her murdered body is discovered at the country club prom venue, the race is on to find the killer. Ava, who just can’t resist doing some of her own sleuthing, soon becomes a target for the killer. There are quite a few potential suspects, from the person Reese beat out for prom queen, to a questionable substitute teacher, to the staff at the country club….or could it be an unknown, someone Amanda and Trent haven’t yet considered?
Yet another of Arnold’s fast paced, engrossing police procedurals, I read it in one day, long into the night, because I could not put it down. Arnold knows how to capture and maintain her readers’ interest. I love the repeating characters, especially Amanda who, despite an earlier tragedy in her life, is a strong, capable, independent female and I enjoy the camaraderie between her and Trent.
Without going into the reason, because it would reveal a spoiler, the victimology and characters in this story gave me a lot to think about; it is still in my head. We have just too many mean girls, boys, and adults in this world.
Taken Girls (Detective Amanda Steele Book 8) By Carolyn Arnold Pub Date: 20 Jun 2023 Bookouture General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers Rating: 5/5
Taken Girls, the eighth installment in Carolyn Arnold's Amanda Steel series, is an excellent read. The characters were engaging and the plot was intriguing. The writing was fluid and the twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat.
Synopsis: Upon her niece Ava's call for help, detective Amanda Steele travels to a park. She discovers that Ava's best friend's sister (18-year-old Reese) is missing. Amanda and her partner Trent investigate what appears to be a typical teenage runaway, but it soon escalates into a brutal murder investigation. Meanwhile, Amanda's young niece Ava conducts her own investigation and draws the killer's attention. With Ava's involvement, the stakes are higher than ever before as Amanda and Trent struggle to find the killer before he strikes again. Can they stop him in time, or will the killer outwit them and take more innocent lives?
NetGalley and Bookouture were kind enough to share this gripping thriller with me. Taken Girls is definitely a barn burner of a book! I highly recommend it!
QOTD: Does the cover of a book influence your decision to read it? What is a book/books that you will never forget?
Taken Girls by Carolyn Arnold is about a prom gone wrong…and it’s all down hill from there.
Detective Amanda Steel works for the Homicide Unit of the Prince William County Police Department. She stays busy with work, but I’m not sure how she would cope if she wasn’t. Sure she loves spending time with her adopted daughter, Zoe, and her significant other, Logan, but she is not one for being idle.
A call for help from her niece Ava, draws Amanda into a missing person’s case. Though it is outside her normal purview, it is the sister, Reese, of Ava’s best friend, Nadine, so she can’t say no. The shit really hits the fan when her niece, Ava, has been taken by the same man who took Reese. I saw it coming, because Ava is too smart for her own britches. She couldn’t stop investigating on her own, but she already had a target on her back.
There was one bump in the road at about 70%. I don’t see Carolyn Arnold letting that slip by and it really bugged me. Other than that, it was another intriguing mystery that kept me entertained for hours. I am looking forward to the next Detective Amanda Steele. novel.
Taken Girls is the 8th Detective Amanda Steele book and it brings the crime a bit too close to home for Amanda's liking. She is enjoying time at home when she gets a call from her niece, Ava. Ava's BFF's sister is missing and they want Amanda to help. Amanda heads to see her niece, hoping things will work out and Reese will come home. That night, Reese shows up at the prom, dead. She is dressed in an old prom dress and tiara and placed on her throne, in the washroom. Amanda and her partner, Trent Stenson are on the case. The problem is that Ava is a want to be cop, and she does her own snooping around, but this puts her in the killer's path. Can Amanda and Trent find the murderer before another girl ends up dead.
This is one of my favourite Police Procedural/Crime Thriller series. They grab you from the first page, where the crime is committed and keep you hooked until the end. This is a fast paced story, that kept me guessing throughout. Amanda is well respected by those she works with, including her Sargent. The way she and Trent put the pieces together, and use their intuition to solve the cases works so well, that they get my heart racing as the chase is on. With someone Amanda loves in danger, I watched her get a bit reckless, but fortunately, Trent is there to keep her in check. The final twists as the culprit is revealed answered a few of my questions I had while reading, yet still surprised me. Another great addition to this series that I recommend.
Being prom queen isn’t all is cracked up to be, especially when she arrives in a very unusual fashion. I always marvel at the horridness of the crimes committed, but I keep coming back for more. I thought the burgeoning character of Ava was taking off. I thought Kristen ached absurd for most of the book. But what really bugged me was Clarissa’s nonchalant attitude about her missing daughter. It was like la de da, not worried. The sleuthing was good and gory. Amanda makes a major decision at the end….. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
These books in this series just keep getting better and better. This one has a twist I promise you won't see coming. It's really hard to put this book down at any time even knowing you will pick it back up shortly! It does not disappoint.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Taken Girls, book eight in the Detective Amanda Steele series, return readers to the Prince William County where Detective Amanda Steele and her partner, Trent, faces yet another challenging case. A case which will shake her world and pit her in a race against time to stop a psychotic killer. Going into this book, I expected a riveting page turner. Arnold did not disappoint.
Detective Steele attempts to make use of her rare day off. However, as someone who loves her work and can’t wait to sink her teeth into a homicide investigation, she is restless. So when her niece calls her about a possible missing person, she drops everything and went running. Although missing persons is not in her job description, she along with her partner investigates. Soon, what began as a search for a missing person became a homicide investigation.
This case hits quite close to home for Amanda. It has also stirred up some painful memories. However, being the strong woman she is, she pushed through. Amanda continues to grow and in this installment we see her taking a second chance on love. Although I am happy she’s ready to move on in the relationship department, I am not too keen on the person she is with. They have absolutely no chemistry together. She continues to juggle being a single mother with her job. It’s hard, but she manages given the demands of her job.
Like all the books prior to this installment, Taken Girls takes readers on a journey filled with mystery and nail biting suspense. The prologue which sets the tone for the story, provide chilling details of the killer’s activities. It was interesting seeing things from the killer’s perspective. Not only do readers learn the reason for the murders, we also see his arrogance and entitlement, which were revealed through his terrifying thought processes.
Plot twists and shocking revelations made for a fast-paced read. I read this one day, that’s how good it was. In this installment, Arnold touches on bullying and its impact on the victim. Once again Arnold takes her fans on a journey filled with mystery, suspense and shocking moments. She has proven the reason she deserves to be dubbed the mistress of police procedurals. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
Detective Amanda Steel is back enjoying some well earned free time. Whilst her daughter Zoe has her first, ever sleep over.
But unfortunately for Amanda the free time doesn't last. When her niece Ava calls upset and begging for help. As her best friend Nadine's older sister Reese is missing and the pair have just discovered her phone abandoned in the Potomac River.
So, Amanda sets out to find Ava and Nadine and promises them she'll search for Reese. Who is due to attend her prom as prom queen that evening.
But just as Amanda starts looking for answers. So do Nadine and Ava. Who sneak in to the prom hoping that Reese will turn up. And she does, just not how they expected.
And so Amanda is caught between caring for her niece, a distraught sister begging for answers and solving a murder and things only get worse.
As Amanda and her partner Trent start their investigation. They learn disturbing truths about Reese and the day she disappeared and find another victim.
However, what they don't realise is that Ava is still investigating, and the killer has set their sights firmly on her.
But will Amanda and Trent realise this before it's too late? Or will the killer strike again?
And with great pacing, plenty of twists and turns and a thrilling confrontation. Taken Girls was a cracking addition to the series, and it's a story I would happily recommend to all.
My thanks to Bookouture for the opportunity to read and early copy of Taken Girls. 😊
When this beauty landed in my TBR pile I honestly couldnt believe that this is now book #8 in the series! Which is a massive positive in my eyes because it means the series just keeps giving more and more!
Detective Amanda Steele receives an anguished phone call from her niece Ava. Her best friends sister, Reece, is missing and she needs her help finding her. Amanda doesn't work for the Missing Persons department but heads off go meet her niece who herself is a bit of a sleuth to find out what details she can pass over.
Reece has been voted prom queen and prom is tonight so she should be at home getting ready but noone has any idea where she can be.
Some things aren't sitting right with Detective Steele so after passing it by her boss she takes the case on, not expecting her mutilated posed body to turn up in the ladies toilets on prom night!
Steele and her partner Trent are left with the hard task of finding out just what happened to Reece and why. Questions are asked but it soon becomes apparent that there are many suspects but no leads... yet.
When her niece is then targeted by the killer it becomes even more prevalent that they find out just who they are and quickly.
Can she find the killer before she becomes a victim herself?
A fast paced, action packed, twisty story that was fraught with tension from start to finish.
Huge thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
This is the eighth book in the Detective Amanda Steele series. I started in the middle of this series and had no problems getting to know the characters, so I think this book works well as a standalone. Amanda's niece is worried about a friend's older sister who is missing. Amanda and her work partner, Trent Stenson, begin looking into the disappearance, but discover the teenager has been murdered. Amanda is determined to solve this difficult case. She gets help from her fourteen-year-old niece Ava, whether she wants it or not. I enjoyed her involvement at first when she stuck to passing along information to Amanda that would help the case. However, I didn't like that as the book progressed, she went off on her own investigation and trying to find clues. I wish there had been more Trent and less Ava!
The book shows the extremes some people may go to after being bullied and the story is sometimes hard to read. I like the tension and suspense of the story, but not the more graphic descriptions of the crimes. I powered through those scenes since I do like the main characters and the mystery was intriguing. There are some developments in Amanda's personal life that I have mixed feelings about, but I may be in the minority. The book is great for new readers, but those following the series will be especially interested in what happens at the end.
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Bookouture, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
a prom queen is dead... she had been missing for a couple of days since her argument with her mother but nobody expected her to show up at her prom sitting on her throne dead
detective amanda steele is called to the scene not really knowing what to expect but horrified at the scene one for how this poor girl was displayed and another that her niece was there as well...her niece that shouldnt even be there
amanda follows all the leads that she can but its not until her niece disappears that things start to unravel but will she be able to find her niece before she becomes a victim of this murder
a slow build up but man when it starts going you cant put this book down... and it was lovely to catch up with these characters again
When Detective Amanda Steele’s niece, Ava, begs her to look for schoolgirls missing sister, she immediately agrees to take on the case. Eighteen-year-old Reese left home three nights ago after fighting with her mother and hasn’t been seen since. But when the teenager’s body is discovered brutally murdered, poised dramatically at the prom venue, Amanda is devastated she didn’t save the girl in time.
Can Amanda find who did this before any more girls go missing?
I'm usually a fan of this series but unfortunately this one was just too predictable for me. It was still a great read but it just didn't book me like they normally do.
This is book#8 in the Detective Amanda Steele series. It was a good read! I would definitely recommend.
Detective Amanda Steele receives a frantic call from her niece, Ava. Reese, the sister of her best friend, is missing and they need her help locating her. Reese was to be the prom queen and was excited about it so why would she have run away? Amanda assists the girls in searching for Reece but isn’t able to locate her.
When a body is found at the prom, Amanda and her team are called in to investigate. Sadly, they find that it belongs to Reese. Why would someone have killed her?
Amanda is determined to find out what happened to Reese. She soon discovers that there are a lot of suspects in the case. Apparently Reese had a tendency to be a bully. She’s wanders if that got her killed.
When Amanda’s niece is targeted by the killer, the urgency to solve a case is even more prevalent. Especially after Ava goes missing, Amanda is frantically trying to figure out the killers identity before she becomes a victim as well. Can she stop them in time?
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book was fast-paced and had a lot of potential, but the plot and suspense were severely weakened by the fact that we got the killer’s POV—nothing was really a surprise anymore—along with the killer’s identity.
This was the first book I had read in the series so maybe that's why I couldn't really get in to it but I struggled to care about the characters, I found the writing style quite clichéd and I just wanted to get it finished. It wasn't a thrilling enough thriller for me and after reading a few Lisa Jewell books it was no where near as interesting and complex.
THIS BOOK REMINDED ME HOW GRATEFUL I AM THAT I NEVER HAD TO DEAL WITH A BRATTY TEENAGER. I AM EXTREMELY THANKFUL MY CHILDREN WERE NEVER LIKE THAT. IF I HAD A HARDHEADED TEENAGER LIKE THAT, I WOULD JUST BE GETTING OUT OF JAIL NOW. THEY'RE TERRIBLE AND NOT BELIVABLE AT TIMES. IT WAS A LITTLE SLOW & BORING. ;<
Full disclosure - I was provided an advanced reader’s copy of this book by the author or their representative but have voluntarily provided a review. All opinions are my own.
Old wounds open in deadly retribution
The venue is decorated, and the students are dressed to the nines as they file into the Rolling Hills Country Club, but this anticipated event will not go as planned. The festivities have come to a halt before they can even start at the discovery of a murder. Dressed in a prom dress complete with tiara, the young female is found staged in a bathroom stall. Detectives Steele and Stenson are quick to the scene, but the discovery of the victim, while shocking, is not completely unexpected. After having recently been approached by her niece Ava and her best friend Nadine, Amanda suspects that the body may belong to Nadine’s sister who has been missing for almost three days. The duo work quickly to narrow down a list of suspects who would want to harm Reece. The closeness of the case has Ava playing amateur sleuth also, as she is driven by a need to help her friend. As they investigate it becomes apparent that Reece may have been a “mean girl” with a good cover as they encounter several people who had cause to dislike her, but to kill her? Something’s not adding up especially with justifying how a teenager could possibly have performed the brutal murder and staging. Just when the detectives get a major break in the case Amanda learns that Ava is missing. With the stakes higher than ever and the case becoming personal Amanda must track down the location of her niece before she becomes the next victim.
Taken Girls is the eighth in the Detective Amanda Steele series of books by international Best Selling Author Carolyn Arnold. Taking place sometime after Her Dark Grave Amanda is happy for the return of her former sergeant from medical leave. As a second father figure and longtime family friend Sergeant Malone is a welcome return to the force and has allowed the previous sergeant to explore a more relaxing life outside of police work. Amanda also finally appears ready to lay the ghosts of her late husband and daughter to rest and is mulling over a more permanent relationship with Logan. When Ava calls and asks to meet her at a local park, and she hears her concerns regarding the missing teen Amanda is compelled to help, and once the action starts Taken Girls becomes a real breakneck page turner. Overall, the time frame for the entire story encompasses a little under 4 days, but there is not a wasted second as the detectives follow every lead to locate their culprit. With this installment the topic of bullying and its potentially long-lasting scars are a major theme. I would wager that this is a topic that many people have dealt with and in fact the author shares a personal experience of her own in her final message to her readers. I know certain characters and situations struck a chord with me, and to say that there was sympathy if not a small bit of understanding toward the killer would not be an inaccurate statement. This is definitely a story that will stay with me for a while.
If you are looking for a suspenseful page turner with a twist that you will never see coming, Taken Girls will be an excellent choice for you. And if you are concerned with this being part of a larger series, Arnold tends to structure many if not all of her series books in such a way that they can be read as a stand alone without missing any of the main character points.
This was a twisty, jet-fueled thriller that explodes from page one. The scene is macabre and brutal as we view the scene through the eyes of a disturbed killer. This is another winner for Carolyn Arnold in this wildly popular series, but it is not good for those with a weak stomach. This killer is vicious in their quest for their own brand of justice. Someone was not treated well in high school, and they have misplaced revenge on their plate.
This one gets a little personal for Detective Amanda Steele when her niece, Ava, asks for her help to find her friend's missing sister, Reece. Reece disappeared three days ago after a horrid fight with her mother and has not been seen since. Amanda is disturbed when she finds that Reece's mother has not even reported her missing. Her mother believes she has just run away. She basically calls her daughter a drama queen. However, Amanda sees that things are not adding up. First, they find her phone dumped in the water, and everyone knows a teenager will not go anywhere without their phone. Secondly, Reece was ready to take the throne as the prom queen, and that is all she had talked about for weeks. Now she is just going to skip out on her moment of glory? I do not think so. She will end up at her prom on a throne with a crown, but not the kind she dreamed of sitting on. When Reece's body is found posed in a vile fashion at her prom, they know that this is the work of a very disturbed individual with a lot of hate spewing out in their actions.
The case rockets forward after that discovery, and the team knows they are on the clock to find justice for Reece. If you enjoy a good police procedural, you will not find a better author to read. Amanda Steele is one of my favorite fictional characters. She has suffered a great loss in her life, but she keeps living and serving the citizens of Prince William County by seeking justice for those who deserve it. Her niece, Ava, played a larger part in this story. This girl is a handful, but she will make a great detective one day. Blue runs in this family's veins. There are always plenty of suspects to choose from and red herrings scattered throughout the story. Just when you think you have it figured out, another twist comes out of nowhere.
I know when I pick up a Carolyn Arnold book that I will not be satisfied until I close the book, so just know that you will happily abandon, work, sleep and life as you race to the end of this mystery and close the book and pick your jaw up off the floor.
Thank you to Bookouture for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Taken Girls by Carolyn Arnold is the 8th book in her terrific Detective Amanda Steele series. I am a big fan of Arnold, having read most of her books, and I love this series, which continues with another great addition. Taken Girls was fantastic, with me unable to put the book down.
Amanda Steele, our heroine, is a homicide detective in Dumfries, Virginia Police Department. Amanda’s niece, asks her to locate her best friend’s sister, who has been missing for 3 days. Though Amanda is a homicide detective, she agrees to look into this. Eighteen-year-old Reece left home three nights ago after having a fight with her mother and hasn’t been seen since. Reece is the prom queen for the upcoming prom, leaving people stumped why she would runaway before the prom; her body is discovered at the venue, brutally murdered; with a tiara on her head, dressed in a gown, and her lips silenced. Amanda takes control of the case, now that it is a homicide.
Steele and Trent (her partner) investigate a murder which is close to home, becomes and a race against time to find the murderer before they kill again. Amanda’s niece, Ava, wants to become like her aunt, and decides to do her own investigation; which in time will lead the killer to target her. When Ava goes missing, Amanda is urgently trying to identify the killer, as her and Trent are working without stop, as they are desperate to find the killer before Ava becomes a victim.
What follows is an exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, tense mystery, that kept me unable to put the book down, as this was a mind-blowing thriller. I always liked Amanda and Trent as they were great partners, though this case was very personal for Amanda. The last third of the book was fast-paced, intense, exciting thriller, with many twists along the way. To say too much more would be spoilers.
Taken Girls was another fantastic crime thriller that held our breath throughout. Amanda is a great heroine, and a fantastic detective. was so very well written by Carolyn Arnold, which is the norm for this author; as I am loving this series. If you like mystery thrillers, police procedural, then you need to be reading this series.
I am a big fan of Carolyn Arnold. I jumped for joy at being able to read Taken Girls (Detective Amanda Steele Book 8). I read this book in one day.
When Detective Amanda Steele’s niece, Ava, begs her to look for a missing school friend, she immediately agrees to take on the case. Eighteen-year-old Reese left home three nights ago after fighting with her mother and hasn’t been seen since. But when the teenager’s body is discovered brutally murdered, poised dramatically at the prom venue, Amanda is devastated she didn’t save the girl in time. It soon becomes clear that the killer will stop at nothing to silence anyone who might reveal their identity.
Amanda is still grappling with the death of her husband and young daughter in a tragic accident. She is coming to realize that they are gone and are never coming back, and she needs to move forward.
A great line about teenagers and communication and smartphones and how they have reverted back to the caveman days using emojis!
I like the way the author lays out the plot. There were some red herrings to keep me guessing and keep me involved in the story. I really enjoyed getting to know some of the series' regulars on a deeper level. Taken Girls does have a sad storyline and the aftermath of what happens when a murder takes place and the effects on the family left behind.
The story shows the effects of bullying and those that are left feeling betrayed, rejected, and misunderstood. It's quite a powerful message. One comment the author made was how bullying haunts those who are subjected to it and how it affects the trajectory of their lives. This is so true, and we never know how our interactions and words affect others. Bullying is a huge epidemic, and intolerance and fear of noting understanding those around us bring out hate.
The story characters have good camaraderie, especially Amanda and Trent. I enjoyed Amanda's head-strong niece and her featuring more in this book.
This is a great addition to the Amanda Steele series, and I cannot wait for more. I would recommend this book and this author. I would also suggest reading this series from the beginning.
Taken Girls is the eighth instalment in the Detective Amanda Steele series primarily set in Prince William County, Northern Virginia. Amanda and her police partner, Detective Trent Stenson, both of the Dumfries homicide department, are assigned to look into the case of Potomac High School Prom Queen, Reese Thompson, who three days earlier had vanished off the face of the earth. Reese is the sister of Amanda's niece's best friend, Nadine, so there is an extra incentive in attempting to find the missing eighteen-year-old even though she usually doesn't do missing-person cases. Reese had stormed out of the house late on Wednesday night after an argument that ended in her shouting that she didn't ever want to see her mother again, yet strangely, her mother hasn't bothered to report it as she assumes it was her daughter just being a "drama queen" again. Ava and Nadine have also found Reese's phone in a case encrusted with blue rhinestones spelling out her initials dumped in the river.
The prom is tonight, so why would someone so excited to attend that it was all she had talked about for weeks prior not respond to any calls about it? But Reese will get her prom moment after all, just not the type she or anyone else envisaged. Sadly, it wouldn't be anywhere close to as dignified as that. However, Ava's determination to find and punish those responsible for the crime could be putting her in more danger than she could ever know. This is a compelling and addictive police procedural from the get-go. Moving at a rapid-fire pace, the narrative has it all - endless suspense, nefarious characters, a recurring cast with depth, drama, grit, action galore and edge-of-your-seat twists and turns. The authentic depiction of police procedures was another aspect I loved, as often they are not true to real life as they seem to be here, and this adds to the vice-like grip it comes to have over you. Arnold is a writer you can always rely on to get your blood pumping and your cogs whirring.
Original review posted on my blog From Ink to Paper I have enjoyed reading the Detective Amanda Steele series by Carolyn Arnold, and I was not disappointed in this one. Even though we are on book 8 of the series it is still fun and you are still learning new things about Amanda as you go, which I enjoy. You are also getting to just feel like you are part of Amanda’s life and are on the ride along with her. This time you get to see more of her niece Ava and that was an interesting part of the story. It made me wonder if some day we might see a series with Ava as the lead, since she has detective blood running in her veins. I still enjoy the partnership that Trent and Amanda have with each other, even if I am a little sad they aren’t together because I always enjoy a partnership turned romance, but I am liking her more with Logan now and enjoying that the friendship with Trent is still there for her. You don’t see too much of the supporting characters in this one, you get little bits and pieces with her family here and there, but I like that this one was really focused on the case and solving it. I enjoyed seeing how Ava even as young as she is already has the making of a future detective, even if her involvement created some chaos. The writing was well done and the story moved along well and it kept you trying to figure out how it was going to play out. There was a surprise about the killer that I wasn’t expecting, and I liked. I thought it was very relevant to the times we live in today. I also like the final part of the book, it was very action packed and it felt like I was watching a movie scene. I could picture in my mind what was happening as I read it. The story was one of my favorites in the series so far. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next for Amanda and Trent, as well as the rest of the supporting characters in her life. I would definitely recommend the Amanda Steele series if you enjoy mystery/thrillers.
This author had me hooked throughout the story. It was really hard to put down for even a short break. Amanda Steele, the police detective main protagonist, really came through though she was working two different battles. One to find a cruel killer of a prom queen and the other to keep her niece Ava out of trouble as Ava decides that her amateur investigative skills are also needed to crack the case. Amanda was a great, dedicated, strong and empathetic female protagonist.
Ava her niece is so realistic in her naive belief that she can handle anything, even the killer of her best friend's older sister, and comes up with constant ruses to flout her mother's rules. Her mom is only trying to rein her in to keep her safe but Ava won't be sidelined when her friend Nadine needs help. Plus, I love how Ava, though only in the ninth grade, has already decided she will follow her grandfather and aunt into law enforcement and make police chief some day. She does have some skills already but that adolescent impulsiveness and belief in her own invulnerability work against her. And get her Aunt Amanda blamed for her own recklessness!
This book has plenty of suspense as the police focus on suspects changes time and again, with the end result a big twist. The characters are engaging; Amanda's personal life sees some development but does not swamp the murder investigation; and there's dangerous pursuit action, particularly at the story climax.
I also liked the revolving change of perspective from Amanda to Ava and occasionally to the killer. Even going inside the murderer's head does not give away their identity and I was left shocked when the truth was finally revealed.

Taken Girls by Carolyn Arnold is Amanda Steele at her best. Her niece, Ava, calls her because the sister of her best friend has disappeared. Amanda and her partner, Trent, normally work homicide but the sergeant gave his OK. Sadly, it turned into a homicide quickly enough. A murdered high school girl; she was to be prom queen that evening. They found her in the restroom. Dressed in a vintage prom dress, made up with vintage makeup, and staged in the bathroom. It was ghastly, even for the professionals. It did trigger an investigation, with no stops pulled out. They discovered another body: the employee from whom the murder had stolen the key to the facility. Then, the worst happened. Kristen called to say Amanda’s niece, Ava, had not come home from school and was not answering her phone. It was now a race against time; a race to save Ava.
Amanda has had a difficult past few years: a car accident took her husband and her daughter, as well as her unborn child. It had been tough coming back from that, but she was and she was almost there. Her dad had been the police chief; she had no such aspirations. She was happy has a detective. She worried how her job would affect her relationship with Logan. It had once. But she was powering forward. She had a great partner in Trent; they had figured out early there was no chemistry and so were able to work together knowing that. He was a good guy. A great partner. Amanda has shown huge personal growth in the time I’ve been reading these books. That is almost as interesting as the crimes she solves. This was a scary one. It is amazing how much damage can be done to a young person and how it can affect their behavior as adults. Something we should all be aware of.

Amanda is at home getting a rare weekend off when she receives a call from her niece. Ava, her niece, asks her to come and meet with them immediately. When she gets there, she is told that the sister of Ava's friend, Nadine, has been missing for 3 days. In addition, they discovered the sister's phone in the river. Amanda learns that Reese, the missing girl, left and there has been no report filed. In addition, Amanda learns that Reese has been voted prom queen and the prom will be held shortly. Amanda has a feeling something is wrong and requests approval for working this case.
She then calls Trent, her partner, to help her. They then start their investigation by talking with Reese's parents and her friends. She discovered that there is friction between Reese and the runner-up. They have not had any luck and the day of the prom arrives and a discovery is made that changes everything. To top matters off, Ava and Nadine showed up at the prom looking for answers. Ava presence leads to major ramifications.
As Amanda and Trent are pursuing the killer, they discover another body. Using what information they found as a result of the second killing, they started closing in on the killer. Amanda had another concern as well at this time. Ava disappeared.
To discover who the killer was, what set him off, what actions Ava took that led to her disappearance, then you need to read this book. The ending is great.
I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
I have read all of the books in the Amanda Steele series. If you decide to read this series, don’t judge it on the first book, The Little Grave. After I read it, I wasn’t too sure how I’d like the series because that first book was more about Amanda’s grief than the mystery she was working on. Since then, she is dealing with her grief and has been able to move on, and she has become one of my favorite Carolyn Arnold characters.
Amanda’s niece, Ava, has a best friend named Nadine whose sister has disappeared. Even though Amanda is in the Homicide Division, she is allowed to investigate her disappearance which soon turns into a murder investigation. Unfortunately, Ava is a lot like her aunt, and it’s difficult to keep her from leaving the investigation to the police. When Ava is taken, Amanda and her partner, Trent, are pressed for time, and I couldn’t put the book down.
Amanda and Trent have worked well together, but he seems to be getting tired of her not following procedure. He definitely there for her, though, when Ava disappears.
There are twists and more murder and many possible suspects. Every once in a while, there is a chapter that is not narrated by Amanda and is about the killer or Ava. Those chapters helped the story flow well.
I definitely recommend Taken Girls. It does stand on its own if you don’t have time to read the complete series.
Amanda Steele may not have started off as one of my favorite characters, but Carolyn Arnold has created a phenomenal character arc and developed her into a woman I can’t stop reading about! Her life is settling down into a sense of normalcy when another case sneaks in and puts a death grip on the entire Steele family!
I love how Amanda is settling into being a mother to Zoe. Even with her demanding job, she makes time for the sweet girl and now that Logan is a more frequent part of their lives, he is stepping up to the plate as well. As much as I wanted to see Amanda and Trent transition into more than work partners, her and Logan are a surprise puzzle piece that fit together quite nicely. Zoe is beginning to spread her wings a bit and because Amanda’s time with Lindsey was cut short, this is all new territory. This is where I really see her character’s transition shine!
Amanda’s niece, Ava, is following in the footsteps of her grandfather and aunt, much to her mother’s dismay. She has a nose for crime and the Steele brains that help guide her through the clues. My heart was non-stop pounding through the scenes of the young girls being taken. The possibilities of suspects were sprinkled throughout with hints of their involvement, but the twist is, by far, one of the best Carolyn Arnold has ever been able to spin on me.
I have been reading Arnold’s books for a while now, but this one took my number one spot as a favorite. Absolutely a visceral read that sticks to your bones!
I received an ARC to read. All opinions are my own.
