Syed Sibte Hassan wrote this book effective for learners of secularism, in this book he tried to find secular thoughts from many famous religions, though this is a good book but I gave it 2 stars because he didn't express books purpose & meanings openly.

A great book.
The book is about the evolution and history of socialism, the famous late 19th and 20th century socialist and communist movements were not the new show in the town, but from the dawn of civilization and humans existence on earth, the earliest people used to live like that, there was no any private property concept in the early years, humans used to live in a group, in the form of tribes, those tribes used to hunt for food together, and whatever they got, they would share equally in the tribes, as in recent times we have also witnessed many tribals societies are getting discovered and we can see their way of living is base on the social living rather than living privately.

As the evolution and history unfolded, now is the age of private life, private property and private home, but this is the very recent phenomenon, this living way has established itself in last 3 hundred years, the fall of feudalism in the west, and consequently the rise of capitalists and the formation of states , and the scientific and industrial revolution have all played it's in establishing the monopoly and hegemony of capitalists world.

The book chronologically discuss the early socialist world, starting from Moses, moving on to the Jesus, it discuss how the religion has also emphasis for the equality and equal rights for human beings, as religion maintains that humans are created from a single body, and they are equal in the eyes of God, whatever they receive on the earth, be it grain, rain and other foods, it has the blessings of God, so not a single man owns anything, it has to be shared equally among all the living beings.

In the early chapters it also discusses the socialist livings of Sparta, it also writes on the Socialist writing of Plato, the Utopia of sir Thomas Moore, and the writings of Francis bacon.

Prior to the French revolution, the fall of feudal system at the hands of capitalists, and the further drifts of worker class towards poverty and ill livings, the capitalists emerge in the Europe at the expanse of feudalism but it doesn't serve any good to the working class people, so in the midst of 17th century, early socialist such as Saint Simon, Robert Owen, Charles foryer, and other wrote extensively on the socialist matters, all of these were against the Socialist revolution, as they thought that with their writing and arguments they could win over the people of other sides and so elites would cooperate would them and will accept the demands of worker communities, but that never happened, although with their efforts they have reduced the working hours from 18 to a lesser hours per day, and also barred children from working, but that still doesn't improve the working class conditions, so as time went on, the French revolution happened, then again the Napoleon rose to power, then in 1817 the modern father of Socialist, Karl Marx was born, and Marx in his early days studied the work of Hegel and other socialist writers.

Then the half of the book discusses the early life, education and professional life of Karl Marx, how he met with Fredrick Engels, and how they wrote numerous books which shocked the world, the revolutionary writing of both the Marx and Engels were the very foundation of the 20th century revolutionary Russian leader Lenin, and Russian revolution, and their writings were also the very cause of the worker class rise in the power in 20th century, almost half of the world at one time were communist countries, still today the China, country 1.4 billions people, is associate itself with communism and teaching of Karl Marx.

Karl Marx most famous work was Das Capital, Marx and Engles wrote communist manifesto in 1848, and the Capital was written in four volumes, first volume was published in 1867, whereas other volumes couldn't get published during the Life of Marx, Karl Marx died in 1884, then Engles collected and assimilated all the works of Marx, and published the 2nd volume of capital in 1885 whereas the 3rd volume was published in 1894, and its fourth volumes was published in two terms first in 1905 and second in 1910.

It was the writings of Karl Marx that shook the foundation of capitalists, he pointed out how capitalists manipulate workers, how they exploit them, he also defined numerous economic terms such as Value, surplus value. During his time of writing in Newyork Tribune magazine Marx exposed, how the East India company plundered the India, how they destroyed India's world famous cotton industry, then during the 7 year war of 1856-1863, how the company became a real force, and then occupied the industrial cities of India, then exported the raw materials from India, and then produced them in theirs industries, then brought the finish product in India, and sold all the products their, as they have already destroy the industries of India, so the demands have to be met, therefore they also created the demands.

Marx also prophesied many things which came true, he mentioned fthe rise of Socialist in Russia, and he pointed in 1882 that new way of socialist revolution which emerged from Russia, that's what happened in the 1917, Karl Marx also said that everything that we do, it's demise is also in it, for e.g capitalists builds mills and factories, they need workers for running them, as the required work is very demanding so huge number of workers works in a factory, as working together they also form a formidable unity, hence it just need a good revolutionary leader for guiding these workers and raising them to power. As they are already together so it is not that much difficult.

While I was halfway thorugh this book I came to know that this isnt original writing of sibte hassan , rather a book named "socialist traditions from moses to lenin by Alexender gray exists which is now being translated into urdu and is published by a known publishing house in lahore . This was a shock to me and wasn’t expecting this from a writer like sibte hassan sahab to plagiarize or even if it is in his own words (I hadn't read the said book yet but checking contents I found the same chapters ) he should have given proper reference. anyhow this was most concise read on history of different socialist movements throughout the history in Urdu language. Writings of Hegel , Marx and Engels and their brief biography was very simply described. I would have given it five stars for its simplicity but I cant forgive him for this plagiarism.
