Jeanette Lane does an impeccable job at describing the concept of teeth throughout this informational story. In this particular tale, Ms. Frizzle's class has show and tell. One student brings a tooth that she had found. The adventure then begins, as Ms. Frizzle and the class take the magic school bus in search of the missing tooth. They travel inside a variety of mouths in search of the owner of the missing tooth, from a human to a cat. Finally, they find the owner of the tooth, and along the way they learned many valuable facts about teeth.
This book presents very authentic and accurate information to readers. It discusses all of the details of teeth, and what they are used for. The teacher, Ms. Frizzle goes into detail about the components that make up a tooth, and the area that surrounds them. The information is all presented in a way that appropriately flows throughout the story. It provides an easy read for many students to understand. Especially since each part of the tooth is discussed when the magic school bus is actually in a mouth. This provides an authentic example for students. The format and design of the book is also interesting and engaging. It appeals to children because of the comic-book layout that the book portrays. It is also accessible for children to follow. By the characters showing enthusiasm and interest in finding the mysterious owner of the tooth, readers are engaged as well. This style of writing is congruent with the personalities of the characters portrayed, which generates more interest in the readers minds. Therefore, the facts being provided by this book are being read with enthusiasm by the readers.
I thought that this book is an excellent early reader for students. As long as it is within their independent reading levels, I think it would be an appropriate book to read to learn all about teeth. This book could be paired with many other lessons about bones and other body parts. Many story stretchers and discussions can be made from this story.
