The Exorcist's Handbook

Rate this book
The Exorcist’s Handbook is a rare peek into practicalities of occult exorcism written by Josephine McCarthy, one of the worlds leading occult exorcists. The subject matter is approached in a clear, practical, and humorous way, and leads the serious occultist through the issues, concepts, approaches, and tools necessary for such endeavours.

Unfettered by religious dogma, The Exorcist’s Handbook cuts through the fog of confusion that abounds in such a difficult and complex subject and gets straight to the nuts and bolts of such thorny issues as parasites, the removal of curses, death work, and the types of beings that an exorcist may encounter. The Exorcist’s Handbook also delves into issues such as self-protection, self-maintenance, and keeping energetically clean.

Written upon her retirement from active exorcist work, the author gives the reader a strong insight into strange and complex world of spiritual service, of the personal sacrifices an occult exorcist must make, and of the dark humour that inevitably comes from working in one of the more obscure and challenging aspects of occultism.

Josephine McCarthy is one of the world’s leading magical adepts and is author of over twenty books on magic and occultism.

“A rollicking yet profound guide to one of the thorniest aspects of occultism, spiced with a dose of earthy, no-nonsense wit.” —Richard Smoley, author of Inner Christianity

The author gives very, very dangerous advice. I would not recommend this book to anyone except perhaps as a guide on what NOT to do. A remarkable level of delusion.

I was very disappointed in this book. As one who banishes "demons" on a daily basis, I found the author's descriptions and practices to be deeply rooted in fear and superstition. I was hoping to find something more useful to my own ministry and practice.

DNF. Truthfully, this scared the living hell out of me. The author essentially walks the reader through her practices in very dangerous psychic/spiritual territory, to the extent you realize you’re actually following her along to the edge of the abyss. I can’t recommend this at all, though it was fascinating and intriguing, it felt reckless. Some things are best left alone, yeah?

THATS IT!!!!!

Luckily I went the cheapest way—- kindle. I can’t imagine paying full price for this.. As I was nearing the end and saw the book was almost done it was a huge disappointment.. if this were a $5 or $7 book, 5 stars would be completely warranted. That’s what I dislike about the book is that it totally felt unfinished or as if it could have given more.
What I like about it is the character aspect. How it describes the character necessary for such work.. it’s actually good for life..

There are parts that are preachy and it seems to be centered on the Western occult tradition. While there is some good information, it seemed like this was an introductory book that may have led to a line of the author's tools. (Like the specialized tarot deck). Condescension was laid on pretty heavy.

On the good side, she has some experience. This guide is filled with useful information, you just have to use a filter.

Amazing

I LOVED this book. It blew my mind. Even though the author could've expanded more on every subject, it's very clear, interesting, and easy to read and follow (if you aren't an exorcist).
It also helped me to understand and see life and the "spiritual world" in a different light.
I don't know, I just couldn't put it down... I'll definitely purchase more books by Josephine.

Be prepared to use specific visualizations and emphasis on the western ceremonial magic tradition, in addition to Gnostic and old Catholic ideas. There is enough information and suggestion included to allow for the reader to use their own ideas and traditions, however. Overall I liked it.

Meh I found it kind of weird, and I have no plans to be an exorcist so ...meh.

Never read a book like this before. The vision techniques proposed by McCarthy are extraordinary but
self-assuring.
There's no melodrama here.
Information is presented as facts and as words of wisdom.
It can bizarre if one reads with a closed mind.

A decent read, although slightly repetitive towards the end. The author describes very interesting approaches, practices and visions that are definitely worth checking out. I'd cut out a third of the jokes as they were rather weak and slightly too judgemental for my taste. Also, did I detect a hint of racism there in descriptions of Ugandan and African magic? Other than that, it's a good read and I recommend it to practitioners of the Western Esoteric Tradition interested in exorcism.
