The Demon is recruiting his servants.

An unthinkable twist of fate lands Dethar in the secret home of his archenemy, Arthen Brightscar, and a dribble of gossip informs him that the elusive but dangerous hero is long since dead. Chagrined at the loss of his chance for vengeance, Dethar turns his sights on Arthen's two young children and undefended widow. Killing them will simply have to satisfy.

Farming and adventuring have little in common, but Atia Morren longs for the day when she can follow the example of her cousin's husband, Arthen, and explore the world. But when the arrival of a cruel but enchanting stranger smashes the tranquility of her home, Atia's daydreaming swells into mad desire, and as time passes and things continue to go wrong, she knows she cannot stay. Escaping with a group of mysterious wanderers, Atia begins a quest to the dreaded Scadkai forest. As the journey progresses, however, she finds herself faced with more than she bargained for, and with powers not previously recognized.

Keepers of Fire will make you sob one moment and pump your fist in the air next!

Keepers of Fire follows the six Morren sisters and their cousin, Elise, as their life changes from what they once knew. One of the sisters, Atia, has always wanted a chance to leave her small, gossipy, town of Chesstel, so when the chance finally shows itself, she takes it, and leaves. On that trip Atia finds out that she posses power she never knew existed within her.

While back on the farm, the rest of the sisters and Elise find out they have an unpayed debt on their farm and now Acinath and Safira must travel Basin to figure out why the debt has suddenly appeared now!

With Atia, and now Acinath and Safira, gone Elise, Mara, and Mavaya must keep the farm together…until one night they’re attacked and Elise suddenly starts to remember things she thought she never knew.

If you like The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien, coming of age, magical powers, small, but not so subtle subplots of romance, prophecies, the classic good vs. evil, or just all of the above, then I HIGHLY recommend you check out Keepers of Fire!!

Straps yourselves in; this is going to be a long review. There are some semi-spoilers so read at your own risk.
Keepers of Fire is an excellent, solid fantasy read. In a nutshell, the story is about a young girl named Atia who's tired of living in the town she's spent her whole life in. She wants to see the world. I get itchy feet if I don't travel from time to time, so I could relate to her feelings.
Anyway, time goes on, and you can see it's really starting to get to her head, but she *finally* gets her chance to leave, and she takes it. Good on her. Some people would call her irresponsible, as she basically turns her back on her family and running the farm. I had mixed feelings about it. At some point you *have* to spread your wings, right? Yet at the same her family really needed her.
So. Atia basically gets swept up in an epic quest, where she begins to see her destiny, that she was made for bigger and better things. I am purposely being cryptic here, as that is the driving force behind this story, and quite exciting.
The BAD:
The story has a slow beginning, and has a tendency to drag with some of the minor characters (hence a star off the rating). Fortunately we spend most of our time with Atia.
It also ends on a semi cliffhanger. Just know, you will probably be thinking about the book, and wondering how it all turns out for months after finishing it. :( Hurry up, M. K.!
The GOOD:
Elsvener, Elsvener, Elsvener. Whew! I'm just going to come out and admit that from time to time, I develop "a thing" for fictional characters. The elf definitely fits the bill. He's gorgeous, smart, fast, strong, an excellent fighter, and sees the good in everyone (to his detriment at times) *fangirl squealing* He is just a cool character. Definitely looking forward to reading more about him in book 2.
Ahem. Now that I have *that* out of the way. When the story picks up, it chugs along and is quite exciting. I have never read a story before with this kind of concept (can't spoil it), and I find it very intriguing. It also has all the familiar elements of a good fantasy tale: quests, adventure, rich world building, and magic.
All in all, if you like fantasy and righteous elf dudes, I highly recommend this book. Very much looking forward to book 2.

The plot was intriguing, but I found the prose to be blunt. Character development was somewhat lacking.
