Rate this book
Something fishy's afoot! Every girl's fantasy of being a mermaid meets every child's reality of having to wash up before bed in a delightful good-night story with a real twist in the tale.

"Meriam liked lots of things, but she didn't like getting ready for bed..." As her mother scrubs behind her ears and combs the seashells out of her tangled hair, little beach babe Meriam describes a most extraordinary diving for pearls, swimming with dolphins, even frolicking with octopuses. Is Meriam making it all up?

No, because Meriam is every young girl's dream--a real-life mermaid who never, ever has to clean between her toes!

A sweet, soothing good-night tail--er, tale!--by the author-illustrator team behind WANDA'S FIRST DAY.

The illustrations in this book are so darn cute!!! I love them! They are child-like in imagination and feel without being demeaningly "childish" and I just smiled all the way through. The story itself is cute--a little bit of a mystery as to how Meriam (the little girl) can go on so many deep-sea adventures in one day... There is a surprise at the end of the tale/tail ;->

This book is about a little girl who is getting ready for bed, and as her mother is combing her tangled hair she keeps finding things that belong in the ocean in Miriam’s hair. With each item that Miriam’s mother finds in her hair, Miriam explains that she got it from the ocean as she swam deeper and deeper. First it was a shell, then sand, seaweed, a starfish, a clam with a pearl for her mother, a little fish, and a baby crab. At the end of the story Miriam is glad she does not have to clean her toes because she has a mermaid tail instead of legs and toes.
I thought the story was nice and it made me think about little girls watching The Little Mermaid. I personally liked the illustrations, and the words did a good job of making the story more enjoyable. I liked how the text was positioned differently on each page, and I had to almost look over the entire page before reading the words. The illustrations in this book are bleeds that cover the entire page and they are each unique. The bold lines with soft colors, and almost stick figure characters are eye grabbing, and I feel like each page is chaotic, but because of the chaos of the images drew me in to pay more attention to the illustrations and see every small object and detail the illustrator included. Something that I thought was interesting about this book was the illustrators. On the cover of the book the illustrators are the Pope Twins, and I did not notice that at first until the dust jacket that was at the end page. On the end page there was a quick description of the author and the illustrators. I thought it was cool that twin sisters illustrated this book together.

Um, Spoiler Alert? This tale of a little girl getting ready for bed was cute. We enjoyed the pictures and hearing of her adventures, but I don't believe we really got in to the drama of the last page as the author may have intended. I don't know if the fact that we SEE that Meriam is in fact a mermaid at the very end of the book is supposed to be some sort of twist, but since the book is called "MERMAID Dreams" (emphasis mine), neither of us was incredibly shocked to see her fins. Still cute, but I'm just a teensy bit confused.

This is a fun tale about a little girl getting ready for bed. While her mama is helping her, she discovers all kinds of odd ocean-themed items in her hair, like seaweed. This is a fun tale, with cartoonish illustrations and enough detail for children to enjoy pointing out items in the pictures. Our girls really enjoyed this book.

Colorful, folksy illustrations of a mother washing/brushing/cleaning out her daughter's tangled hair. A tiny bit enchanting in its colors and overall whimsy but rather bland in characterization and story.

The illustrations are mesmerizing and intricate and the story is just a fun of a girl with everything in the ocean in her hair.

Meriam has to get ready for bed. At least she doesn't have to clean her toes.
