Rate this book
Smite Turner is renowned for his single-minded devotion to his duty as a magistrate. But behind his relentless focus lies not only a determination to do what is right, but the haunting secrets of his past—secrets that he is determined to hide, even if it means keeping everyone else at arm's length. Until the day an irresistible woman shows up as a witness in his courtroom.

Miranda Darling isn't in trouble—yet. But she's close enough that when Turner threatens her with imprisonment if she puts one foot wrong, she knows she should run in the other direction. And yet no matter how forbidding the man seems on the outside, she can't bring herself to leave. Instead, when he tries to push her away, she pushes right back—straight through his famous self-control, and into the heart of the passion that he has long hidden away.

this is my second book from Courtney Milan, and regardless of genre, she seems to kill it every time

you have an EXTREMELY stern hero and a really strong willed and passionate heroine. you have a murder plot. you have steamy scenes. you have one of my strangely specific niche passions in historical romance: lawyerly non-dukes.

i won't wax poetic, but pick this up!

Every so often I go through my Goodreads book shelves, making sure they're nice and tidy; books listed on all the right shelves, star rated and reviews written. That's what I was doing today, and imagine my surprise when I discovered that I had not written my review for this book! I was floored. Simply shocked that I had forgotten to do so.

Well, it might have been quite some time since I read the book, and though I had forgotten to write the review, I have not forgotten the story, or how much I adored Smite Turner and Miranda Darling!

Unraveled is the third book in the Turner series and the story I had been most anxiously waiting for.
Smite Turner is renowned for his single-minded devotion to his duty as a magistrate. But behind his relentless focus lies not only a determination to do what is right, but the haunting secrets of his past—secrets that he is determined to hide, even if it means keeping everyone else at arm’s length. Until the day an irresistible woman shows up as a witness in his courtroom…

Miranda Darling isn’t in trouble…yet. But she’s close enough that when Turner threatens her with imprisonment if she puts one foot wrong, she knows she should run in the other direction. And yet no matter how forbidding the man seems on the outside, she can’t bring herself to leave. Instead, when he tries to push her away, she pushes right back—straight through his famous self-control, and into the heart of the passion that he has long hidden away…
Oh, how I loved this story! Every word, every sentence, every page, every… well, you get the idea. I loved it! Smite’s story, even more than Ash’s and Mark’s, tore me up. It’s emotional – heartbreaking, gut wrenching, poignant, inspirational, romantic and very sexy. It’s all the things I've come to expect from Courtney Milan’s stories and much, much more.

Because this is one of those stories that delivers on every level, I’m going to break it down and ramble a bit.

Smite Turner – AKA, Lord Justice. Honorable, just, compassionate, wise, worldly, naïve, devoted, romantic and so very sexy. Tormented, vulnerable, strong, determined, perfectly imperfect and so very wise. Smite is all of this, rolled into a handsome bundle of manly delectability who I wanted to bring home and love all the pain away. He is my kind of hero!

Miranda Darling – AKA Darling. Clever, funny, independent, compassionate, worldly and yet naïve. In all the things she was, and even those she was not, she’s perfect for Smite! Her stubbornness was both annoying and admirable, and I absolutely adored her!

The story – Fun, exciting, surprising, fast paced, and not the same ol’, same ol’ historical romance. I loved how Miranda’s problem, and Smite’s inability to ignore it, brought them together, helped bring out the very best in them, and each other, and gave them the chance to achieve the happily ever after they were both so deserving of!

The bottom line – If you love historical romance and want your stories to have incredible characters, people who come to life and grab hold of your heart and never let go, then you simply must read Courtney Milan’s Turner series. Each story is amazing, and sure to leave you with a smile on your face and a contented sigh in your soul. Trust me on this – you won’t be disappointed!

FULL REVIEW NOW POSTED

"You anchor me without holding me down. You frighten me without threatening my future. You're unflinchingly devoted. I love you."

It's enthralling. It's thoughtful. It's sweet. It's witty. But above and beyond…it's emotional.

Wow, this was pretty fabulous! *bliss* *swoon* *sigh* Ms. Milan delivers in spades!

BRISTOL, 1843
The story starts off with Miranda Darling playing a young lady in the hearing room. She is a seamstress and wig-maker and the guardian of Robbie, a young boy. For their protection she works for the Patron from time to time. Miranda lives in Temple Parish, Bristol, and the Patron keeps peace over this district. The Patron demands that Miranda attends court hearings in disguise. Usually she delivers false testimony designed to prevent the conviction of a particular defendant. Unfortunately Miranda’s “luck” is running out. Magistrate (Lord Justice) Smite Turner is an intelligent man. He could “smell” a lie and he sees right through Miranda’s disguise. He is very determined to end Miranda’s tampering.

Smite introduces himself to Miranda…

“I’m afraid you have the matter entirely backward. I came here looking for you, darling.”
“Darling?” Miranda bristled. “I’ve not given you leave to address me by something so familiar.”
“If ever I address you with an intimacy, you’ll know it. Darling is your name, is it not?”

Lord Justice is there for the people who need him. He listens. He acts. What happened to him won’t happen to them—not while he can prevent it. Robbie reminds him all too much of what it had been like, taking charge of his brother Mark, when they’d roamed Bristols’s streets. Smite’s mother was mad and she did something horrible.

Since that awful day, Smite has been haunted by horrible nightmares. But even his nightmares have a purpose and he fears that one day he will no longer understand desperation, and with that, he will slowly stop listening to what others have to say. His nightmares serve as a reminder of why he is needed. What will happen to others if he’s going to fail. Our hero is such a tortured soul. He can’t bear it when someone is touching his face and he feels more at ease when he is all by himself. He doesn’t want to have people around him. Smite is already “married” to Lady Justice, however, Miranda turns his world upside down. Despite his need for loneliness, he felt such a possessive desire and he wanted her—desperately, as a matter of fact. That want had the strength of years of loneliness behind it. Miranda becomes his mistress for one month. One month of companionship. One month of warmth, filled with her smiles. A vacation from the coldness of his solitary existence.

Unraveled provides a well thought out plot, outstanding and complex characters, substantial and rich dialogue, well-placed humor and a tiny touch of suspense. Naturally there’s a gorgeous romance too.

"I couldn't take it away even if I wanted to do so. You are my best beloved.
She felt tears form at the corner of her eyes. Much more, and she might not actually be able to hold her emotions in. "Be careful. Your sentimentality quota…"
"Suspended for the moment, I'm afraid." He leaned down and touched his forehead to hers. "Beloved," he whispered. "Miranda, comma."

Ah, my oh my…be still my little heart. I adored the sentimentality quota! And I loved Miranda Darling or Miranda, comma darling…it was so cute.

I loved this story and the characters! Smite doesn’t talk about affection but beneath the gruff exterior, he was a tender and caring man. Miranda is a delightfully adorable heroine. She cares for those she loves, she is smart and witty. It was quite amazing to see how their relationship evolved, and they fell pretty hard for one another. There are a few very emotional moments to cherish. The “issues” between Smite, Ash and Dalrymple are resolved beautifully. I think that these moments are truly exceptional, and I adored that Smite came a bit undone in the presence of his brother Ash.

Love will never magically make Smite whole again. It won't heal his old wounds. But when Smite is around Miranda, he doesn't feel as if he must be alone anymore. She makes him very happy and he feels as if he's come home to her.

Lady Justice is a lucky woman.

Ultimately, Smite found a wonderful woman and love. He is lucky. Love is bliss.

Placeholder, abridged edition: all the stars for the characters and chemistry; slightly disappointing 3rd act drama.

This book was like finding an oasis in the desert or a singles bar serving up top drawer margaritas with every barstool occupied by broad shouldered hunks.

I am punch drunk in love with Smite Turner and Miranda Darling.

Smite is one of the most angst ridden, yet intensely buttoned-up MMCs I ever came across. He made my lady parts shiver. I’d be jealous of Miranda, except she was, hands down, perfect for him. From his smallest of admissions, she could decipher the true man beneath the sober exterior. And, he could do the same with her, offering the wildest of pleasures she had never realized she wanted. Ooh la la!

Not last. Not least.
❤️ Intriguing secondary characters.
❤️ Miranda became Smite’s mistress.

Seriously, Milan outdid herself. I need to explore her backlist. Miranda (comma darling) and Smite are among my all-time favorite couples.

As for the third act. I cringed imagining how foreshadowed events could culminate into a thunderously operatic climax. Thankfully, it did not, but it was unconvincing.

Shoutout to Gloria for her awesome five ⭐️ review recommending this book.

It’s hard to complain when Courtney Milan builds a series around a group of men. At least, so far, I have no complaints. I didn’t like Ash & Margaret’s story as much as I loved these last two, but to be fair, by the point we’re reading about Smite, we already know a great deal about him. At least we have an idea of how tortured he is. Exacting, unforgiving, cold.

And we know Mark knew he needed, and gave him, a dog.

Smite is the difficult character. He’s also intense, straightforward, and loves animals. He listens as a magistrate to all the accused that others don’t or won’t. He’s uncompromising and has a very dark back story. He’s an exceptional compartmentalizer, but he’s also self-torturing, which is probably the most difficult thing about him.

Miranda, on the other hand, is scrappy and sunny--having lived her life raised by many loving adults but with no real stability. She does what she feels she has to, but she’s so aware of what people are saying and adept at reading them, it makes her, not surprisingly, a perfect match for him.

There are many moments in this book where one or the other could’ve sacrificed who or what they were, but it didn’t really happen. Smite is absolutely starved for companionship but remains isolated as a reminder of what he has to do to give back.

This book could’ve easily tipped into angst-making drahhhma. It didn’t, not really. It had tension, and heart squeezing moments and everything I want in a romance. What else it had was communication between the Turner brothers, making me wish I had more to read about. Their love and appreciation for each other along with their growth is the best thing about these. And it did it without being trite.

That’s a whole lot of nothing, honestly, but I guess it’s more words than my initial:

“Erp”

Courtney Milan is my girl when it comes to historical romance, and she rarely disappoints. I'd been looking forward to Smite's book ever since I started the fabulous Turner series, and I am happy to report that I was extremely pleased with this story.

It's been a little while since I read the story, so the details are a little... fuzzy for me. But I loved the stellar writing, the hurt/comfort storyline, and the atypical MCs. I wish the narrator for this audiobook was stronger (the reviews of the audio were so terrible that I didn't even seriously consider buying this one in audio format), because I LOVE listening to Courtney Milan's books. In fact, I think listening to historical romance is one of my favorite ways to do it. Something about the accents read out-loud just makes the story feel that much more special to me.

In ebook form, I found this story to be a touch on the long side, and with the female MC to be just a touch irritating, but overall I think this story was a HUGE success.

For me, there is no more consistently wonderful HR author than Courtney Milan. After reading 12 of her book, I can safely say that she ranks among my favorite authors.

PS- can Richard PLEASE get his own story!!!!????

I have such fond memories of this book from when I first read it (pre-GRs) in 2014. There are three main reasons for the love.

(1) This was the first Romance I read with an English legal-adjacent hero. Just a magistrate, mind, but I takes what I gets.

(2) Smite, the bottled up, straight laced, stern, emotionally unavailable hero, is pretty much catnip to me.

(3) Then there’s Miranda, Darling, who is his perfect foil and awesome in her own right. I can’t think of too many heroines who, when offered a life as a mistress plus an extravagant sum of money in return, say: hell freaking yes. Plus when she’s been threatened by some shady criminal she just tells her Magistrate boyfriend, no artifice, no prolonged secret keeping. She’s sensible and brilliant.

The two of them getting together in the first half of the book is just excellent. The back and forth between them: amazing - Smite overcome with lust and Miranda fancying this man who is so outside her remit. Then there’s their first sex scene, oh boy. So so good.

And Milan’s writing, as ever, is fluid, consistent, period appropriate and has moments of genius.

What I’m saying: there is much good here.

Where it falls down for me is in the plotting and characterisation after that first half of the book is over. It almost feels as though CM loses the thread a bit. She needs a reason to pull the H/h apart (this is a Romance after all, we have to work for the HEA) but Smite’s motivations (to be a good Magistrate he must suffer?) just didn’t hang together.

Milan is great at characterisation and building backstories and linking them to the process of her romances but sometimes I feel like she weaves such a web she gets a bit trapped in it. This book felt that way.

The last minute ~dramaz~ did work for me, but the resolution was a bit daft.

That said, this book is great and well worth reading.

Smite Turner might be my fav Hero in this series. Even tho I love Mark (the male virgin), Smite is another trope I just can't resist - the tortured, fundamentally KIND and LOVING serious Hero.

description

And I love the heroine - Miranda Darling. Miranda, comma, darling :) She's soooo perfect for him! I love how she teases him and understands his bone dry humor. And doesn't let him frighten her with his scowls and coldness and impenetrability.

I Love that Smite has a sentimentality quota. Love the passion broiling just under his skin (for Miranda), love his directness and his strength.

You gotta read this book to know what I mean! Lovers of historical romance - you won't regret it!!

On Kindle sale today 16th Jul 2023 for USD 0.99.

I am re-reading all my 5 star rated romance novels. There are 60 on my shelf. This is book 7.

(Tropes: Social class divide, tortured hero, starched (hero) gets unstarched, forbidden love)

This is how my 7th re-read held up.

description
(this will happen to anyone crossing my path today)

**********
- One month of companionship. One month of warmth. One month of her smiles. A one-month vacation from the coldness of his solitary existence. That was all he could let her be to him. Any longer than that, and he’d never give her up.

description

************
All rise. The court of Bristol is now in session, the Honorable Magistrate Smite Turner presiding.

Nicknamed Lord Justice due to his commitment to the job, Smite is one of the loneliest men in Bristol.

- Any woman with a hint of education could never comprehend what Smite had been through; anyone who could fathom his childhood could never understand what he’d made of himself. It didn’t matter how he yearned for companionship; there was none to be.

description

Smite, eats, breathes, and sleeps the law. Well he sleeps, when his childhood trauma doesn’t keep him up at night. Emotional attachments of any kind are not for him – except his dog, Ghost. He has a daily allowed sentimentality quota and his brothers are kept at arm’s length.

description

Then he meets Miranda Darling.

“Miranda Darling,” he said in repressive tones that would brook no argument. So why was it that she heard “Miranda, darling,” instead?

Who occasionally edges close to the divide of what is right and wrong to keep her charge and herself safe. Miranda also sees right through Smite.

- “Good heavens. That’s quite an act you put on.”
He drew himself up haughtily. “I beg your pardon.”
“An act,” Miranda repeated. “Stand as tall as you like, and frown at me all you wish. I saw you just now. You were feeding cats.”
“So I was. And do you make something of that?”
“You,” Miranda said daringly, “have a kind heart.”

description

Smite is drawn to Miranda unlike anything he has ever experienced, despite thinking she is all wrong for him.

- “Stay safe,” he told her. “Eat well. I’ll walk you back—and I’ll hear no argument from you.”
“You’ll take me to the Bristol Bridge,” she corrected. “It’s dark. I won’t be safe in your half of the city, but you’d not be safe in mine.”
He leaned in and rested his forehead against hers.

description
(Jesus Mulder, just kiss her already!! Sorry, got sidetracked)

After coming to her aid, he makes a proposition.

- “If you insist on repaying me, I ask only that you hear my next proposition in its entirety before you slap my face.”
She drew in a breath. “Am I going to want to slap your face?”
He rather hoped not. There had to be some way to put her at ease, but he didn’t know it. Instead he shrugged. “It’s like this: I can’t put you out of my mind.”
She’d not been expecting that. Her eyes widened. To tell the truth, he hadn’t expected to start that way, either.
“I think of you in my free moments,” he said. The words came faster. “I think of you in moments that ought to be taken up by work. It’s affecting my judgment—witness what happened with Robbie yesterday. I keep thinking of what I could do for you. No—I must be perfectly frank—what I want to do to you.”

Miranda agrees to become his (limited time only) mistress, but with a stipulation that there will be no affection between them.

- There was nothing easy about Turner. He’d fashioned himself into one hard edge. He was all blade and no handle. If she held him close, she’d risk being cut.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

description

- “My life is duty. Essentially.”
Miranda wasn’t certain if she hurt more for him or for herself. “What part of your duty am I?”
He squeezed her hand. “You’re the ray of sun at the center of the storm.”

- Smite reached out and took her hand in his.
“There,” Dalrymple said, pointing. “What’s that? That’s sentiment. I can’t believe I’m seeing this.” Smite looked at her hand, intertwined with his. He turned it in his grip. “I have no idea what you’re speaking of.”
“Hush,” Miranda said to Dalrymple. “I’ve found that if you don’t speak of them, he doesn’t count gestures against the quota.”

- His arms came around her in the dark. It was an embrace—one without heat or want, just care. Affection. Love, even if he wouldn’t say it, and wouldn’t want it said.
She wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. She held that fluttering sense of new emotion close as well. She loved him. How could she not?

description

- She’d been harboring—somewhere deep inside her—the hope that if she offered him the warmth and care that he’d lacked all these years, that he’d decide he couldn’t do without her. But this destroyed all her illusions. She wasn’t the first person to care for him. She wasn’t special at all. And if he could walk away from the brother who so clearly adored him, whom he had known from infancy, a few weeks with her would prove no impediment at all. Her last, foolish hope crumbled under the crushing weight of reality.

description

Don’t despair however, Lord Justice is not holding up his end of the bargain so well either.

“I’m not broken,” he repeated. “Although at the moment…”
This was what came of violating the sentimentality quota. Everything he kept bottled inside him came out. He shut his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“At the moment,” he muttered numbly, “I may be coming a bit unraveled.”

description

************

Side note – this book can be read as a standalone. But I highly recommend reading book #1 in the Turner series, as Smite’s big brother, Ash, has a fantastic story (despite maybe not coming off as the most intriguing character in this book).

I have yet to read the middle brother’s story, but I am getting to it 😊

I'm just going to post a few thoughts from this truly fabulous book.

~Smite Turner. He is the type of tortured soul that you just want to hug but he refuses to let anyone in due to his childhood and the circumstances suffered from his crazy mother. His reasons for keeping all that fresh and foremost in his mind will make you tear up and love him all the more and see him as a wonderful, different, type of hero

~Miranda Darling. Daughter of actors and fluent in disguises, she becomes a central part of the Patrons scheme against magistrates. She is strong, courageous and the perfect balm for Smite. She does not pity him when he reveals his secrets. She does not shun him when he tries to shut her out. She accepts Smite for who he is and does not try to change him, which is refreshing. Is it Miranda Darling or is it Miranda comma Darling? Only Smite knows for sure...and makes sure to tell her she will know the difference.

~Brotherly and family love. It was wonderful to see more into the depths of the Turner brothers. Together, Ash, Mark and Smite suffered so many different, deep emotions that wove together to form a complex story that won't leave your mind anytime soon. In Unraveled we finally get the last few pieces of the back story and get to watch Smite attempt to mend ways with his brothers. But he has a 'sentimentality quota' of half an hour a day so it is interesting to see how he finally reveals what he has had buried for so many years.

~The Patron. This added a nice bit of mystery and suspense to the novel and added in some wonderful secondary characters. The Patron protects women and children from the unsavoryness of the lower class but it comes with a price and when Miranda gets a chance to be free, it does not exactly work out like she hoped. I truly did not see the reveal of who the Patron truly was until almost the end and I was a bit surprised so that is always a bonus.

Overall, I loved this heart-warming, heart-breaking book! You will love Smite and all his flaws because they make him him. You will love Miranda and her flaws as together they are complete yet still flawed. This book is going to make you sigh, hope, and cry. Its going to get you upset (I mean, really Smite--I wanted to knock him upside the head once) and its going to make you smile. It is a truly fabulous ending to a really remarkable series from a very obviously talented historical writer. I truly felt like I was there...in the court, in the streets and in their homes. This is one simply breathtaking book that you do not want to miss! 5 stars

Historic Romance Not for me

I didn't realize this was a "mistress" story. The kind where the heroine is forced into it due to poverty or hopeless conditions, while the hero flips back and forth between being nice and being a cold hearted jerk.

Definitely not my cup of tea. I don't care how difficult someone's past is, I want my heroes to be steady and true. I can occasionally extend mercy, but not when he disrespects the heroine to the point that she gives up her dreams.

The story has one bad word, used twice, and there are several intimate scenes.

I was waiting anxiously for Smite's story, and I wasn't disappointed. I'm a sucker for the damaged heroes bit, and Smite is definitely a bit touched. And, shock of all shocks, I liked the heroine. Like, completely. I don't recall there being anything about her that I didn't like. She was straightforward and not weighed down by petty indecision and useless shame. She doesn't hold herself to some ridiculously high standard and claim some moral high ground all the time, which I find to be exceedingly annoying at times. She's a woman who knows how to survive, and she doesn't apologize for doing so, but she's not mercenary in her designs.

The only way I can describe the story is by saying it's sort of like Oliver Twist or Annie meets The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. Totally weird, I know, but it worked.

This book put me in a terrible predicament. In all honesty, I cannot rate a book, no matter how well written (and this one is) high when the subject matter is one I absolutely hate - that of a young innocent selling her body to someone for the promise of money, with the rest of the book centered on that sexual relationship. Unfortunately there was absolutely no reference whatsoever to that subject matter in the synopsis or I would have avoided it altogether, in my defense, however, until now, I have found Milan's writing to be some of the best in the business without such extended and prolific sex scenes, so this one really caught me unaware... touche'.
In her defense, if one looks past the 60% of the book that is sex scenes, the story is just as riveting and the character development that she weaves with such genius is still there in spades.

3.5 stars. A decent read about a woman raised in a troupe of actors and a stern Bristol magistrate who fall for each other. Both have issues to be addressed, but they do form a real and convincing relationship, with a HEA.

The heroine's name was Miranda Darling, and I did enjoy the moments in the book where she was trying to decide whether Smite was calling her Miranda Darling or Miranda comma Darling. Cute and nicely done.

It would probably have been better to read the series in order rather than read the last book first LOL. Oh well, this one stood well enough on its own, even though some of the secondary characters have obviously starred in previous books. I may read others in the series at some point. Maybe I'll add the series to my 2021 Mad About Series challenge.

*potential spoilers*

Each time I read a book by Courtney Milan I think that she can't possibly write anything better, and yet I'm always wrong. I'm going to say it again - Unraveled can't possibly be topped!

Each chapter took us deeper into the psyche of Smite, traveling the long and disturbing road of his childhood, but cheering for him with each small victory that is revealed. I'm at a loss to describe how much I simply loved him as he made Miranda his. Oh he was definitely cruel at times but it was a cruelty to himself most of all, and I'm glad Miranda was the type of woman who could look past her own feelings to see the needs that Smite had, but would never ask for.

The argument between Smite and Ash made me cry - you could just feel the anguish both men were feeling, neither having any idea how to breach the gulf that separated them. I was so happy to see them reconcile at last.

Of the trilogy, this is by far my favorite one and well worth the wait. I just wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

5 stars / A+ and definitely a recommended read.

So right now there is a big international story about an American producer who took advantage of his position to sexually harass countless women over a 30-year period. A quote by one of the women really stuck out for me:

“I am a 28-year-old woman trying to make a living and a career. Harvey Weinstein is a 64-year-old, world famous man... The balance of power is me: zero, Harvey Weinstein: 10.”

In Unraveled the hero is a wealthy judge who after talking to the heroine a couple of times asks her to be his mistress. He'll give her a house for a month, a thousand pounds. Did I mention she's emaciated, one step away from living under a bridge, is the primary (only) caregiver for a young man and is being threatened by the 19th century version of the mob?

Because of her dire circumstances and the fact that she and the hero had ZERO history/relationship before he asked her to fuck him for a month everything seemed really tawdry and unsavory to me. Balance of power: heroine 0, hero 10.

But what REALLY stuck in my craw was the fact that the heroine didn't even put up even a passing resistance to the idea. She wanted to be his mistress and fell in love w/him almost immediately after he popped her cherry. It's one thing if she did it and resented the fact that she had to lower herself to that level, quite another when she is so receptive.

Let's not even talk about the cringe worthy moment when he ends their fuck-fest two weeks early and she is crushed by the idea of not having to sell herself anymore:

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she said. “I love you.” “
“I know. But—I have always been wedded to Lady Justice. And if you think that I will be loyal to you above the demands of my work, you are mistaken.”

Ouch!

While this is a well written book, the fact that the heroine had no shame or self-respect really rubbed me the wrong way. I would have preferred for her to be upset at the idea of having to sell her body and counting down the days until the contract was over. Instead, she was puppy eyes and longing for the hero from the get-to.

Yeah, this was just not my thing.

Unraveled is a well-written story centered around family dynamics, friendship, poverty and injustice.

Great character development

Smite is an unconventional lord who doesn’t talk a load of bs.

I don’t know how to do anything by halves, Miranda

Miranda is a likable heroine who has common sense.

‘Do you know what they do to men like that?”
They hang them. And it doesn’t matter how good the men are, or how much they keep to themselves, or how kind they are to inquiring children. It doesn’t matter if they can translate ancient Greek into the most beautiful thing you’ve heard in English. They hang men like that. Do you know what it is like to live in fear of one whisper, one rumor, one false step? Do you know what it is like to fear love, because it will get you killed?

This book doesn't have cheesy dialogue, a non-stop crying heroine, an alpha hero, shitty misunderstanding, and angst overdose. Nothing in the plot is contrived. I really enjoy it.

I can’t believe that I only discovered Courtney Milan last year, but I’m so glad I did. It’s no wonder she’s become one of my favourite authors. Her stories are original and beautifully crafted, her characters are unique and compelling and her writing is so emotional, evocative and sensual.

There was just enough of Smite in the previous books to intrigue me and I’ve been anticipating reading Unraveled ever since.

The hero, emotionally scarred by past childhood events, is common enough in the world of Historical Romance but Ms Milan succeeds in creating one of the most fascinating heroes I’ve ever come across. She gradually developed Smite’s character through his actions, his interactions with others and the insight into his thoughts and feelings. I loved Smite with his flaws and idiosyncrasies (especially his ‘Sentimentality Quota’). I was so pleased that he stayed true to his character throughout. He could never truly be free of those terrible childhood experiences because they are part of who he is; they are what spurred him to became a magistrate. He even regards his nightmares in a positive light:

They were more like a call to arms. They were a reminder of what had transpired. Of what it meant for him to do his job, to listen to those who came before him. Of what might happen if he turned a blind eye.

I like Miranda because she’s a realist and does what she has to survive in the slums of Bristol. I don’t have a problem with her decision to become Smite’s mistress. She’s attracted to him and it means an apprenticeship for Robbie and future security for herself. She’s also strong, witty, determined and independent and just the perfect heroine for Smite. She really cares about him and is willing to accept him flaws and all.

I was so happy to see Smite finally reconciled with Ash and settle his grievances with Richard Dalrymple. The scene with Ash was so, so heart-rending but finally they were both able to reveal what was truly in their hearts.

The mystery element of the story had lots of twists and turns. I didn’t guess the identity of the Patron and I liked the way Ms Milan painted that character in shades of grey rather than black and white. The final confrontation scene in the docks certainly held some surprises.

Here are a few of my favourite quotes:

“Ghost. Do listen. In event that I need a squirrel brought to justice, I will go to you first. Until then…” He adopted his harshest tone. “Behave in my absence, or you will pay the consequences when I return.”

She reached to touch his cheek, and he grabbed her hand.
“I said, I’m perfectly well.”
But he wasn’t. A flutter of…of something passed through him. Something barely recognizable.

Her pulse beat, and an unexpected thrill ran through her at the sight of him. The sensation spilled through her body in little shocks, like a harpist strumming out an arpeggio against her ribs.

She was… God, there were no words for her. She warmed up his dark room.

There was nothing easy about Turner. He’d fashioned himself into one hard edge. He was all blade and no handle. If she held him close, she’d risk being cut.

“…The truth is simply this: you can find a better man than I. God knows you wouldn’t have to look very hard. But I don’t believe you can find one who loves you more.”

VERDICT: SIMPLY PERFECT AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

RATING: A STELLAR ★★★★★

I have to admit to a little disappointment in this final book of the Turner series. It was a good book, well-written as always, and it was interesting to see it address some issues like the criminalisation of homosexuality in Victorian England and the arbitrary nature of the justice system at the local level. But I was somehow hoping for more from the story about Smite, the third Turner brother, in many ways the most traumatised and damaged of the three.

The heroine, Miranda, was delightful, and I really felt she deserved her HEA. But Smite was so controlled (he had a "sentimentality quota", which was funny, but seriously nuts!) and disciplined, I felt he never really surrendered to her in the way she surrendered to him. For me, that is an important element, as it embodies mutual trust in a relationship. Yes, he opened up a lot, and she was able to help him on the road to healing, but what did she get out of it, apart from the security? I just wondered whether he would be able to give her enough affection, both in the physical and the emotional sense, when she herself had been surrounded by affection as a child. I guess it was early days in the relationship and Smite was going to have to change A LOT, but maybe he would manage ....... The epilogue hinted as much.

Richard Dalrymple re-appears in this book, I suppose to redeem himself somehow, but after the way he treated his sister in the first book (Unveiled I just didn't buy it.
I am probably over-thinking it, as usual! It was certainly an enjoyable read- 3 and a half stars for me, rounding up to 4 because of all the lovely historical and political detail.

Not bad for a historical romance! 3.5 stars
Unraveled is the 3rd book in the Turner series and I ended up reading this as a standalone.

The main characters Smite Turner and Miranda Darling were interesting and had layers. Courtney Milan gave Smite Turner some depth with his backstory and childhood. He suffers from some deep, deep scars and Miranda Darling is an orphan that grew up on the streets of Bristol. She’s street smart, weary and does odd, unlawful jobs for the Patron who is a shadow figure that controls the justice on the streets of Temple Parish.

Miranda is obviously going to catch Smite’s eye since he’s a magistrate and tries to be completely devoted to justice. Doing unlawful jobs for the Patron isn't going to go over well!

Decent characters, good story and the writing was well done! I’ll have to go back and read the other books in the series about the other Turner brothers.

i can't believe this series is over! i loved every word of it, one of the only historical romance series to have me so engrossed and captivated. it has all the cliche elements that make this genre so irresistible, yet the romances are set in quite unique settings and the plots are highly intriguing and different.

strongly recommended!

I finished this a while back, but I've been too lazy to write a review. To be honest, this novel reminded me of all the things that are wrong with this genre.
There are no surprises any more. I'm tired of lazy plots with the sole purpose of filling up pages and bringing angst in the romance. I'm tired of bad villainous characters and spineless heroines. I'm tired of characters forgetting their family, their priorities all for the sake of 'Troo Lurve'. I'm tired of this so-called love happening within the first few encounters. I'm tired of the guy being a cold player and the girl a fool after him.

I find it hard to believe that a law-abiding, cold man would give up his ideals in his first encounter with the 'criminal' heroine. I don't get why authors built up this huge personality, only to contradict it within those first few moments with the lady in question. It's just disappointing.
However, whatever problems I had with Smite, I liked him better than Miranda Darling. I think Courtney Milan forgot to give Miranda a personality.

Maybe this genre has very little source material to begin with, because I swear I've read these scenes too many times now; the customary introduction of the past couples in the storyline, whether they are wanted or not; the scene where the girl wins over the guy's friends/family in the very first meeting by her unusual and witty remarks; the would've-been-cute-if-it-wasn't-done-in-every-romance moment where despite desperate endeavours by the family, it is the special girl that changes the guy.
What a load of crap.
I'm not buying any of this.

I wish that I could give this 5 more stars!!! There are some books that become more than just a mere romance and this one of those books. The emotions of the book become so sharp that you have to stop reading for just a moment to clear your eyes and catch your breath. That was how Smite and Miranda's romance went for me. At time is was sharp, beautiful and painful. Smite has closed himself off from everybody, because of his experiences in the past. But once he met Miranda, he couldn't hold himself from her. I wanted to cry at times, because he would say something cutting to Miranda knowing that he had hurt her and he couldn't rest until he had done something to apologize for it, in his own way. It is hard for me to put my thoughts in order with this book because it was so huge in scope of how I felt about the book. The entire trilogy was phenomenal, but Smite's book was amazing. When we finally get the full story of why he is the way he is, how can you not be hopelessly in love with him? Miranda was perfect for him, because she never let him take himself too seriously and she respected his boundries...to a degree. If you haven't read a CM, don't start with this book, start with Ash's book and work your way to this one. It was heartwrenchingly good and it brought a shuddering sigh out of me when I was through, as I knew I had just finished a masterpiece.

***This is not a finished review, I simply will have to organize my thoughts better on this one. ***

So I realized that while I spend rather a lot of time lauding the genuine charms of Courtney Milan's writing, I have only reviewed one of her books. And that one a novella. Personally, I think she's elevated the novella into an art form, but her novels are incredibly entertaining as well. It's high time I went back in the stacks and reviewed possibly my favorite of her full-length novels. Rose Lerner recommended this book to me early last year and, as it is the third in Milan's Turner Brothers series, I immediately checked out the first from my local library. I made short work of all three books and, while I do love Ash (the eldest brother and hero of the first book, Unveiled) with a warm, fuzzy sort of love, I do believe this third and final book (and brother) is my favorite. It helps when the author keeps a secret for an entire series, waiting patiently to reveal it all in good time. Smite Turner was that secret. And it was a decided pleasure accompanying Miranda and getting to know him on his own terms.

The streets of Bristol are a swirling den of card sharks and pickpockets, petty criminals, and masterminds. They fear no man. No man but the infamous Lord Justice. Known throughout the teeming city for his unsympathetic, single minded thirst for justice, Smite Turner's reputation has taken on a life of its own. And while he is unsympathetic and single minded, he is also wedded to his privacy. And Lord Justice's fabled courtroom showdowns do tend to get in the way of his carefully crafted life of solitude. Which is why when Miranda Darling winds up in his courtroom, he is loath to follow his instincts, all of which are clamoring that he has seen her somewhere before. For her part, Miranda is dismayed to realize she's caught the exacting magistrate's eye. Especially as she was in disguise at the time. Part of the network of the Patron—the leader of the local underworld—Miranda is required to appear in court from time to time to testify on behalf of people the Patron wants kept out of jail. Working her fingers to the bone as a seamstress and wig-maker, Miranda can barely keeping herself and her young charge afloat. She wants no part of anything that will put her in Lord Justice's path. Her luck has run out, though. When Smite sets his mind on finding the truth behind the lies, he sees it through to the bitter end.
Miranda shook her head slowly. "Good heavens. That's quite an act you put on."

He drew himself up haughtily. "I beg your pardon."

"An act," Miranda repeated. "Stand as tall as you like, and frown at me all you wish. I saw you just now. You were feeding cats."

"So I was. And do you make something of that?"

"You," Miranda said daringly, "have a kind heart."

He turned away from her, the tails of his greatcoat swirling about him. "Don't enlarge too much upon the matter. The cats were hungry. I had food. This seemed to be a problem with a ready solution. It's not kindness to solve problems; it's efficiency."

"I stand corrected. You have an efficient heart."

I don't know, guys. There is very little not to love about Unraveled. I went in with what I thought was a fairly accurate approximation of just how shut off Smite was. But the reality does rather take isolated to a whole new level. And given how thoroughly Ms. Milan portrays Smite's remoteness, I was amazed at how easily I accepted the introduction of an outsider into his life. And not just any outsider, but a confirmed accessory to several criminal activities. Now that might cast Miranda in a dim light, while nothing could be farther from the truth. Miranda is excellent. From her independence and earnestness to her checkered past and closeted loneliness, she shines throughout the novel. Together, they are a jumble of contradictions and uneven lengths. Smite is intimidating and impatient. Miranda is thoughtful and uncertain. But they are both of them weary of being ever alone. It is this key facet of their makeup that allows a measure of affection and need to ease its way into their interactions. And that small change in Smite's daily regimen is all that is necessary to set his life on a course he had not planned, one he abjectly disapproves of.
"I'm not broken," he repeated. "Although at the moment . . . " This was what came of violating the sentimentality quota. Everything he kept bottled inside him came out. He shut his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "At the moment," he muttered numbly, "I may be coming a bit unraveled."

Poor Smite. It is painful watching him resist change and grasp Miranda's hand at the same time. As the agent of this change, it is an uncomfortable role she assumes. Uncomfortable in the extreme. But that need we spoke of. It is so dashedly real, living and breathing and pressing out against their fragile skins. I felt so much on behalf of these two lost ones and the ruthless choices they are forced to make. The specter of Smite's past is large enough and dark enough it casts a shadow upon every smile, every small happiness. That shadow is so palpable that I wondered right up until the end whether or not the coping mechanisms he put in place would allow enough give to accommodate joy. It was what I wanted for him, for both of them, and it was what they deserved. But, as is the case in my favorite novels, I would have accepted whatever ending Ms. Milan saw fit to give them, the writing is that clear and pleasurable. Unraveled was the book that forced my hand. I confess, I will read whatever she writes.

“I was hoping I could avoid the bit in the proposal where I lay out all the advantages of the match to you. There aren’t nearly enough of them. The truth is simply this: you can find a better man than I. God knows you wouldn’t have to look very hard. But I don’t believe you can find one who loves you more.”

What a beautiful story! A satisfying ending of the trilogy. Before this book I wasn't sure about Smite, but here I really got to love him.

Smite, aka ‘The Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every living thing, as I have done.’(yes, that is his full name, NO, I'm not making it up), aka Lord Justice is fiercely devoted to his job. He's suffered through a lot of things in his youth, and now he wants to make sure everyone is treated fairly. there's just black and white in his world, innocent and guilty. No affection. Sentiment. Love. Just a self imposed isolation. Then he meets Miranda Darling, a shady character by his standards, spirited and beautiful woman stuck in the slums. And he wants to help her.

Smite is definitely interesting. Seemingly cold and unbending he's nonetheless amazingly compassionate and even *gasp* romantic. You have to dig hard, though *grin*

“I always mean precisely what I say, even if I don’t say precisely what I mean.”

“You,” Miranda said daringly, “have a kind heart.”
He turned away from her, the tails of his greatcoat swirling about him. “Don’t enlarge too much upon the matter. The cats were hungry. I had food. This seemed to be a problem with a ready solution. It’s not kindness to solve problems; it’s efficiency.”
“I stand corrected. You have an efficient heart.

In an attempt to keep her near him, but unable to deal with his feelings in a different way he offers to make her his mistress. And along the way she makes him feel. Despite his sentimentality quota.

“Would you know,” he said, his tone a bit more businesslike, “this conversation has officially exceeded my daily quota for mawkish sentimentality. That’s it, then.”
“Quota?” she said. “What are you talking about?”
“My sentimentality quota. There’s a limit as to how much sentiment I will tolerate in a day. I’ve just reached it.”
“It’s not—” she glanced at the watch in his hands “—not yet three in the morning. And this is…a special occasion.”
“Nevertheless, we’re done. As much as my pride loves to be puffed up, I’d appreciate it if you could refrain from further compliments. And definitely no protestations of love—that would put me off for a good long while.”
--------------------
“You know I hate that name.”
“I do. I figured I’d best call you by it, to make sure we didn’t risk your quota. Otherwise I might have to invent a pet name for you, and we should be finished with each other before the day even started.”
He leaned into her. His mouth brushed hers in a kiss, startling in its sweetness. “Ah. Miranda-no-comma-Darling,” he said, “I knew there was a reason I wanted you to fill my days with an absence of sentiment. Thank you.”

And along the way he starts falling in love...

“You don’t let me frighten you. You’re not afraid to disagree with me. From the first, you made me feel warm in a world where I often feel alone. I’ve reposed confidences in you that I’ve scarcely told another soul. And if you must know why I want you near, it’s because I don’t like to think of you too far away.”

Miranda Darling has certainly led an exciting life. Raised by actors, but eventually forced to leave her haven and take a boy with her, her life is no longer easy. The opposite, actually. She had got involved with criminals and she is no longer certain what the right path is. When she meets Smite, and realizes what an incredible man he is, things become even less clear. The only things she is certain of are his trustworthiness and her budding feelings for him. So when he offers her the position of his mistress she says yes. Even though Smite says he wants no affection it is quite clear to Miranda that's his own way of asking for it(sadly, or luckily, she's right :D). But Miranda's past might not be that easy to shake... And the notorious crime lord might not let them get away. I liked the fact that Miranda didn't rush of into danger at every turn. She calmly and logically decided her course, trusting Smite to help.

I loved watching these two fall in love. They're both wonderful, and so different! I also liked that unlike in the previous books Miranda was well aware of her worth and did not need Smite to see it. He was just a man who loved her and whom she loved. The story was very emotional and I felt for both of them and their hurts. Still they managed-together. And I'm left with great satisfaction of reading this series and a definite affection for the Turners...and Courtney Milan's writing.

I leave you with one of Miranda's thoughts I loved:

"She had always thought that she wanted someone to love her beyond all reason. Someone who would slay a regiment of knights to save her the slightest inconvenience. She’d been wrong. That sort of fool left nothing but a swath of bloody knights in his wake."

Head and shoulders above almost all HR currently on offer, yet strangely less than the sum of its parts. An FMC with conflicting loyalties, an MMC with a seriously disturbing past - all the elements of a terrific read were there. I just couldn't quite believe in the central relationship.

It's still—don't get me wrong—a book very definitely worth reading, but grading on a Milan curve, it's not quite the best of the best.

This book was basically written for me: a sweet, sexy romance, with some action and lots of psychologically-based angst. Bonus points for including a bunch of stuff which I happen to like, including scenes at a theatre, food descriptions, characters with families and responsibilities, period-accurate birth control (it bugs me when I keep thinking that the heroine is going to get pregnant at any moment), and a "mistress for a month" agreement.

I managed to read the last in the series first, but it didn't seem to matter. It's a series of historical romances about three brothers who were raised by a psychotic, abusive mother, and what happens to them afterward. In an afterword, Milan said that she was interested at looking at how different people react differently to similar events: a theme right up my alley.

This book focuses on the middle brother, Smite (short for a long Bible verse) Turner, who grew up to be a justice-obsessed magistrate with PTSD. I would love to claim the credit for the increased frequency, realism, and individuality of portrayals of PTSD in romance novels, but I think it must be some sort of zeitgeist phenomena. Anyway, it's very believable, and, of great interest to me, the way he thinks about and deals with it is also very believable.

There was a point early on where he tells the heroine that he isn't broken and doesn't need fixing, and I thought, "Oh, God, here comes the anachronistic lesson on the social construction of disability!" Thankfully, later events proved that he had something much more specific and personal in mind. (Nothing against the social construction model! But while I don't look to romance novels for historical accuracy, I do look to them for plausible characterization. And while people with PTSD often have very complicated mixed feelings about getting better, there is a lot of inherent suffering going on completely apart from social stigma and lack of accommodations.)

I also liked the dialogue, the subplot involving the heroine's entanglement with a mob boss, and the way that the characters consistently told each other what was going on, thus averting a great many opportunities for stupid misunderstandings. They were adults with problems, who acted like adults. Also, I count five sympathetic gay men in the cast. Good going.

Milan was a Harlequin author who decided that she could do better self-publishing. This book is selling for under four dollars on Kindle.

Blog Rating: 4.5/5 stars

I, along with many I’m sure, have been waiting for Smite’s story from the second I finished UNCLAIMED. His past was full of abuse from a mentally unstable mother. When his older brother, Ash, left home, he tried to take the attention off his younger brother Mark – unfortunately that put all her attention on Smite. He suffered so much and when he went to the town elders to voice his concerns about what his mother was doing and what she was capable of doing, his pleas fell on deaf ears. His mother found out what he did and he was punished. It’s a punishment that ended up making him into the man is he today. He has deep fears of water, being trapped and deals with nightmares. As a result, he’s created a life for himself that’s very solitary. He lives in a small home when he could afford something much nicer. He employs a small staff at his home, but they live don’t live there. He’s keeping his life intentionally hard all so he can remember where he came from and what he overcame because he uses that every day with his job. As a magistrate, he’s vowed to listen to everyone that comes before him. He wants to make sure what happened to him doesn’t happen to anyone else on his watch.

The one word I kept thinking of whenever Miranda (no comma) Darling came on page was: tough. She’s young, she’s poor, she’s trying to care for a boy, Robbie, whose mother abandoned him and she’s had to do favors for the neighborhood “justice”, if you will, known as The Patron. This person takes the law into their own hands, has many people in their back pocket and while Miranda fears the Patron, they also helped her out of a bad situation, in return for a favor from her every month. During one of her favors, she crosses paths with Smite. He follows her back to her home and can’t get her out of his head. After a kiss that shook them both, Smite gives her a proposition. He wants to move her into a nice house in a better part of town, give her enough money to live comfortably and in return, she’ll be his mistress for one month. Miranda’s attracted to him, and the future that Smite is giving her is worth the price…his only demand – there will no affection between them. He’s not paying for her affection and doesn’t want it. This proves to be harder to withhold than either of them thought.

Their relationship starts out how you might imagine. They spend their first night together, with Miranda as his mistress and the layers that make up Smite start to come off, not by his choice at all. It starts with a simple enough touch, Miranda touching his face, that along with the rain, water, small spaces, it all takes him right back to the abuse he suffered, when he was locked in a basement that flooded. Smite sees things in black and white and emotion has no place in his life. He doesn’t want anything to interfere with the job he does. He must remember the pain to be able to remember to listen to people. But, Miranda questions him, pushes him gently and gets him to start feeling, and moving into that “gray” area. He has a long overdue talk with Ash and they get a lot of things out in the open. It’s one of my favorite scenes in the book and it felt like both Ash and Smite were ready to move forward after clearing the air.

For as much as Smite made me want to show him affection that he refused from everyone else, he had me chuckling through much of the story. He has a “sentimentality quota” for each day. Don’t be sentimental or “yammer endlessly” for more than 20 minutes, or he’ll cut you off mid-discussion when you’ve past his quota for the day. It’s little quirks like this that make Smite who he is, but Miranda doesn’t make him feel any less of a man for who he is and what he’s become.

“Despite his apparent fluency in the English language,” she said earnestly, “Smite lacks the capacity to express some very basic thoughts. Compliments that other people manage quite easily, like ‘My, you look lovely,’ or ‘I hope you don’t die tonight’ are quite difficult.”

God. How had he ever thought he would be able to send her away?...”You look lovely,” Smite repeated. “I’d rather you didn’t die. Don’t believe a word Miss Darling says, Margaret. I can express any concept I wish. I merely prefer not to.”

They’re very up front with each other, which is another huge plus from me. They don’t keep secrets, Smite flat out tells her what happened to him in his past, and what she can expect from him. And Miranda shows him no pity. He’s able to feel calm around her and he feels at home with her, things he’s never had and never wanted before. Miranda, in turn, doesn’t hide the troubles she’s still having with the Patron. There was one moment when I thought she was going to keep a note from the Patron blackmailing her into a meeting, but she came clean to Smite and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I love a couple that doesn’t hide anything about who they are or what’s going on from the other person. They seem more genuine that way, and it’s easier to fall for characters that have character.

Smite in the bedroom…who knew that a man who wants or really doesn’t show any emotion could be so emotional, at least with Miranda. He has a wicked way about him, which isn’t too surprising since he did ask her to be his mistress, but when he also finds out that she’s a virgin, he doesn’t hold back, but rather just changes his plans for their first time together.

“You…you’re one of those men who doesn’t debauch innocents, aren’t you? If you’d known, you would have never entered into the arrangement.” She swallowed hard. “For what it’s worth, I don’t consider myself very innocent.”

He watched her intently.

“Also,” she finished quietly, “I had rather looked forward to being debauched. By you.” She set her hand in his.

His fingers closed around hers. “Let me explain what has changed: I want to have you very, very badly. But as this is your first time, I’ll have you very well instead. It would hardly be in my best interest to put you off the activity for any length of time.”

Her mouth went dry.

“Don’t look so worried. I’ll have you against a wall eventually.”

The Patron storyline goes throughout the book, and Smite does get involved and tangled up in it. It’s a nice suspense storyline that doesn’t at all overpower the main romance. One detail that stood out and one that I couldn’t imagine the book without, is Smite’s dog, Ghost. In the previous book, UNCLAIMED, Mark gives Smite a puppy. It was a small scene and it was sweet at the time, but the full meaning of what Ghost means to Smite comes out in this story. In the beginning, Smite is so alone, his only companion and friend is Ghost. Ghost is there to greet him everyday, he’s there to lean against Smite when he wakes up from a horrible nightmare. It just made me love Mark even more, because that one small gift impacted Smite’s life in a big way.

It makes me have such a happy sigh when a character that I’ve been anticipating a story for gets his book and it delivers on every level. Miranda, (insert comma), darling is a perfect heroine for Smite. She’s strong on her own and she just gets him. Finally, I’m a girl who loves her epilogues, and this one has a sweet ending to a very satisfying read.
