'Hey, I'm Kitty Slade. My life used to be pretty, well, normal . But it turns out seeing dead people is a big deal . I had no idea what I was in for...'
When Kitty goes to stay at a friend's house, it's not long before she discovers a ghostly ancient curse is at work. Things are about to get a whole lot more spooky for Kitty Slade...
Fiona Dunbar is a British author. She was born in 1961 in Hemel Hempstead and as well as being a writer, she is also an illustrator and a graphic artist. She has written and sometimes illustrated books such as the Silk Sisters trilogies and Toon-Head. Her books, The Lulu Baker trilogies, have also been adapted to become a children's TV series called Jinx.
Kitty Slade has a rare condition: she can see and communicate with ghosts. Her parents are dead, and she and her brother and sister live with their Greek grandmother, Maro, who home educates them. On a visit to family friends, Kitty discovers that their house has a poltergeist; the spirit of an ancestor who died in a house fire while under a curse. Then accidents start to happen, Kitty feels she must solve the puzzle set by troublesome ghost John Wilkes, to break the curse, before someone gets badly hurt.
This was an enjoyable, fun read, told from Kitty's point of view, including excerpts from her "Ghost Blog". In the interview at the back of the book, Fiona Dunbar states that she wanted to write a "Famous Five" type book: as it is so much told from older sister Kitty's point of view, we don't get so much of a "team" feel in the narrative: I would have devoured this book as a 10 year old, when I was obsessed with Nancy Drew. I can imagine 10 year olds+ loving this book.
This book is an amazing book and I highly recommend it to people over 10 years old. This is a well executed novel and Fiona Dunbar has done a remarkable job.
