Detective Inspector Michael Angel and his team are desperately searching for a murderer dressed in a dog collar. Mystified, Angel is unable to determine whether the murderer is a crazed priest or a man in priest’s clothes. Tramps who call at vicarages begging for money are suspected, but nothing is what it seems. Angel is greatly tested, and the investigations become more dangerous, as he races to find the killer to prevent more blood being spilled. This is the 17th in the highly successful Inspector Angel series.
The Yorkshire author writes crime stories about Detective Inspector Michael Angel who lives a fairly happy existence with his wife Mary in the town of Bromersley in South Yorkshire.
This seems to be the last book in the series about detective Angel. It maintains the high standards of the others and can provide a few hours of entertainment. Readers who have experienced some of the earlier books will recognize the secondary characters as well as Mr. Angel. Mrs. Angel has some honey do’s for him in this book and he responds like the preoccupied curmudgeon he is. There is a certain guilty pleasure for readers in that he’s unapologetically authoritarian and expects the underlings to jump, and at once, when he raps out his orders. Probably he’d prefer not to have female detectives in the group but he gives them credit when they show aptitude. I realize I have said nothing about the plot. The story starts with an armored car holdup and Angel figures out that drugs are involved. It’s a good read.
Another really fine DI Angel mystery. Humor woven in and through the nasty happenings to Anglican priests. One really wonders why some man is going around with priest's garb on killing fellow priests plus a railroad clerk! But the clues to the solution unfold throughout and the worst villain is not detectable until the climax. But suspicion of wrongdoing by that villain is reader available fairly early; it's just the extent is not known until near the end. I found almost no red herrings in this tale. This one is Vintage Angel!
I have now read at least 5 of the Inspector Angel books and have enjoyed them all. This one was very good. Honestly by the time I finish one I feel exhausted from all the work this man does. The one thing I don’t like is Superintendent Harker and truly wish Silverwood would leave him out. He is the most inefficient, useless, worthless person. I find it interesting that it seems that in every British police book the Superintendent is portrayed this way. Ah well, time for another DI Angel book.
So, after wading through this narrative, no explanation is given re the 4 million pounds, no resolution is made re the minister's sister's fate, and, most bizarre of all, no explanation is made re Grogan's attempt to escape with 4 million pounds he never recovered. Nor is there any attempt to explain what the school kids did with the coca inexplicable packets, let alone whatever comeuppance they richly deserved for aiding and abetting Grogan's devious scheme. As usual, Silverwood rushes pell-mell to a conclusion that beggars belief!
Yes, Angel always gets his man, but the way he does it makes for a fun ride. This time, although the reader will likely determine the culprit before the end, the why will be less apparent. I particularly enjoyed the part of the plot involving the feeble little elderly lady racing enthusiast - it was a nifty and a bit humorous diversion!
Fab-u-looooous!! After 16 previous books, you can't believe that they can get EVEN better! EVEN more twists & turns & several things going on at once. I love all of these books & this is yet another cracking read from Roger Silverwood.
All of DI Angel's stories are entertaining and as usual he solves a complicated case in rapid pace. Fortunately for the reader the clues are throughout the book . Complicated mystery .
Another great story in the Inspector Angel series who like the Mounties always gets his man. Lots of exciting action with plenty of twists and turns. I hope that there are a lot more to come.
was interesting enough, but it didn't have my heart in my mouth and it wasn't a major struggle to put it down. I may have missed the point somewhere along the line but SPOILER ALERT ⚠ why was the suitcase at the sisters house if the priest was in Rome (or wherever ... I've forgotten already)?
Enjoyed reading this book right from the beginning to the end. Love the descriptions of the characters in the book and how Angel comes to his conclusions also the funny way he describes his boss. Enjoyable book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more of his work. I will definitely recommend this author to my friends and members of my book club.
Nimber 17 in the series and a good read, we two priests are murdered and a bank heist of £4 million . angel and his cohorts have their work cut out on this one. So go out and buy the book and ENJOY.
