With the local sheriff lying dead in a pool of blood, Sally fights for her life while a frontier surgeon tries to work a miracle. Moral of the story: Don’t hurt or otherwise mess with Smoke Jensen’s wife, Sally. Yeah, It’s just not going to end well for the fools, no matter how the odds are stacked.
Sally Jensen was in the town of Gothic to help a friend set up her restaurant. the two women were in the bank when the Bill Dinkins gang came in to rob it. Dinkins was a stone cold killer and ended up shooting the manger dead and Sally in the gut.
Smoke races from Sugarloaf to her side and when she is out of immediate danger, he makes preparations to track the gang down. He gets deputized as a U.S. Marshal so he can go anywhere.
Then he sets out.
The newspapers are full of the incident and Dinkins knows Smoke is after them. He's leaving a trail of dead bodies across Colorado, so the trail is not hard. Dinkins puts a $1,000 bounty on Smoke's head to slow him down, if not get him killed. He's got his brother, gunman Wes Harley, in the gang now and feels better about it. Still, he takes no chances. He gets five hundred wanted posters, $5,000 on Smoke dead or alive care of a sheriff in a neighboring county. He wants bounty hunters involved and sees poetic justice in bounty hunters killing Smoke, then being arrested for murder on a fake warrant.
It doesn't deter Smoke.
His beloved Sally is fighting for her life and Dinkins and his band are going to pay.
Sally goes to Goth to help a friend open a new restaurant while there she and Tamara, the friend are in the bank, the bank gets robbed by a gang led by Bill Dinkins and Sally is shot by Dinkins. Pearlie gets word to Smoke, who comes as fast as he can to be with Sally. Once Sally starts to get well Smoke leaves to dispose of the entire gang but Sally takes a turn for the worse and Smoke puts the gang on the back burner so he can return to the Sugarloaf Ranch and be with Sally. Sally lives and once again Smoke goes back on the hunt. Can Smoke all by himself take care of the whole gang or will this be the end of the fastest gun ever in the West? You will have to read the book to get the answer.
Sally has been visiting relatives and friends back east. She returns on the train and arrives earlier than expected; runs into a dear friend and agrees to back her in a new business. That prompts a trip to the bank, not knowing that it is about to be robbed ... and Sally is shot. She takes awhile to recover and in the meantime, Smoke is running down the gang for revenge. Another entertaining read.
Bad guys shoot wife and her for gunman husband goes after them. There are a few twists and turns, but this is basically it. The good guys are good and the bad guys are totally evil. Simplistic. You like the good guys and the characters are well developed, so it was a decent read.
Enjoy the 39th book of the series. Again I read these a few years ago. I do remember it starts to have Sally be a fast draw with her gun. I know towards the end of the series it starts to get a little ridiculous on how fast she is and how many people she ends up shooting.
I truly love reading William W. Johnstone's western series! They have great story lines, interesting characters and they are very always a fast paced adventure.
Smoke's wife Sally takes a trip to visit family and friends living in Vermont, New York City and finally Washington, D. C. where she visited with President Cleveland and his young wife Frances. On her way back home to Sugarloaf via train, Fay arrives in St. Louis where she boards an express train, which knocks off a day of traveling from three days to two days..simply marvelous don't you think??isn't modernization simply marvepo. Fay meets a young lady who attended Vassar College with her and has now fallen on hard times which were created by her dead husband 's law partner who embezzled money from their firm and left her penniless. So now she lives in Gothic, Montana hoping to open up a restaurant. Fay learns of her friends dilemma and offers to loan her the two thousand dollars to open her restaurant. While there in Gothic's bank, it's robbed, and Fay is wounded by one of the robbers. Not good, you all know as soon as Smoke bears about his Fay, he'll be in the wind on their trail until he kills them all. This Dinkins Gang thinks their smart, so Peter Dinkins puts out a phoney "WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE SMOKE JENSEN." Should have never done that to all people "Kirby 'Smoke' Jensen" lordy those men don't know what they have done. Because it ain't gone to work. Peter Dinkins just bought the bank for all of them..you know dirt blankets for all and dinner for the critters.. That's how it goes when Smoke's is behind you riding "Seven." Take our word, leave Smoke and his "ALONE."
Assault of the Mountain Man by William Johnstone This book in the saga/series is about how Sally gets shot by bank robbers when she's at the bank to get money to give to her friend to start up her restaurant. When Smoke finds out and is told the robbers died he takes care to make sure Sally recovers. He leaves her in good hands and he proceeds to follow up leads that get him thinking the robbers did not die at all. In the trial others concur the men were the same ones that had robbed another bank. Story follows the robbers as well-the path their lives lead them to. I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
