As others have noted, this is an engaging story. It is written at the intermediate level (B1 - B2) and I think that it is properly rated at that level. I would rate this as a novella - too short to be a novel and too long for a short story, With the novella you get 50 pages of text. There are no vocabulary list, no short questions to see if you understood the story. What you get is a text that is similar to what you would red in your native language except it is written at the intermediate level. My guess is those a more advanced level (C1 - C2) would find this a bit too simple. While there were some words I was unfamiliar with it was pretty easy to determine the meaning from the context.

This is the story of Amdres, the father, Esmeralda, the daughter, and Alejandro, the son ,as the deal with a threat from criminal and are forced to flee their home.

J’apprends l’espagnol depuis quelques années et ce livre m’a beaucoup plu. Il nous faut absolument une suite à cette histoire par contre Joël!!! A quand la suite? Merci, Audrey

Spanish Easy Beg read

This book was very easy to read, understand, and follow along for a Spanish beginner. I enjoyed the repetitiveness of Spanish words and phrases. Highly recommend.

I was devastated to learn that Joel has passed away unexpectedly. I mention this in case others are searching for his books and unable to buy them. I trust this is just part of getting things in order, and expect them to be available again. If I learn anything more, I'll update this post.

I'm not part of Joel's wonderful work, but I have spent countless hours listening to his learning Spanish podcasts, and is my motivation to connect new learners with his books.

As a high beginner Spanish learner, I wasn't sure if I could handle a full story yet. However, I found ‘Los diamantes de Esmeralda‘ surprisingly accessible. The narrative was engaging enough to keep me interested, and written with enough context to allow me to follow the story without having to frequently translate words. While learning Spanish is the primary goal, the fact that the story is so captivating is a welcome bonus.

As I progress in my Spanish studies, I'll revisit the book and its sequel to gauge my improvement and delve deeper into the story. Unlike collections of short stories (which I also have), this format allows you to develop a connection with the characters, historical period, and plot. In my view this significantly aids comprehension.

‘Los diamantes de Esmeralda‘ is a fantastic option for high beginner and intermediate Spanish learners.

Interesting and excellent for intermediate Spanish

Was easy to read and interesting for intermediate Spanish. Nice to actually enjoy something rather than struggle through it. Would love to read the sequel😊
