This is an interesting book because the concept is very simple: colors, but the language and reading ability is for someone who already comprehends that.

• Title: Cassie's Colorful Day
• Author: Faith Ringold
• Recommended Ages or grades: 0 and up
• 3-5 sentence summary of the story. This books is about an African-American girl who is getting ready to spend the day with her father. Her father has a surprise for her. The book is called her colorful day because as she gets dressed, her clothes are bright and colorful, the ice cream parlor is colorful, as well as signs along the way. Even Cassie's favorite ice cream is colorful strawberry.
• At least one “extra”
o What did you find particularly enjoyable/unenjoyable? I enjoyed reflecting on the time I spent with my father as a child. What is different about myself and Cassie is that I had siblings, so we went to get ice cream in a BIG group. It was always an adventure to go for ice cream in my family!

I like that there's an actual storyline here. And props for a story involving an African-American father having a special day with his daughter -- and for the pink page being the dad's pink (strawberry) ice cream soda.

Cassie’s Colorful Day

1) Introduction
Every Faith Ringgold book is based off of civil rights and slavery. Every short picture book she writes and illustrates has to do with the African American culture. In Cassie’s Colorful Day Faith Ringgold takes Cassie’s life for a day with her dad and puts it into a fun colorful story.

2) Brief Summary
In Cassie’s Colorful Day, her dad is taking her out for a delightful fun treat. Going along with the title “colorful day”, Cassie decides to pick out an outfit full of all different colors. For example, her yellow and red polka dot dress, purple shoes, blue and orange bows, and even her green pocketbook she carries around. After dressing colorful she and her dad go to their surprise treat. They go out to an ice cream parlor which has a big blue and orange sign. All of these colors make the story fun and exciting! While at the parlor, Cassie decides to order her favorite pink strawberry sundae!

3) Evaluation
I believe this book is a fun book for children especially if children are learning their colors. Its illustrations are very unique and interesting. I think that for younger kids it’d be a good book to read aloud and point out all the different colors throughout the story. It also has the aspect of multiculturalism which is also a good thing because many children don’t get to read books with much diversity in them. Overall this book would be a fun and exciting way to teach children their colors.

4) Conclusion
This book is great for young elementary school students because it gives them an idea that everyone is different in their own way, and wearing whatever you want without feeling out of place should be encouraged! Be yourself and have fun.

Ringgold, Faith. CASSIE’S COLORFUL DAY.

Faith Ringgold's board book is durable and can last through time. This book allows the reader to imagine a time when they were so excited for a special day. It is a special day for Cassie with her dad to the ice cream shop. The author introduced and identified the main Character Cassie on the cover of the book. Involving the mother in the story expressed attitude on life with parent's love. Children identify with characters like themselves and protagonists. Cassie’s Colorful Day illustrations help establish the mood of happiness with its bold bright colors. The author showed the right amount of emotion between the characters. Incorporating reality and childhood imagination with colorful cartoon art. The text expressed the emotions and content of the illustrations. This concept book teaches the reader colors as the author included color words, if it said purple the text was purple. Allowing them to see the color and the spelling as well. Having the text match with the illustrations and description of the scenes allows the tension of this book to be my favorite even as an adult. I would allow students to make a book about a special day using imagination while using labels and allow nonsense stories. Imaginative play and learning are essential in early learning.
