My mother thinks my job is crazy. I'm a paranormal investigator; she's Nancy Reagan crossed with Martha Stewart. She's always preferred my sister, Lily, who is following in her perfect footsteps.

But this time Mom needs my special skills. She believes my stepfather is possessed. I admit he's not his usual dapper, charming self, but sleepwalking doesn't sound that weird. Until the sleepwalking spreads through the family and cousin Donna walks right out of her apartment window to her death. Then my sister goes missing and I have to find her and solve the mystery before Lily and her unborn child are harmed.

Normally I would have assistance, but my right hand, a hunky angel I've nicknamed Casper, has business of his own to take care of-business that might take him out of my life forever. The stakes are too high for me to lose, but I'm not sure I can do it alone...

This is the second installment of the Allegra Fairweather series. I haven't read the first book yet, and while there were some little things I didn't understand, South of Salem can just as easily work as a standalone.

Allegra is, for the most part, a likable character, easy enough to grow attached to. She could have used her brain a little more from time to time, but even when she failed to think things through, I didn't get as frustrated as I could have. She is a paranormal investigator, but she doesn't have any supernatural abilities, except for a toe that itches every time she's close to something paranormal. (I think that little detail was supposed to be cute, or even funny, but to me it was neither.)

There's really nothing in this book that hasn't been written before: a sarcastic, not-too-bright heroine, a perfect mother and perfect sister who don't approve of her lifestyle, a super sexy guardian angel who is forbidden from ever having sex (he would if he could, of course!), and a witch best friend with information that can save the day.

The author tried a bit too hard to be funny most of the time. However, there were some moments that had me laughing out loud:
At death’s door, there’s really only one thing to do: sing Barry Manilow. I launched into “Somewhere in the Night.” The acoustics were brilliant. I sounded so good even Barry would’ve been impressed. For a moment I was almost happy, floating and singing in my new improved voice. Then the water began to suck me down. I guess it wasn’t a Manilow fan.

My biggest problem with this book was Allegra’s relationship with her pregnant sister Lilly. I understand sibling rivalry, but I just couldn’t stand the way Allegra treated Lily. Here’s an example:
All I could think of was Lily. And not in a bad way. Not, ‘She deserved this for being a bitch’. I was genuinely worried about her. And not because Mom would be pissed off if I let anything happen to her favorite daughter. I actually wanted Lily to survive. Go figure.
Yeah. She’s your only sister. She had to be kidnapped by an evil witch for you to figure that out!

That being said, South of Salem is a super light, non demanding read. It’s a perfect book to take to the beach. I don’t know about you, guys, but that’s where I’ll be spending the next three months!!

The protagonist in this story is of course Allegra Fairweather, she is the black sheep of her “perfect” family. She got a perfect sister named Lily, and her mother is married to a successful politician. Given the frames of Allegra’s family I have a hard time to come to terms with that her mother called her daughter Allegra. I feel like it’s a very unusual name in the context of a couple of “perfect” people. Unless she is named after the illegitimate daughter of the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron and Claire Clairmont or something like that, as a reference to classical literature. The choice of name may be mentioned in the previous book, as I haven’t read that yet, but no doubt, I will.

Allegra is a paranormal investigator whose big toe itches when something paranormal is nearby. Other than that she has no special powers and she's a likeable, down-to-earth heroine. It's a fun paranormal mystery read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Allegra has a hunky guardian angel who she nicknamed Casper as a child. He pops in and out of the story as he's otherwise engaged in attending an angel awards ceremony. It's not, however, a romance.

I haven't read the first book, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, but I think South of Salem is perfectly readable as a standalone novel.

No Ick, A bit Cliche

For a woman from Down Under, Janni did an okay job on the geography in this book except for one area with many caves that I am unaware of being in the Boston area. I suppose it could be the Saugus Iron Mine area but I don't think so. My husband has hiked pretty much every wild area in MA and doesn't know of them. Also, the local caving clubs don't know of caves in Eastern Massachusetts. Since the geography and geology of the area are important it is hard to let that slide. This area seems more likely in Arizona.

I liked the story, It was written in a light and young style. The subject matter was pretty serious with several deaths and more to come. And I really did not know how the story would turn out. There were several characters near death, and any of them could have died at any time. Even an infant was threatened even before it could draw breath.

I like the cover of the books, depicting a woman who I assume is Allegra, and wonder why she is so self-deprecating. If her sister is more perfect than she is she must be a model. SHe is probably self-critical and always talking about her perfect sister because she grew up and really adored her sister until Lily (her sister) turned on her. And, her mother constantly talks about how perfect her sister is. how she is married to this wealthy man (step-dad's son). Anyone who ever grew up in the shadow of a perfect child, a child, often, who patterns her or his self using the parent's life as a model, you can appreciate how Allegra feels.

I don't know but if your kid follows in your footsteps it must be gratifying. Whereas, if you are a little weird, say a paranormal investigator, you don't get the praise, and often your career is derided.

Allegra and her sister, even at the wrong time, fall into their sisterly habits as if they were kids once again. Y0u know—the equivalent of "MO-OM she's looking at me!" or "Did not!" "Did so!" Of course Allegra feels bullied by Lily who, with her first breath offers a makeover for Allegra. But under the animosity there is love and they are family and Allegra, and her Guardian Angel, Casper, comes through to save the day.

There is also forbidden love! Casper and Allegra are really into each other but it is against the rules for a guardian angel to date his protectee.

While the plot and the character's issues are well drawn I found the characters them two-dimensional. The mom is only concerned about how things appear, the older sister is really trying to fit into the same mold. The men don't really have personalities other than as politicos or a means to an end. Allegra is mostly about trying not to be her mom or sister but wants her mother's approval so badly it causes her constant pain when she is the vicinity. That's why she lives 3,000 miles away. Mom probably does favor Lily because of Allegra's attachment to the disappearing Daddy.

An enjoyable read with more depth than apparent at first glance.

South of Salem, by Janni Nell, is the second book in the Allegra Fairweather Mystery series. This is yet another Australian author who has recently come to my attention, and I have Carina Press to thank for allowing me access to these stories.

Allegra Fairweather is a paranormal investigator whose last case took her to Scotland where she solved a case involving banshees, a homicidal ghost and a trio of drunkards. She has a success rate for solving paranormal cases of 99.5 percent; that also has alot to do with her guardian angels assistance.

This time around she is asked to travel to Boston where her Mother and older sister Lily lives. Sandra believes that her husband, Steven Hampton, is possessed because he has started to sleepwalk. Sandra doesn’t actually like what Allegra does for a living, so for her to reach out and ask assistance is a major turnaround in Allegra’s life.

Allegra has a guardian angel who she calls Casper. Casper has been a guardina for a millenia, and is hoping that his time will finally come when he can go home. He has been with her since she was five years old. He has saved her life countless number of times, and in this story, that doesn’t change. Casper is also up for the Sir Galahad Award for Honorable Treatment of Women along with Henry the Eight, Caligula and Jack the Ripper. Allegra has a major crush on her guardian angel but nothing comes of it because it is forbidden by the Angel Code of Conduct. One false move and Casper goes away permanently.

This is a story of mystery and the paranormal. No, there are no vampires, werewolves, or fae. The angry ghost, who was once the most powerful witch to ever live, and is trying to kill each and every member of the Hampton family because she was not chosen to marry Steven Hampton the twentieth. It is up to Allegra to find a way to stop her before she ends up hurting her very pregnant sister in the process.

The story takes place in Boston, which is not very far from Salem where the witch trials and executions were held. We learn from Allegra that there are two types of ghosts: misty and solid. Solid ones are the most dangerous since they can use weapons and harm humans. Misty ghosts can’t do anything but appear and scare people, essentially harmless.

Allegra is an interesting, as well as spunky character. She has a best friend named Wanda who is a witch, and lives in San Diego. I haven't read the first book, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, but I think South of Salem is perfectly readable as a standalone novel for those who may be interested in reading it.

I give this book a 2.5
Favorite Lines: “”The Sir Galahad Award for Honorable Treatment of Women.”

I didn’t ask whether he was serious. I could tell by his expression that he was. Curious, I asked, “Who are the other nominees?”

“Henry the Eighth, Caligula and Jack the Ripper.”" (p. 108)

South of Salem is book two in Janni Nell’s Allegra Fairweather mystery miniseries. It follows the heroine Allegra’s investigations of the paranormal. In South of Salem, Allegra faces off with a dangerous and powerful entity set on destroying Allegra’s dysfunctional family.

I didn’t read the first book in the series; I didn’t realize there was a first book called Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator. Despite skipping the book which probably would have set this one up nicely, I kinda liked the story. It’s not a romance. It’s not an urban fantasy. But it is an interesting mystery involving witches and angels.

Once I got over being confused by the references to Allegra’s past investigations and her dislike for her family, I had to deal with the squickiness of Allegra’s biological sister being married her stepbrother. Okay, it’s all baggage under the bus that made me pick up on the paranormal problems which could arise. I didn’t know why Allegra’s stepfamily was being targeted for extermination, but it was entertaining to read about.

I got to admit that I really didn’t like Allegra. She was very immature. Maybe that’s what makes her charming, but for me it got old. It was funny when she spied on her guardian angel Casper. However as the end of the story approached and Allegra was still creating situations which would allow her to touch Casper, I became exasperated. Her voice (in my mind as I read the story) sounded manipulative and sly. And not in a good way. Another thing, for an investigator she sure can be dumb. I wanted to punch her when she became jealous of the obvious hints which came time and time again. Doing so allowed the story to continue longer, but it showcased exactly how immature Allegra really is.

South of Salem is nicely written, but when I’m not sure I ever liked the main character my overall enjoyment of the book is diminished. Allegra acts and speaks childishly. Her crush on Casper is cute, but other than the sexual draw, it felt like a 13-year-old’s attraction toward the new boy in school. The mystery was well developed, but I don’t like Allegra enough to continue this miniseries.

Aussie author alert! *grin* Being aussie myself, it’s always a joy to find an aussie author writing the types of books I love, and becoming a new favourite find for me. :D

South of Salem is Janni Nell‘s second book in her Allegra Fairweather mysteries. Having not read the first one, I was a bit concerned I was going to get lost, scratching my head over who everyone was, and trying to work out the cryptic mentions of previous happenings. Joyfully, that wasn’t the case. It was quite easy to pick up what was happening, and that’s always a good thing.

Allegra Fairweather is a paranormal investigator (don’t call her a ghostbuster!) who is called upon by her mother to find out what’s going on with Allegra’s stepfather. Allegra’s mother believes him to be possessed, and it isn’t long before Allegra is agreeing with her. Something is happening to his family, something terrible.

South of Salem is a fun read – like all good kick-ass heroines, Allegra is witty, sarcastic and strong. Janni Nell has thrown in something a bit different tho – Allegra has a Guardian Angel who she calls Casper. :D Casper’s job is to save Allegra, but while he can’t outright tell her what’s happening with any of her cases, he does tend to break the rules a tiny bit and gives her a hand now and then. But during South of Salem, he has other things on his mind – The Angel Awards, which takes him from Allegra’s side, and could quite possibly be the thing that takes him from her forever.

There were a few things in the book that had me curious and wanting to know more – Allegra’s father left the family when she was only young, and I kept wondering if he was going to pop up in a later book. I kept getting the feeling that his disappearance and not being seen again, has something to do with Allegra’s chosen field of work. Allegra’s relationship with her sister Lily is something I’d like to explore more too – they do not get on at all. Lily seems to be their mother’s favourite – the daughter who did everything right. At times, the relationship between them seemed to thaw a little, so I’d be interested to see what the author does with that. More of Casper too please! :D

If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, witty heroines and hunky angels, you’re going to enjoy this one!

Allegra is a paranormal investigator, and she’s returned to Salem to visit her mother and sister, only to discover her perfectly coiffed society mother desperate because Allegra’s stepfather is possessed. Since no one in Allegra’s family wants to admit that the paranormal exists, Allegra’s usually not the most popular member of the family, but when a cousin dies from sleepwalking and all signs point to possession, Allegra steps in to help.

I love gritty, dark PNR. This is not gritty. In fact, South of Salem is distinctly lighthearted (at one point Allegra sings Barry Manilow), but that was a nice change of pace for this reader. Allegra’s sister Lily and her mother are described as perfect society wives who find themselves frantically trying to save their husbands, Steven Richard Hampton the 32nd and Steven Richard Hampton the 33rd. Fortunately, Allegra has the help of Casper, her guardian angel, and her best friend Wanda, a witch, to help her find whoever is targeting the males of the Hampton family. Allegra isn’t like a lot of PNR heroines in appearance or disposition, but she does care about her family, and her sense of humor helps her deal with them.

I enjoyed the book, mostly because it was so humorous. The Hampton family was delightfully snooty, and their behavior once possessed was the complete opposite of how they would normally behave. The only criticism I have of the book is that Allegra’s rivalry with her sister seemed overdone. Both are adults, yet sometimes when Allegra would think about her sister, she went past snarky and into indifferent and cruel. At one point Allegra’s actually surprised that she’s worried about her pregnant sister’s safety when Lily’s kidnapped by the villain, which seems a bit extreme to me. The book is somewhat light on the romance, since Allegra has a thing for her guardian angel, Casper, and acting on that attraction would mean that he couldn’t be her guardian angel anymore. However, I look forward to seeing how Ms. Nell resolves this issue in future additions to the series, because the light flirting between the two was fun to read. Allegra wasn’t the take-charge, kick butt type of heroine you often see in PNR, and that made her all the more appealing to me. If you’re looking for a fun, short PNR that’s on the lighter side, this would be a great choice.

Another review to come in about 1-2 weeks!

Truth be told: I didn't read the first installment of the Allegra Fairweather series, yet and it took me a while to start (and finish) South of Salem. I'm certainly going to read the whole series someday, but it might take some time and until then, here is my review:

As I said, I didn't read the first book and there were a few things I did not get, but the novel isn't that deep or demanding. Instead you get your easy read and seriously, those little things were so minor that I did not feel completely lost.

Since the series is called Allegra Fearweather, let's start with the main character: Allegra. She's an okay-character. She's a nice girl and I liked that she's no real paranormal being herself and still investigating paranormal cases. Although that could be called dumb. And sometimes I have to admit.. Allegra, what the fuck. You do have a brain, why didn't you use it?

The novel's been a bit of a.. Well, look: It was like the author took things that had been written before (as everyone, even Goethe did, I know) and put them together in a way that she thought was going to be funny, sarcastic et cetera. You got your Sookie Stackhouse-heroine, your Gilmore Girls mother (no, not talkin' about Lorelai here), your Buffy-ish best friend, your guardian angel aka guy who wants to but can't sleep with you, Bella.. um, Allegra.. Did I forget something? Right, the weird sister (Um, where did we have a weird sister? In Boys that Bite, but that book's been a waste of tree.) the strange case.. well. ;) And I have to admit: It worked most of the times.

The plot's been.. Hm. So, Allegra is the black sheep. Her family is oh-so-perfect and she is.. well, she's a paranormal investigator. But when her mom's asking for help, she's coming to see if her stepfather really is being possessed. He's some weird politician and his relatives all die and then there's a freak ghost and did I mention that Allegras bitch-sis is pregnant? And, and, and.. ;)

I'm going to read the first book next week and reread the second afterwards. Then there'll hopefully be a better review than this one. :)

But for now: It's a good read. Easy-peasy and nothing mind-blowing but if you liked the excerpt, the blurb or if you just want to see how an angel and his to-be-guarded try to make out without breaking any rules: Read it.

3 stars?

This is book 2 in the Allegra Fairweather Series. If you haven’t read book 1 do not let that stop you. There are a few references to book 1 but they are not essential to the enjoyment of the story. They do leave you intrigued about the first book though.
Allegra is a paranormal investigator with a guardian angel – a hot, sexy but totally off limits angel. She has a perfect mother and sister, neither of whom acknowledges the paranormal. That is until Allegra’s mother believes that her husband, a politician, has become possessed. Then it turns out there is a family curse on him and her sister Lily’s husband. The witch who cursed the family is also after Lily’s unborn child. This would seem to be a dark read except for the snarky wit that is sprinkled throughout the book. There is some sibling rivalry but I found it to be believable as Allegra and her sister don’t get along and yet can and do count on each other. There is also reference to Allegra’s father who disappeared years before. Although her mother believes him dead Allegra knows this is not the case. It is something I think will come up again in future books in the series. The characters are well defined. I especially appreciated the background on the witches who were involved with the curse and how they related to the family. Allegra has a best friend who is a witch and helps her on this case. I think we will be seeing more of her either in this series or perhaps a spin off series.
I found this to be a fast but entertaining read. I enjoyed it enough to pick up the first book and be interested in the next book in the series. I particularly want to see where the relationship with Allegra and Casper, her guardian angel, goes. If you have been reading heavy books and are looking for a break with some light, pleasant reading I would recommend South of Salem. It has action, snark, good character and plot development, realistic family dynamics and some sexual tension. There are no heavy sexual scenes so it is fine for those who prefer cleaner reads. It is an enjoyable paranormal book.

I received this book from Net Galley. No compensation was offered or received. A review while appreciated was not mandatory.

Note: I was provided an ARC of this book for review through NetGalley. South of Salem is due to be published on 5/30/11

South of Salem is the second title in the Allegra Fairweather Mysteries series. I did not have a chance to read the first book in the series, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, but South of Salem worked well enough as a standalone story (there are several references to previous cases, however).

In this story, Allegra has been called upon to investigate the strange behavior of her step-father. Her mother, who does not appreciate Allegra's chosen profession, is at wit's end explaining her husband's "possessed" behavior. Once Allegra reluctantly begins her investigation, she discovers that other members of her step-father's family have been afflicted by something paranormal that has targeted the family.

Allegra, quite the "smarty-pants," uses her wit (and an "itchy toe") to deal with disagreeable members of her family, in order to get the bottom of the family malaise. In the process, her familial relationships improve, and she gains greater acceptance from her family for her paranormal investigation skills.

As South of Salem is a mystery, and not a romance, this book doesn't quite fit the paranormal romance genre. Allegra does have a major crush on her guardian angel, Casper, but Casper is prohibited from entering into a relationship with his charges. The relationship between the two (or lack, thereof) was a small disappointment for me, because I think there's enough of a spark between Casper and Allegra, but all we get is smokescreen in this tale. To be honest, Casper seemed a much more compelling character than Allegra (she's seems rather irritating and childish, after awhile), and I wanted more, more, more of Casper-- but he only appears on the sidelines on the few occasions when Allegra is in over her head, or needs a nudge in the right direction for solving the mystery.

Overall, I liked this book, and I think the series shows promise. It will be interesting to see if anything more romantic develops between Allegra and Casper in future books-- hopefully Janni Nell puts us romantic-types (and Allegra) out of our misery soon!

Quirky, sarcastic heroine, Allegra's my kind of girl!

Coming back home after being away is never easy, in Allegra's case it's more of a pain in the ass. Her mother doesn't believe in her line of work, her sister is married to their brother (TOTALLY not what you think), oh and her step father is now possessed. If that doesn't spell out, WELCOME HOME, I don't know what does!?

Allegra's mother wants her to get to the bottom of what's possessed her step father & quickly, because possessions are so easy to figure out. As Allegra starts trying to unravel the mystery behind what's really happening with her family, secrets from the past are suddenly floating to the surface. Like mega powerful witches, maulhags and creepy sleep walking!
With the case taking off, Allegra has to now keep a watchful eye on her pregnant sister, for more then one reason. It seems ghosts of the past would do almost anything to get their hands on her unborn child.

Coming into South of Salem I hadn't read the first book in the series, but I found it very easy to catch up on the back history of the characters without being bored or over done.
Allegra is a paranormal investigator with a hunky guardian angel who always happens to show up right in the nick of time. Though she totally has the hots for Casper (that's what Allegra named him), the Powers Above will revoke his guardian-ness if anything ever happens. It always seems like someone just has to step in & put a kink in a potentially awesome hook-up!
I immediately fell in love with Allegra. She's got the quick responses and witty comebacks that will put any character in their place, but by the end of the book she shows a softer side that is always good to see. She takes pride in her work and doesn't care what anyone, including her family, has to say.
There was only 1 downfall that I found in this book, and it was that the ending was slightly rushed. There was SO much going on. Fights, witches, labor, angels, more witches, it just seemed like it was crammed in there. But I will continue to read about Allegra's journey, where ever it might lead her.

3.5/5

Allegra Fairweather is a Paranormal Investigator with a personal life that is a lot more frightening than the supernatural stuff she deals with in her line of work. She handles it all with a sharp tongue and by keeping her thoughts to herself, especially when it comes to dealing with her crush- her guardian Angel, Casper- who will be punished by the beings on high if he ever touches her. Combine that with an uptight and judgmental family and it’s no wonder she uses humor to deal with it all. This time around her family desperately needs her help as they battle a witch trying to kill them by taking control of their bodies when they sleep. Definitely one of the more creepy supernatural villains I’ve come across lately.

South of Salem by Janni Nell kept me a little off-center the whole way through. In part it was due to not realizing this was book two of a series and having a lot of references to past mysteries that left me wondering if I ‘slept-read’ through something. But that was entirely my fault!

The other part of feeling off-center was the way in which Janni Nell combines humor (which relaxes readers) with some seriously nail-biting scenes (18 wheelers barreling down on the heroine and deep dark caves to name but two situations) and gives no warning she’s about to change tack. My poor brain couldn’t relax enough to get used to either path, but definitely an effective way to keep the reader on his or her toes. Don’t think I could survive reading a book where Ms Nell turned all her skills to pure horror.

It was a fast, fun read for me and my only grumbles are about the unrequited love and the way we’re left wondering if really there is even the slightest chance of anything coming of that love for Casper.

Disclosure- I received an digital ARC for this book for review.

In South of Salem, Allegra is back stateside visiting her family. An adult returning home is never easy, especially for Allegra whose family wants nothing more than to ignore anything even remotely paranormal. Of course, when Allegra's stepfather is believed to be possessed, Allegra is the first person they call.

Allegra's family dynamics vie with the paranormal as the main focus of South of Salem, much to my delight. I love Allegra's investigating but as she faces the past and future of her family, much is explained about her personality and she becomes more endearing. Most important here are her interactions with her politician's-wife mother and her clone-of-mom sister. Allegra's job and personality have always put her a bit at odds with the women in her life and I love how they work through this barrier when the husbands are in danger.

The potential romance in the Allegra Fairweather series is killing me. Allegra and Casper are so completely meant for each other, yet can never be together. The tension between them is palpable. We've known Allegra had a thing for him, but in South of Salem we get a better idea of the extent of her feelings and really start to get a feel for how much Casper feels for her as well. When it becomes possible for Casper to get a pass straight to heaven, it becomes frighteningly likely that's he'll leave forever, never having the relationship he and Allegra both seem to desperately want. If only there was some loophole.

I'm a big fan of witches and South of Salem had enough spells and rituals to keep me very happy. South of Salem is a fantastic sequel to Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator. I can't wait for Allegra's next case.

Paranormal Investigator Allegra Fairweather's latest case hits a little too close to home. Her stepfather may be possessed and it's up to Allegra to get to the bottom of things. But this case is more challenging than it seems. When her pregnant sister is kidnapped as well, Allegra pulls out all the stops: midnight grave digging, resurrecting ghosts and calling on the aid of her Wiccan best friend. And, if things weren't crazy enough, Casper, Allegra's sexy-but-off-limits guardian angel, is too distracted to help her. Will Allegra be able to save her family — and herself — this time around?

This is the witty, action-packed second book in the Allegra Fairweather series, but readers won't have any trouble catching up if they begin with this story. This time around, Allegra is forced to dive into the choppy sea of family relationships, helping the very people who've always made her feel like an outsider. Luckily, Allegra is a kick-butt, take-charge heroine. She also has the help from her eccentric sidekicks, who add undeniable quirkiness to the story. The gripping plotline will have readers on the edge of their seat as they tag along with Allegra. South of Salem is a paranormal mystery, the second in the Allegra Fairweather series. I did not read the first book, "Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator," but South of Salem reads just fine as a stand-alone book.

Allegra is called home by her mother, who says her stepfather is possessed; he is sleepwalking. Things must be pretty bad because Allegra's mother does not like that she is a paranormal investigator! Allegra begins to investigate, but things get even more complicated when other members of her stepfather's family begin to sleepwalk and die. Allegra keeps managing to get into danger, but she can always count on her hunky guardian angel, Casper.

South of Salem is a book full of fun. Allegra is a tenacious, fast-talking main character with an unseemly lust for her guardian angel. She has a turbulent relationship with her mother and sister that makes for a lot of laughter and empathizing.

The paranormal parts of the book didn't read quite as spooky and scary as I would have liked. I just didn't feel the life-threatening tension I hope for when ghosts and such are around, even though lives were threatened. But I think Ms. Nell was going for a lighter tough with this mystery and it was enjoyable to read.

Allegra is a paranormal investigator, a job her mother hates until she need Allegra to help her current husband who just happens to haunted by a ghost. Allegra is helped in her career by a guardian angel named Caspar that she has the serious hots for and he seems to reciprocate, or he would if it weren't against the guardian angel code. In the midst of all this drama, there is also some serious sister rivalry and mother jealousy and the main character's own angst that her family can't accept her for just who she is. Not a light mystery to just toss aside; this one will keep your attention the whole time with the intricacies of the plot.

My only complaint about this book was that it seemed to be the second in a series. There was some background information I didn't feel privy too so I wonder if there is another one out there....

Otherwise it was a great story! (Fully deserving of the previous exclamation point which I don't give out lightly.) Books don't usually scare me but this one had me creeped out. The ghost in the book was so malevolent that I had goosebumps running up my arms at several points. I also loved the mystery. It was my favorite kind-family secrets and history; the kind that kept me glued to the pages until the very end. This is a series I will definitely keep checking out.

When I first picked up South of Salem by Janni Nell from NetGalley, I didn't realize it was book 2 in a series, so I had decided not to read it. I hate coming into the middle of a story arc and trying to catch up on the backstory by gleaning hints from the second. It's a lot of work when I could just read the first, right?
Then I read a review that mentioned South of Salem is a great stand-alone. So I bit the bullet and picked it back up.
I am so glad I did! South of Salem is a great paranormal story and you do not need to read the first to understand the second. It had great paranormal elements that were intriguing and fun, and overall, South of Salem is witty and snarky. It's a very light read, yet Janni Nell does an excellent job investing you in her story. I also love the sexual tension between Allegra and Casper (can I take him home?), teasing the reader just enough to pick up the third book (should there be one), without being overly explicit. The relationship development is so well done that they're are completely believable, even down to Allegra's sister married to their stepbrother. I just loved it and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction with a snarky twist.

This was a great read! I was a little nervous about not reading the first in the series..would I understand what was going on? Definitely!!! You do not need to read the first book to get wrapped up in the story.

The whole storyline was great and I loved Allegra's attitude. She is sassy and smart. Her mother on the other hand, is totally annoying. One of those characters that is always worried about what everyone else will think. She is totally embarrassed by Allegra and although, their relationship did improve in this book, I still think Lily is her favorite. Which brings me to Lily....SNOBBY with a capital S. It's all about her. It's no wonder Allegra wants to move away from her family...they are crazy!

But Casper......aaaahhhh! He was like a breath of fresh air. Very swoonworthy:) Their relationship is very complicated and I really enjoy that aspect. It gives the reader something to look forward to in future books!

I really would like to read the first book in the series, Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator. I will be on the lookout for it.

This book is very appropriate for a teen or adult! Mark it on your to-read list!

So when I asked to read this, I didn't realise it was a second book. But I now find myself wondering if there was as much of the little things that niggled at me in this one, in the first one too. There seemed to be an awful lot of repetitive phrases in here, there was a lot of "as my dad would say" or something along the same lines. It got to the point that I sighed in aggravation whenever I read that line but when I looked back over it, it was actually only used about 9 times but it was still enough to bug me. I get it, her dad was Australian but really, having to explain every little non-American idiom used (I can only guess that's the reason, although they all made perfect sense to me) makes me ask, why use that many?

Besides that annoyance, it was a good story. Short but sweet with some interesting bits in it. I'm not too sure if I'd continue reading this series to be honest, as I said, it was an interesting story but there was just something that put me off. The story didn't seem to flow all that well and there was a lot of familial tension between Allegra, her sister and their mother. Too much, in my opinion.

In South of Salem paranormal investigator Allegra Fairweather is hard at work to solve another mystery, but It’s so much harder when the clients are your family.

South of Salem was a very fast paced read, and I enjoyed the story line. But I found myself having to go back and reread paragraphs due to the way one scene would (not flow) go into the next. The only other complaint I had was Allegra herself. Allegra’s jealousy over her sister was so childish. It was mentioned so many times that it made me annoyed with Allegra, and question her character.

What I absolutely loved was the character development of the villain, Demelza. Demelza was given a rich back story, with an identical twin and unrequited love. By the end of the book you were cheering on all efforts in killing her, and the evil schemes set forth to destroy Allegra’s family.

Overall I enjoyed this book, and will read the next one.
Happy Reading,
Rebecca

A delightful story involving strange happenings that are disturbing to all involved. But Allegra Fairweather, paranormal investigator, seems to thrive on issues of oddity. Except when her family is involved. After Allegra’s real father went missing many years earlier and was considered dead, her mother remarried Steven Richard Hampton, XXXII. Her sister Lily married Steven Junior. The Hamptons seem to be targets of the supernatural and Allegra must figure who and why and then try and stop them before all the Hamptons end up dead.

On more than one occasion, Allegra required the help of her guardian angel, Casper. While the name seems a trifle immature, the novel sizzles with action as Allegra races to stop a witch who is hell-bent on getting revenge on the Hampton family.

Well written and an enjoyable story. This is a great beach read for the summer.

A paranormal investigator, a good mystery, an sidekick angel called Casper who has gone MIA. Now, if that is not something you’re looking for in a fantasy fiction, I don’t know what else you’re looking for.

South of Salem is an intriguing story with dynamic, spunky and memorable character that you can never get out of your head. And if you’re looking for a good read that will not only thrill you but gives you some sense of adventure, then this book is just what you need.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I receive an ARC of this book from Carina Press via Netgalley. I was not not compensated in any ways for writing this review and I was not required to write a positive review for it.

South of Salem by Janni Nell is a paranormal mystery with strong aspects of family conflict and a dash of frustrated romance thrown in for good measure. This e-book is scheduled for release on May 30 2011. It is the second book in the Allegra Fairweather series, but stands up well on its own. I had not ready the previous book, and felt that I did not miss anything. However, I do plan on going back to read the first one, llegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator, simply because I enjoyed this book so much.

I have to admit, I was not sure I would like this book after the first chapter. The story grows in intensity as it progresses and by the end you can not put it down. This book had alot of humor and sadness which kept you guessing what would happen next. It did seem to go off at times but recovered before loosing my interest. I would recommend this book for those who like suspense type books.

The story was thrilling and more then held my interest, I enjoyed the relationship between Allegra and Casper and Allegra and her family. Would I recommend this book....... Yes to anyone who likes some humour in their books especially unintentional humour.
