Love's True Second Chance: A True Love Story

Rate this book
The following is a true story; love and heartache in high school, the feelings of anger, curiosity through the years, and finally a reuniting.
At forty-nine, I’ve suffered a wide variety of ups and downs, emotional highs and lows. I thought I’d experienced every feeling imaginable. What Debbie and I shared in the short seven months God allowed us together were beyond my wildest dreams. We were about to get an education in how deeply two people can love.

Join Debbie and I, by getting a copy today, as we reconcile the pain and hurt from the past and embark on the love we both so desperately sought through the years.

What ever happened to your first love? How did their lives turn out? Do they ever think about the wonderful times we spent together? Those care-free days when the only thing that really mattered was walking hand in hand on long walks or hanging out with friends at the arcade. Do they remember the first date and the first kiss? Do they still remember us and what would happen if we were ever saw each other again? Would the old feelings of the past be reignited, or would it be a simple hello, how have you been and we part paths again?

I always wondered how her life turned out. Through the years a business card would be left in a mailbox with no return call, letter or email. I guess the memories would be just that, memories. But in December of 2008, it was worth one more shot. One more attempt to make contact with the one girl whose memory lingered. The one girl, who no matter how far I traveled or how hard I tried to suppress the thoughts of the past, was always just under the surface waiting to reawaken. One more time, one more attempt, just one more time, and if nothing happens, let her memories fade; never to surface again.

It has been two weeks since the card was dropped off. Well, we gave it our best shot. We tried one more time and since there has been no contact, her memory is starting to fade. I take our prom picture out of my wallet and place it in a small box with all of the remaining reminders of our love from so long ago. The phone rings. Must be someone with more bad news about why they can't deliver the materials ordered. "This is Jeff"(what do you want!), "This is Debbie." My response was cold and quick, "And?" A very long pause, "Jeff.....this.....is.... Debbie." I slowly remove both feet from my mouth. It is her! The long lost connection has been made. Now what?

Join us for the most intense seven month "true love" one could ever imagine. Travel back to high school when life was so easy, so care-free and the word worry didn't exist. The chance meetings at college that at times were better forgotten. To present day when we are both trying to figure out if the feelings from the past should remain in the past or is there still something there; unfinished business. There is plenty of time (?) to figure it all out.

I spent twenty-five years in the wonderful world of road construction. Back surgery in 2010 put the skids on that career. My body couldn’t handle the rigors of twelve to sixteen hour days, six to seven days a week. As I convalesced, licking my wounds, I wondered what to do next. Not being out in the sun getting baked, or dodging traffic, was going to be a hard act to follow. Seriously, what else did I know? An article in the Dallas Morning News caught my eye. It was about being a professional speaker. Hmm. That sounds interesting. Becoming mobile again, I took a seat in front of the blank monitor, pondering what to write. Let’s start with something we know—my life.
The first work was titled “God’s Plan: A Glimpse Into One’s Life.” I re-titled it six months later to “Why Did Everything Happen?” I looked back at the last twenty-five years and how the death of my partner, father and true love affected my life. I was amazed at the revelations. Since then, I’ve moved on to write in several different genres. Some say I should change my name when diverting from the path. Well, right or wrong, I’m sticking with my name. The current works range from the memoir of my one true love: Debbie Beck—RIP 7-20-2009—Love’s True Second Chance, an alternative historical perspective of Vampires and WWII—Occupation, a newly released Sci-Fi time travel adventure,—Gateway: Pioche. If that isn’t enough, how about two Baseball Coaching Manuals?

I currently live in the DFW area, spending time with my daughter, her girls and my oldest son. When I was in construction, I never had, or took the time to enjoy what surrounded me: love, family and friends. My true love, Debbie and her girls reminded me what was important in life; “we work to live, not live to work.”

description

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Love’s True Second Chance by Jeff Dawson is a memoir and love story between the author, Jeff and his first love, Debbie. Jeff and Debbie start dating in high school and once they get together, it seems like they will stay together forever. However, mostly due to the fact that Jeff leaves for college, Jeff and Debbie break up like most teenage couples do. Their break up literally breaks Jeff’s heart and it affects all of his relationships from there out. Years go by after they’ve split apart and yet Jeff can’t stop thinking about his love for Debbie. He is scared that he will never be able to love another woman as much as he loves her.

Well, after going 30 years of having no contact with each other, Debbie calls Jeffs one day out of the blue. She confesses that she still thinks about him even after all those years of being apart. They decide to meet up and it is obvious that both Jeff and Debbie’s life have changed since high school. Jeff has a son and is single. Debbie has two daughters, is single, and has had breast cancer. Although Jeff and Debbie have spent a long time away from each other, they both quickly discover that they have an unconditional love for one another that could never be replaced. Will Jeff and Debbie be able to stay together and live out their happily ever after?

Love’s True Second Chance is a poignant, brave story of a man’s never-ending love for his soulmate. Although I don’t know Jeff or Debbie personally, just by reading their story I can automatically tell they were made to compliment each other. The way they ended up is both warm and heartbreaking at the same time. Jeff’s commentary on his life is funny, happy and at some points, touching. I loved reading about when Jeff started to warm up to Debbie and her daughters, noting that he was always supposed to be apart of their family. I truly believe the love that Debbie and Jeff share is the type of love that you only find once in a lifetime, and I really enjoyed knowing that everything they had did not just end in high school. Sadly, that is how it goes for most couples, but Jeff and Debbie prove that they have something much more meaningful between them. Jeff is there for Debbie in so many ways, and of course by the end of the book I was crying. I don’t want to spoil the ending but I got very emotional knowing that a part of their story ends abruptly. But by writing this book, Jeff proves that their love story can and will live on forever.

I enjoyed reading this book. Being a quick read, Jeff Dawson’s writing flows well and is interesting. I believe his style of writing is different and sticks with you which I think makes a powerful impact on this book. He did have a great story to work with in the first place but the hard-hitting emotions within his writing is what really makes the story come alive. However, there were some grammar issues throughout, such as the point of view switching from first to third without any sort of warning. Although this was distracting for me at times, it did not take my attention away from this beautiful story. There was also some repetition of ideas at the novel’s end that I did not think were necessary but there were some great, unique components that ultimately made up for it. I really enjoyed looking at Debbie’s playlist, extra notes written by Jeff, and even notes written by their friends. I recommend this book to any married couple, or anyone who knows someone who has or has had cancer. Jeff’s story with Debbie teaches you that despite the amount of distance or time, if you are meant to be with someone, you will eventually find your way back to each other.

I knew this book was going to be sad and let me say, oh my gosh, the first chapter had me sobbing. I absolutely love, LOVE, how the author wrote this story, starting with the saddest part of his one true love’s passing. Then he traveled back and told the story of their love, the great times, the not so great times, everything from high school through divorces, and finally the devastating end of it all. As he took me through his high school experiences, while a decade or more than when I went through high school, it was such a familiar experience. Every part of this book is relatable, whether or not a person has been forced to deal with cancer. I spent from chapter 2 to almost the end smiling, laughing, shaking my head at the silliness of teen love and how fragile the emotions can be. I was euphoric when they found their way back together, even knowing it would not last, it was beautiful. I was left with a profound sense of hope, faith, and renewed attitude to remember to enjoy life and love as it comes to me. I was very happy to hear one of the girls’ thoughts that she included. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good romance or a tear jerker.
On a personal note, Mr. Dawson, thank you for sharing your story. It has touched my heart but also my soul. Through stories such as yours, I find more of my faith and belief in the afterlife.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

I have a weakness for second chance love. Who hasn’t daydreamed about a second chance to say the words you never had the courage for, to correct all the past wrongs? Part memoir and part love story, this book is a bittersweet, authentic, and honest peek behind the curtain. You don’t often get to read about a courtship from a man’s perspective. It was sweet to hear about Jeff and Debbie’s early romance, funny even.

I was really moved at the tenderness and compassion Jeff and Debbie had for each other when got back together, after decades of living, the good and the bad of it, and still found that they were in love. Blended families can be rocky at the start, no matter how they come together, and the trial and error of how Debbie’s daughters took to Jeff was sweet and touching and funny. I couldn’t help but cringe a little, having been in a similar situation myself. This book is a loving and honest tribute to a lifelong romance.

Wow...just WOW! A very touching true story about true love and second chances. I cried when Debbie found out her cancer was back. I had gone through breast cancer starting in 06 one side and found in the other couple months later in 07. I was lucky, two lumpectomies and clean lymph nodes left me with some ugly scars and mishapened breasts. My husband of 35 years stood by me through shock/anger and surgeries/treatments. Debbie and Jeff were blessed to have her last 7 months together after 30 years apart. Tulsa/McAlester/Dallas was a nice little surprise being the background of the story as I live in OK. A story with twist and turns and you better have a tissue handy...

What a wonderful loving story. Even knowing how the story was going to end I still wanted to keep reading. I can not imagine the heartache Jeff went through, not only living the story but then putting it into words. Everyone needs to have this type of love at least once in their life. I have a feeling Debbie is looking down on Jeff with so much pride and I doubt that she is saying "Stupid Stupid Man."

Love's True Second Chance: A True Love Story is a truly remarkable love story that explores the beauty and the depth of this very complex emotion. The story is inspired by the author's own life. The protagonist Jeff in the book makes the story more vivid for the readers as though it is happening in real time.

I went through a roller coaster ride of emotions as I was reading this extraordinary book. The writing style is truly remarkable and one that I had never seen before. The author finds a way to make his story feel personal to the readers, so much so that I could relate with his moments of happiness and sorrow as if they were my own.

This story is about loving and losing and starting a fresh. It is a testament to continuity of life even in death and a reminder to all of us that love doesn't end even if life might.

Real Life Love Story Reminding You Love and Family Is Important:

Phew! Get the tissues and keep them by your side when reading this real life love story. From the beginning, author Jeff Dawson, tells readers how this story ends, but strangely that only lures you into wanting to know his tale about this "Second Chance" at love. This book proves true love can become a reality in life, it just takes real commitment to make it work.

Now, what sets this book apart from a contemporary romance book is the way the book is written. The story is told from Jeff's own thoughts in a reminiscing manner, as if he were sitting there, telling you his life's tale about his love affair with his soul-mate Debbie.

Jeff and Debbie meet in high school in 1977. Their lives are the cute classic teenage relationship until it changes when Jeff graduates and goes to college, while Debbie has one more year left at school. Their story is by no means cliché from that point onward, and I won't spoil any parts, but.... life happens, rash words are said and decisions are done, so it isn't till 30 years later that the two reconnect. It's the reunion part of the story that is the most captivating, heartwarming, and ultimately heartbreaking as Jeff and Debbie reconcile the past, live in the present, and pray for a possible future.

Overall, I can't say the book is a typical romance story because it's not. No, this book is a true story and with that comes a depth to the circumstances in this retelling of Jeff and Debbie's love that is hard to really describe. Real love is unconditional and when you truly love another, you will do anything and be there for them no matter what. Jeff just honestly tells of his time with Debbie and it's real, not fiction. A reader can walk away from this book with the advice of knowing love is real and family is what matters most.

I am sure you can remember your first love. Perhaps it was in high school, college or even earlier than that. One thing is for certain, we never forget our first love. Jeff Dawson shares a unique personal memoir with us in Love's True Second Chances, where he tells the story of his first love, Debbie. In all romance stories, we know that two people will fall madly in love and get married to hopefully live happily ever after, but this is not the case in this one.

Jeff opens the book with a poignant poem that outlines the lives of Jeff and Debbie throughout the years culminating in the following chapter where he watches her life slowly slip away to the effects of cancer. Not exactly the way fairy tales open, but this is no fairy tale. This is the true life love story of the two who met in high school and found the one perfect love. Through a series of events they eventually break up as Jeff heads off to college with a broken heart.. It will be thirty years later before the two reconnect again and they wonder if they love they felt in high school is still there after all this time. One thing is definitely true in life, that true love never dies.

I received Love's True Second Chance compliments of Jeff Dawson for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation other than a complimentary copy of the book. It is a sad story, because the reader ultimately knows where it ends, but what a great and lasting legacy Jeff leaves to his children and Debbie's of the love the two of them shared from it's humble beginnings. It is always the questions children will ask later in life of their parents, who was their first love, how did they meet, what happened to that person, and in this book, Jeff shares his side of the love story, because death claimed Debbie before she could share hers. Truly an unforgettable story of true love that found a second chance and one I would rate a 4 out of 5 stars.

As I write this, I am still overcome by so much emotion from this story. First it needs to be said that this is a true story and the first non-fiction of its kind that I have reviewed. Secondly, I just want to take a moment to thank Jeff for allowing us a peek into the most significant part of his life. He opened his heart and soul so that the rest of us could see the love that he and Debbie shared.

With that being said, this is so much more than just a love story. This is one of friendship, love, pain, growth, goodbyes, grief, longing and of course, second chances. So often, so many of us go through life havign never found our true second half, let alone find it twice. When I reached the part of the book where Debbie breaks up with Jeff, and for the life of him, he doesn't know why, before he revealed the reason, I already knew. She didn't want to hold him back from having a chance to live his life when he left for college, and I could totally understand that. I can almost picture him laughing at that because he makes so many references to being a stupid teenage boy with no common sense. You weren't stupid Jeff. You were just being a typical teenage guy.

I truly did enjoy this book and I couldn't put it down. I finished it in just under a day and a half. I highly recommend Love's True Second Chance. As I said, it is so much more than just a love story.

Thank you again Jeff, for allowing me to see such an intimate part of your life. And I believe that Debbie is looking down on you with a huge smile, thinking "Yep, that's my man!", with utmost pride.

*This Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*

This was a difficult book for me to rate and eventually I settled on 3 1/2 stars (marked up to 4)

The premise is definitely one I feel that a lot of people will be able to relate to and I hope that it was therapeutic for the author to share his story of love, loss, and the struggles and obstacles faced along the way.

The main issue for me were the pictures scattered throughout. I feel that they interrupted the flow of the story and didn't add to what you were reading at the points they were placed. With many memoirs you will find a section in the middle (or at the end) with chronologically placed photo's with a brief explanation. That I think may have helped.

There is a lot of substance to this piece but the writing style didn't quite click for me. For the most part though the strong emotional input was enough to keep you reading and as I said at the beginning I am sure that many people will be able to relate.

V""V

***Note just for the goodreads review ... I have spoken to the author about the current synopsis on here at the time the review was written. The synopsis on amazon (Click here to see it http://tinyurl.com/kdy4cvh )is far more appropriate for this book in my opinion and I have suggested that the author switches it***

I received a copy of Love’s True Second Chance in exchange for an honest review. Love’s True Second Chance is a true story of love lost and found, heartbreak and humor, and the miracle of soulmates.

Jeff Dawson chose to share his story of second chances with the world, and I am glad he did. He manages to show the real love he had for Debbie, both at the beginning and at the end. I was touched by his willingness to do what was needed when she needed him most.

I like the fact that the book reads as if Jeff is talking to you. It wasn’t forced or fake. The pictures included in the book make everyone come alive, and you get a better feel for the story.

I am giving this four stars because the grammar was inconsistent throughout. There is a third person sentence, followed by first, and then back to third. It didn’t take away from the story that much, but it was a little jarring to see the switch.

Overall, I’m glad I read this book. Jeff manages to balance the heartbreak with humorous memories. It’s nice to know that people can manage to laugh and love in the midst of tragedy. My heart hurts for the loss Jeff, Jessica, and Amanda had to endure. I was glad to know Jeff had found peace at the end of the book.

I would recommend this for anyone wanting a quick, heartfelt story to read.

Before we start I’d like to say a massive THANK YOU to Jeff for letting me review his book. I am honoured to have taken this journey with you and cried, well sobbed in fact, along the way. So please have tissues ready!!

I will admit I was very close to telling Jeff that I couldn’t review his book, not because it was badly written but because the subject is very close to my heart (my god I’m even crying writing this review!)

This book is about Jeff and his one true love, Debbie. The sweetest love story made even more sepcial because it is real. How they met, loved and lost each other only to find each other again 30 year later. It’s an emotional roll-a-coaster that will have you crying, laughing and cursing Jeff at some of his stupid moments (sorry Jeff)

I’m so glad a “manned up” and read Jeff’s book. This story will stay with me forever……I don’t want to give too much away other than you ALL need to read this book.

An emotional but very well deserved 5 golden apples for the quote “stubborn son-of-a-bitch” loved that bit!!

This beautiful book about love and redemption is guaranteed to warm your heart. I enjoyed this true story about high school sweethearts who had a difficult break-up, but were brought together thirty years later in heartwarming yet tragic circumstances. This author describes sweet anecdotes about the time he spent with the love of his life during their high school years, and the experiences they shared while she was fighting to stay alive. It’s refreshing to read about how people help each other during times of tragedy, and how love really does conquer all.

The author has a great sense of humor. I enjoyed his deadpan jokes throughout the book. Jeff Dawson’s writing style is perfect in this book because the reader feels like he/she is sitting down with Dawson and hearing his tale firsthand. There are funny moments in this book that made me chuckle, and there were times when I found myself tearing up. If you’re a fan of real life love stories, then I highly recommend that you read Love’s True Second Chance.

Jeff Dawson has written numerous books within a wide range of genres from non fiction self-help to the world of science fiction and horror.
'Love's True Second Chance' is a true story of an emotional and intense stage of battling highs and lows. One of deep seated anger, grief, and belonging.
A compelling realization that love really does conquer all. A forgiving story that relates to most of us and the meaning of true love through an extremely personalized portrayal of the authors (not so smooth sailing) life.

It will leave you laughing, cry, and with moments of full despair as we relive his experiences as our own through these wondrous pages of thought provoking sequence.

An emotional roller coaster of twists and turns into a heart-felt ending that gives us 'Love's True Second Chance'.

Reading this book was more like sitting with Mr. Dawson and listening to him tell the story of his one true love. At times I felt like anecdotes would just pop into his head and he had to tell them before he forgot, much as one does when having a conversation. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book and I think it really brings readers in closer.

Jeff pours his emotions onto the page with ease, making the story an honest look back at the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful aspects of his relationship with Debbie and others who are, and who are to become, close to him. It's heart-wrenching and uplifting all at once and a wonderful read. Thank you for sharing your story of love and hope!

This story is the epitome of "true love waits." After a high school romance that didn't last, it was thirty years before Jeff and Debbie saw each other again. And then, when they finally found one another, their time was cut short by the recurrence of Debbie's cancer.

I laughed and cried time again as I read through this story. Jeff's interactions with Debbie's young daughters were a particular source of humor. They obviously learned a great deal from him, and developed an affection for him as well.

As a breast cancer survivor, this story touched my heart more than I can say. I am so glad that Jeff chose to share this love story with the world.

This was a very touching book in the emotions portrayed both when Jeff and Debbie were teenagers, when they went their separate ways and when they rekindled their love three decades later.

It shows that true love does abide and accepts another person wholeheartedly, regardless of appearance, longevity of life and the challenges which are brought into a relationship as a result of terminal illness.

Jeff and Debbie were blessed with a love that withstood every test thrown their way. From 30 years of separation, to a terminal illness, even to death itself, their love still lives on. A wonderful testament to the power of love!

The author, Jeff Dawson, has written a poignant tale of love. The chance to go back in time to find your high school sweetheart. Author Jeff Dawson writes from a place deep within himself. The scenes transition smoothly and seamlessly. You live his life from the beginning to the heart-wrenching end. The characters have a depth that only come from real life. He has brilliantly introduced and brought life to the characters for the reader.

The book was delightful to read. There were all of life's moments -- unspeakable joy, laughter, heartache, and finally an end. Author Jeff Dawson has written a beautiful story that everyone should read.

Jeff Dawson has mastered how to write a true life story and bring it to life with words. While reading this book I could feel my emotions as he chronicles about a mom whom died, with permission from the daughters, and brings to life cherished memories. The author did date Debbie and had the normal ups and downs, but it ended. I believe things happen for a reason, and it's so sweet to think that he wrote of this story to benefit others. This is a wonderful tribute to a family that needed closure and walking down memory lane helped Jeff as well. I have lost my mom at age 5, and wish someone would have written a book like this one. Loves True Second Chance by Jeff Dawson is a story about coming home again. Dawson's heart was never able to let go of Debbie. Years later, he reconnects with the love of his life. Although thirty years had passed, they were able to fall in love all over again. They only had seven short months together before fate stepped in, but through his poignant writing, we know these were the best months of his life. This story is gut-wrenching emotional. You will laugh, and you will cry as you share his journey of unconditional love. It reminded me of Garth Brooks song "The Dance." Yes, the journey was painful but it was worth every tear. I give this book 4.5 stars and a stock in Kleenex.

This book made me cry, laugh, and several other emotions in between. It kept me reading and reading until I couldn't read any more. Part of the reason may be that I felt to some degree I could relate with what the author was saying.

If you are a child of the 1970s as well as have loved and lost someone, you might want to read this one. Be forewarned, you may want to have a hanky handy.

This is a very touching story of love and loss that had me experiencing a roller coaster of emotions. Anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer will connect with this and empathize with the author. I enjoyed reading about undying love from a male point-of-view and the story of his relationship with Debbie's girls was also super touching.

I give it four stars because I found the sudden tense changes jarring and occasional characters and circumstances introduced weren't explained.

Love's True Second Chance is a lyrical letter of love that is deeply moving, oddly gripping and had me well up in tears on more than one occasion. It is, in many ways, a boy meets girl tale - but there is a gap in time that makes the reuniting more poignant and an evolution of the story that for me was unique. You occasionally see the phrase: written from the heart. Jeff Dawson's book is the first I have read where I can say this is completely true.

Bittersweet

To be high school sweethearts and not truly get over each other throughout the years. And to be given a second chance only to have it cut off by cancer. What an awesome story of love and family.

A sweet testament to one mans love, for a lady that passed way to young.

Love’s True Second Chance by Jeff Dawson is a biographical account of teenage love that ends in heartbreak only to be rekindled decades later after the lovers have experienced disappointment and tragedy. This reunion offers a kind of salvation at a time in their lives when they most need it. But like all temporal salvation, it cannot last forever and has to be embraced while it exists. The couple, Jeff and Debbie, understands this and make the most of their time together.

This was an easy read that kept my attention. Though unpolished and in need of some serious editing, the writing style is relaxed and almost conversational, and that adds to the intimacy of the story, almost like you’re talking to a friend. Likewise, the two main characters say and do annoying things, but that’s just part of being human and adds to the honesty of the story. If you like real life love stories and interesting biographies, I think you’ll like this book, as I did.
