As the author, I'm biased of course. But I've read nearly every book I can find on the subject of hearing God, and the only one I can recommend besides this one is "Hearing God" by Dallas Willard. Most of these books fall into one of three categories: (1) dry and not much help actually connecting with God; (2) hearing very weird things from God; (3) trying to get God to direct all our decisions (should I eat at Red Lobster or Outback?). I wanted to write something that would not only describe what it is like to have conversations with God, but as much as possible, mentor the reader in the process. I think I succeeded at least in part, and our feedback has been encouraging in this regard.

You'd be hard put to find a subject matter more difficult to express in words than "hearing from God." Takle has, however, achieved it. Common questions and fears are addressed, common misunderstandings about the nature of God (that would keep people from wanting to hear from him) and much clear and solid advice is given. Takle has obviously spent many years engaging with God and helping people do likewise... ordinary people, not spiritual superstars or uniquely gifted people.
Thank you Mr. Takle for a gem of a book -- well written, well organized and obviously intended to encourage and give life.

Finally - practical, step-by-step mentoring on how to hear from God!

This definitely isn't a book you just read once; this is a resource that you and I will be referring back to you again and again for years to come.

The author, my good friend David Takle, has lovingly poured out his heart into these pages to help people who sincerely want to hear from God and grow in their relationship with him. I love how practical this book is. I especially like the detailed examples of real life experiences, taking us step-by-step through real ways that people engage with God. Also the exercises at the end of each chapter are something to go back and practice over and over.

If you want to go deeper with God, then this book should definitely be on your shelf. Many Christians do not know the richness that can come from a constant, dynamic relationship with the Jesus, or they don't feel that they are able to attain that "level" that select Christians or pastors throughout history have. But this is a wonderful gift from God available for all Believers. Like all valuable abilities or skills, it takes time and effort to become good at it. It doesn't just happen, it really takes a heart and a desire for God, which his exactly what He wants us to have. This book will be great as a coach for developing these skills.

I haven't gone through it all yet; that is just so much good and deep stuff here that this will be one that I keep within close range to grab and use as a resource whenever I want to connect more deeply with the Lord.

It took me an unusually long time to finish this book but that's because I was savouring it, bit by bit. In many ways it was encouraging because I've never been too sure if the 'voice of God' I hear is abnormal or in some way deficient. So reassuring to know that the impressions, inklings and interesting wordings that I receive are quite common.

There were many reflections I found both thought-provoking and comforting. Perhaps the one most personally impacting was on page 34 - Overflowing Cup in connection with Psalm 23. Like many people of western society, I have been troubled in the past by what I like to term an achariyth spirit - one that 'follows after' to undo the good I do. (I talk about this in God's Poetry: The Identity and Destiny Encoded In Your Name.) Although I had dealt with this some years back, I realised in reading this section that I no longer expected to be followed by anything. However, I should expect to be followed by Goodness and Mercy.

It was such a huge revelation that I stopped in my tracks for weeks while I worked through the ramifications of it. Only then did I go on to the rest of this superb book. A huge thanks to David Takle for writing it and to my friend Lisa for recommending it.

Super creepy book cover, but a solid book that's been heavily influenced by Dallas Willard.
