Alfred Bertram Guthrie, Jr. was an American novelist, screenwriter, historian, and literary historian who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction during 1950 for his novel The Way West.

After working 22 years as a news reporter and editor for the Lexington Leader, Guthrie wrote his first novel.

Ηe was able to quit his reporting job after the publication of the novels The Big Sky and The Way West (1950 Pulitzer Prize).

Guthrie died during 1991, at age 90, at his ranch near Choteau.

Tredici ditches del Montana



Leggere A.B. Guthrie è un piacere a lento rilascio, e anche in questo si è rivelato una piccola sorpresa.
Volevo leggerlo già da un po', come succede a quei nomi che cominciano a ricorrere nella mente senza che se ne sappia bene il perché: vuoi perché altri lo stanno leggendo, vuoi perché il traduttore lo hai letto e seguito altrove, vuoi perché il fascino delle edizioni è tale da volerti fare acquistare tutti i libri in catalogo per il solo piacere di poterli toccare e guardare dal vivo.
Ma non ne sapevo davvero nulla, tanto che ho anche pensato che fosse il Guthrie più famoso, Woody, il folksinger (ma anche cantante e scrittore, quello raccontato nello struggente Questa terra è la mia terra), o uno dei suoi eredi.
Nemmeno parente, invece, mi hanno detto in fiera allo stand Mattioli, e così (sbagliando ancora), ho afferrato questo, pensando a una lettura più breve (rispetto alle altre che apparivano agli occhi più corpose) con cui iniziare a fare la conoscenza di Guthrie, senza sapere che è un autore noto per i suoi romanzi (dal quale il cinema ha attinto a piene mani, come nel caso di Il grande cielo), o che è stato vincitore del premio Pulitzer con Il sentiero del west, e che in questo caso si trattava di inusuali (inusuali rispetto alla sua produzione) racconti.
Sono stata un po' delusa, quindi, nell'accorgermene, perché pensavo a un romanzo breve; ma, come ho scritto all'inizio, i racconti di Guthrie si sono rivelati un piacere a lento rilascio, che consiglio di leggere uno dietro all'altro, senza diluire eccessivamente la lettura, per permettere alle sue storie dell'ovest, di cacciatori e di saloon, di Piedi Neri e di cowboy, di uomini e donne di frontiera (e di Moon Dance, che è il suo topos non solo letterario) di distillare lentamente, ma progressivamente, dentro il lettore.
Tredici storie per assorbirne la descrizione realistica - che spazia dai boschi alla cittadina mainstreet-scuola-e-saloon, dai cowboy ai cacciatori di pelli ai pionieri ai pellerossa - la rudezza mai gratuita, l'imprevedibile ironia, la capacità di creare in maniera del tutto inattesa piccoli lampi e di accendere, proprio lì, dove c'era tensione, o stupore, o un sopracciglio sollevato, un sorriso, un ghigno, un... toh, ma guarda.

[edit] Dimenticavo: un piccolissimo, lieve indizio, mi ha fatto pensare, credere, capire, che Thomas Savage, autore dello splendido Il Potere del Cane (il mio cinque stelle 2017) potesse essere un attento e appassionato lettore di Guthrie.
Chissà, farò le mie solite ricerche virtuali, ma nel frattempo coltivo questa intuizione come se fosse vera.

A Getup la maggior parte delle persone, gli uomini in ogni caso, bevono i ditches, che è l'abbreviazione di ditchwater higballs, che altro non è che il nome del whisky allungato con acqua di rubinetto.

Definitely not Louis L'Amour sorts of stories. They're gritty & full of men's frailties as well as bravery & all sorts of real situations. A couple are funny, some sad, & a couple are downright chilling. All are short & to the point, something I really appreciate in a short story.

I searched, but couldn't find a table of contents for this. The introduction was well done & is worth listening to as are all the stories - 13 I believe. They were all published in the 1950s. The take place from the early 1800s, such as his take on Colter's Run (One of the best I've read.) to Prohibition times. The characters just pop off the page. I could almost smell one of them.

Very well narrated & highly recommended.

I'll give this one 3 stars because of Adam Verner's narration. I was disappointed in most of the short stories enjoying only a couple.

Audio a pleasant collection of stories that are place about a century ago in rural America.
I recommend this to readers who know that short stories are not for those who don't like to read, but rather for those who have active minds that can appreciate something without the minute details.

I checked this book out at the library because I wanted to read some of A.B. Guthrie's work. He's from Montana and so am I.

The is a good collection of short stories. I particularly like the one about the drunk car crash. Very good characterization, psychology, and the human condition.

I didn't finish all the book before I brought it back, just about 6 stories...up to page 70.

I have read novels by this author and enjoyed them. I found the thirteen short stories in this collection just as good as the full length novels and great way to feel like you're back in the old west.

This book was fun because I learned about stories Bud had heard or witnessed. In his autobiography I learned more about some of these stories. Overall if you want to read short stories this is a good book.

The Big Sky by the author was recommended by a friend. While I didn't find it at the bookstore, I found The Big It. This collection is essentially character pieces, brief snippets of life in rural Montana in different decades, from old west to the early 20th century.

I read "The Bargain" in eighth-grade English and it opened me up to the possibilities of short fiction. Reading it 25 years later brought back the punch and grit embedded in the story. Guthrie's tales center around the fictional town of Moon Dance near Montana's Rocky Mountain Front, and present the west without a hint of gloss or nostalgia.
