Becky has reached the point in her swimming lessons when she has stopped being a Frog and has moved up to be a Platypus. She has to go into the deep end, and she's not at all sure that she's ready for it. She wishes she could be a Frog for just a little while longer.
Ursula Dubosarsky is an award-winning author of numerous books for children and young adults. About The Golden Day, her first book with Candlewick Press, she says, "The little girls watch, wonder, respond, change, and grow — and then their childhood is gone, forever. This element of the story, I suppose, is at least partly autobiographical. But, as I say — all of our teachers come home safe and sound in the end." Ursula Dubosarsky lives in Australia.
Another Dubosarsky simple tale, about overcoming fear, and gaining courage to take the next step and move on to the next level. Simple and yet engaging tale.
This only takes an adult five minutes to read so it's perfect for a take-home book for beginning readers. The theme is overcoming your fears and it's a sweet little story about a kid having swimming lessons, and today's the day she has to venture into the deep end. Shortlisted for the 2011 CBCA Awards, but I don't think it's special enough to win.
