Celebrating America's favorite cityscapes, this series combines historic interest and contemporary beauty. Then and Now features fascinating archival photographs contrasted with specially commissioned, full-color images of the same scene today. A visual lesson in the historic changes of our greatest urban landscapes.
A collection of historical photographs, with new photos at the same approximate locations on the facing pages. Oddly, the locations are not always specified except by the name of the landmark, making the book frustrating to those not already familiar with every place. The captions range from the informative to the bland and commercial ("Recently named America's most livable city by Money Magazine, Portland enjoys a thriving economy, based in part on the many high-tech firms located in the nearby 'Silicon Forest'...") The book was published in 2001, so that at this point it would be better titled Portland Then and Thenner.
