A Girl Of Her Time

Vibrant Maureen Matthews has always been a 'deep one' and dreams of a life beyond the Potteries. Then, just like a scene from one of her beloved movies, she meets handsome, charming Trevor Mountford. He seems to be everything Maureen ever hoped for and when he asks her to marry him she has no hesitation in saying yes.

When married life doesn't turn out to be the ideal Maureen thought it was she starts to question both her life and her love. Then she meets Greg Barlow. He's completely different from what she thought she wanted - but everything she ever needed.

Can she put aside her past and finally find true happiness?

Did feel like not much happened, but it was an enjoyable read and I connected to the characters.

Although I read this book some years ago, I have just listened to it as an audiobook which throws an altogether different light on it. Hearing it narrated gives an added nuance to the local dialects of the Potteries, where most of the novel is set. Young Maureen Matthews has been brought up worshiping the film stars of the 1950s. When she meets handsome Trevor Mountford, she believes she has met the man of her dreams. Yet a youthful marriage finds her dreams and illusions shattered. Forced to flee from he husband, she meets ordinary-looking but kind and thoughtful Grey Barlow. But, as a divorced Catholic, how can she ever find happiness with Greg? Margaret Kaine has captured the spirit of the later 1950s/early 1960s with absolute accuracy (and I remember them well!). Her characters (apart from cold Trevor and his equally cold parents) are warm and totally believable.
