To study the women's fight for the vote through my book, "Women Win the Vote! 19 for the 19th Amendment," you can find a free, downloadable teachers guide on my website. Just click on the "For Teachers" link on the landing page. https://www.nancybkennedy.com//for-te...

In 2020, our country celebrated the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, and the franchise was no longer restricted to men.

My book, "Women Win the Vote! 19 for the 19th Amendment" (Norton Young Readers, 2020) celebrates this victory through the lives of 19 of the women who devoted themselves to this cause. Among them are women who are well known today, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, as well as lesser known woman like Mary Church Terrell and Adelina Otero-Warren.

The suffrage fight made many women outcasts in their families, their churches and among their friends. They gave their time, their money, their health and sometimes even their lives to the cause. They were mocked, sometimes mobbed, and in the end, some of them were jailed and subjected to the torture of force feeding. "It is worth sacrificing everything for," said Alice Paul, the founder of the National Woman's Party and organizer of protests outside the White House gates.

Pretty far below my personal reading level. Most of the stories in this anthology were 2-3 page magazine articles without much depth. But, there were a few very interesting and exciting stories. I skipped any stories that featured a female "chaplain", if which there were 2 or 3.

I'm a Navy Chaplain. I can vouch for the integrity of those who have written chapters in this book and for Ms. Kennedy's respectful and intriguing ability to draw out the stories of these Chaplains. The book is filled with life-changing lessons they've learned on the front lines of ministry and military service.

One of the stories features my father Chaplain COL (Ret.) Tim Carlson. Here's a link to further details of Chapter 35, he shared this at a Leadership Breakfast on Veterans Day in San Diego.

Miracles & Moments of Grace is a collection of stories from various Chaplains during the time-frame from the Vietnam War through the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. The stories are personal accounts covering a particular incident during the Chaplain's service, mostly during deployments. It was nice to read about the different ways Chaplains serve our service men and women. Many of the stories are truly inspirational though not all of them. Love of God and country is a most admirable trait of these men and women. One might think from the term "miracles" in the title that the book may come across as goofy at times, but I did not feel that was the case, as the stories in general carry a fairly serious tone. Highly recommend.

I thouroughly enjoyed reading about tough decisions, scary situations, and so many other things. These people are extrodinary in what they do to help our military personnel, as well as in their own lives!

A truly inspiring message told through short stories from military chaplains. A blessing to read and an honor to share.
