About the author

Jan Amos Komenský (also Johann Amos Comenius, John Amos Comenius, Iohannes Amos Comenius) was a Czech teacher, educator and writer. He served as the last bishop of Unity of the Brethren and became a religious refugee and one of the earliest champions of universal education, a concept eventually set forth in his book Didactica Magna. He is considered the father of modern education. He lived and worked in many different countries in Europe, including Sweden, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Transylvania, the Holy Roman Empire, England, the Netherlands and Royal Hungary.

"Didáctica Magna" de Comenius es una obra clásica que ha dejado una huella perdurable en la historia de la educación, siendo la base de la escuela tradicional. Sin embargo, a pesar de su importancia histórica, la relevancia contemporánea de este texto es limitada.

Una de las principales limitaciones de esta obra es su enfoque desactualizado y su perspectiva ultraconservadora, que dificultan la comprensión y la aplicación de sus ideas en el contexto educativo actual. Si bien es comprensible que la obra refleje las ideas y prácticas pedagógicas de su tiempo, la falta de actualización y adaptación a los avances modernos en educación la hace menos útil para los educadores y estudiantes de hoy en día.

Además, aunque el libro contiene algunas ideas valiosas sobre la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, muchos de sus conceptos son abstractos y poco prácticos. La obra carece de ejemplos concretos y los argumentos sólo se concentran en la imitación basándose mayormente en analogías con la naturaleza, lo que dificulta su relevancia y utilidad para los profesionales de la educación.

Otro aspecto a considerar es la estructura y organización del texto, que puede resultar confusa y fragmentada para el lector contemporáneo. La obra se presenta en forma de capitulos fragmentados, lo que dificulta la comprensión del conjunto de ideas y la conexión entre los diferentes temas tratados, sobre todo cuando Comenius repite mucho una sola idea.

En resumen, "Didáctica Magna" es una obra clásica que merece reconocimiento por su importancia histórica en el desarrollo de la pedagogía. Sin embargo, su relevancia contemporánea es limitada debido a su enfoque desactualizado, su falta de ejemplos prácticos y su estructura fragmentada. Por lo tanto, merece una evaluación de dos estrellas. Asimismo, es de notar su enfoque enteramente religioso y ultraconservador.

I was re-reading the analytic didactic, which is necessary reading along with the Great Didactic and the Pampaedia to gain something of an overall view of how Comenius' thinking about teaching and learning developed. The didactic itself is about half the book and well worth reading if a little dry compared to the other two 'didactics'. The lengthy introduction was informative but at times rather supercilious, apparently seeking opportunities to note things that the translator knew better than Comenius had managed to do 300 years earlier; I was not left with the sense that Jelinek loved Comenius very much in the end.

Komenska "Lielajā Didaktikā" meklējami pirmsākumi pedagoģijas zinātnei un skolas klašu sistēmai. Tomēr izlasot darbu, ir pārsteigums par vairākām citām tā laika (17.gs) atziņām, un rodas pārdomas par to, vai jebkad (jebkur) pedagoģijas sistēmā izdevās iekļaut ko vairāk (no Komenska idejām) par klašu sistēmu un vienlīdzīgu izglītību gan zēniem, gan meitenēm (kas, kā zināms, pārsteidzošā kārtā tika ņemts vērā krietni vēlāk). Prātoju, ka varbūt arī citas Komenska izvirzītās mācību atziņas tiks novērtētas vien vēlākā nākotnē... Līdz ar to nāk prātā doma, ka ne jau "sendienu izglītības" pieejas bija galīgi garām un jāvirzās līdzi laikam atmetot visu veco, nākot klajā ar pilnīgi jaunām metodēm utt., bet gan varbūt nepieciešams palūkoties atpakaļ laikā uz tām idejām, kas tika nepamanītas, vai bija tam laikam neiespējamas, vai pilnībā netika ņemtas vērā, līdz ar to praktiski nenonāca līdz tagadnei...*

Lasot Didaktiku nebiju pārsteigta par lielo uzsvaru uz reliģisko / tikumisku audzināšanu, tomēr pārsteigumu izraisīja lielais uzsvars uz dabu, kā paraugu skolas mācību procesos. Daudzkārt tiek doti piemēri no dabas, kas tiek salīdzināti ar skolas "nedabisko" vidi.
Piemēram –" (..) kokam laiku pa laikam vajadzīga atpūta. Tam vienmēr nav jāraisa pumpuri, jazied, jādod augļi; reizi pa reizei kokam vajag ļaut veidot sulu sevis paša nostiprināšanai.
[..] arī īsākos laika posmos kā prātam, tā miesai nepieciešama atpūta , lai nepieļautu kaut ko pretdabisku, dabai kaitīgu. " – vai, piemēram – " Vairākums skolotāju uzskata par vajadzīgu sēklas vietā stādīt stādu, bet spraudeņu vietā — koku: viņi skolēniem sniedz nevis pašus pamatus, bet uztiepj dažādu slēdzienu jūkli vai pat gatavus tekstus". Utml.

Jābilst, dabiski, ka ne visām viņa rakstītajām tēzēm piekrītu. Bet katrā ziņā, neraugoties uz nogurdinošo reliģisko dogmu atkārtojumiem, Didaktika radīja pārdomas un vieglu nostalģiju par aizgājušo skolas laiku un tā laika pēcgaršas vieglo rūgtumu.

* – Jau krietnu laiku atpakaļ tiku cauri pamatskolai & vidusskolai, tādēļ nezinu, kā ir šobrīd, varbūt jaunās mācību satura pārmaiņas Latvijā ir krietni pamainījušas mācību vidi..

Philosophe tchèque du 17 ème siècle, élevé dans la religion Hussite, Comenius est l'auteur de cet ouvrage, la grande didactique. Inspiré par un sentiment religieux sincère, Comenius propose un ensemble de réflexions visant à rien moins qu'enseigner tout à tout les enfants, sans distinction de sexe ni de classe sociale, attendu que l'homme est à l'image de Dieu, et qu'il doit pour s'approcher de son créateur ne pas négliger les lumières de l'instruction. Par une démarche très structurée et systématique, agrémentée de nombreux exemples tirés de la nature, il développe des idée de principe d'éducation visant à transmettre le savoir le plus utile de la manière la plus efficace, sans omettre l'édification morale chrétienne et sans jamais perdre de vue l'aspect pratique de la connaissance. Il serait l'inspirateur de la franc-maçonnerie, mais je n'ai pas encore trouvé de preuve décisive de cette hypothèse. Malgré les marques de son temps et certains excès religieux, ce livre fait naître le plus grand enthousiasme pour ce projet utile pour l'humanité, et pour son promoteur.

Edit: so this is listing as a review for the Great Didactic, but it’s intended to be a review of the Analytical Didactic.

Read for a college research project. Analytical didactic is fascinating, especially in comparison to Comenius’s Great Didactic. It’s all in the context of foreign language instruction, but his principles are applicable to any class. Jelinek’s summary has proved useful as there is no English version of the work he is summarizing. Some of his comments in the introduction showed that he isn’t working from the same basic assumptions that Comenius was, which makes him annoying to read.
