Can Fitzwilliam Darcy help his young cousin vindicate her father’s honor?

1826, Yorkshire Wolds. In this humorous and heartfelt short novel narrated by Colonel Fitzwilliam’s daughter, Sofia-Elisabete, the colonel takes her to fox hunts. A terrible accident occurs at the second hunt when the impetuous and spirited Sofia fakes a “view halloo” and sets the riders in the wrong direction so that she can save the fox. Lies spread, and the colonel is unjustly blamed for the tragic death that occurs. A key witness—Nimrod, the popular sports writer—has vanished. The colonel seeks Darcy’s help to find this journalist.

There is no greater friendship than between loyal cousins.

Sofia hasn’t seen this cousin since she was a child, but she recalls the happy Darcys of Pemberley. Fitzwilliam Darcy at forty-two still has that certain je ne sais quoi that had captivated her as a girl. But can Darcy make things right in a world where corruption abounds and where trouble and the fantastic keep happening whenever Sofia is near? Told against the backdrop of the sporting life, from the chase to the turf, from the ring to the links, My Cousin Darcy lays bare the secrets of a flawed and sensitive hero from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

My Cousin Darcy is a Pride and Prejudice sequel unlike any other, and I was charmed by it. Effervescent and gregarious Sofia-Elisabete is refreshing; she simply does not care what anybody thinks. She shares her tale in first-person narration with a bit of a stream-of-consciousness tone that draws the reader in close. Her lively relationship with her father Colonel Fitzwilliam is engaging, as are her interactions with their cousin Mr. Darcy. No staid drawing rooms or fancy-dress in ballrooms here. This is an active England. A sporting one! The historical background was clearly well-researched and well-drawn. And the poetic prose created an immersive setting, vividly described. This is a fanciful, and even mystical at times, story.

Another winner in the Sofia-Elisabete Stories series, I enjoyed how good the story was and how it fit with the rest of the series. I enjoyed the addition of Pride and Prejudice characters in this series, it worked well with the Sofia-Elisabete cast. I enjoyed how good this was written.

"“This controversy must be dealt with swiftly,” our cousin counseled us, “before misunderstandings become unqualified lies, before emotions overrule reason, before a gentleman’s reputation is ruined, before …” and his weighty incomplete thought hung on the air."

I enjoyed this book immensely! My Cousin Darcy with its wide array of sports of the time period from horse racing to golf to wrestling along with Sofia~Elisabete's current adventure makes this book a great read.
As a devoted Jane Austen fan, I appreciate how seamlessly the characters and places from Austen's books are woven into the fabric of Ms. Kobayashi's Sofia~Elisabete stories. The unique and delightful Sofia~Elisabete, along with suspenseful action, and the sporting life of her time make this a captivating read from beginning to end. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A very fun, clean light read. Enjoyed the bravery of the young lady, and the action, thoughts and sport. This young lady, who is Darcy’s cousin - she is actually Colonel Fitzwilliam’s daughter. She is very independent, and loves excitement, and going against the norms for the moment of her time.
LOL, she is an animal lover, and her father wants her to fox hunt, and later gets involved with horse racing, all being mainly a man’s world.

I recommend this for when you only have a short time to read.

The fourth in the Sofia-Elisabete Stories series, My Cousin Darcy was such a joy to get swept up in! Regency England is one of my most beloved eras to read and learn about.

In the throes of young love, married Sofie and Kitt are refreshingly charming yet modern free thinkers. They bring out the best in each other and make an excellent team. In a man's world, Sofie's views can sometimes shock others. When she opposes fox hunting not all share her views. The whimsical Mercury is a treasure. Sofie's cousin Darcy Fitzwilliam now has a family of his own which lends a fascinating perspective. More about his family, please! Golf links (pun intended) are fun, too.

Not only is the novel resplendent with glorious witticisms and rich historical detail but the vocabulary is delightful as well. You daren't skip a single word. Food descriptions in books always catch my eye! My sudden sweets craving must be forgiven.

Author Robin Elizabeth Kobayashi's map, historical notes, facts and true inspirations are beautifully written and informative.

Discovering new-to-me series gladdens my heart and I look forward to reading the previous three novels as well as whatever is in store next. Love how this ended!

This is an enjoyable tale that blends literature, sports, history, maybe a little fantasy and flare. I loved the character, Sophia-Elisabete, the Colonel and, of course, Cousin Darcy. There were some parts, mainly with the fox hunting, that I got a little confused about but in all, this was a fun book to sit and read at the end of the day. Thank you to BookSirens and the author for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I received a copy for free and these are my own opinions.

This book seems to have been well-researched and definitely gives the reader a sense of place and time. The writing style is a little difficult to get used to, but if you’re a regency fan, it’s very familiar.

I wasn’t overly fond of the first half of the book, and I think unless you’re a fan of horses or hunting, it could be a bit boring. It’s very detailed and the imagery is very clear, but it’s quite monotonous- almost too detail-heavy given that the first hunt isn’t really relevant to the plot.

I thought the author’s portrayal of Darcy was in keeping with Austen’s to begin with but as the book progressed I felt the character moved further and further away from the Darcy I know and love. I have to say she lost me at the point at which he wrestled a man in public. I cannot see Mr Darcy doing this, whatever the stakes. He almost didn’t marry Elizabeth because he thought her family were embarrassing at a private ball - so in what world would he get involved in a public fight?!! It was too far-fetched and extreme for me.

Overall it was well-written enough to keep me reading but the content just didn’t grab me in the way other Regency books have. It’s a risky move to borrow characters from such a powerhouse as Austen and I think you really have to do them justice and in this case, sadly, I just don’t think that’s been done. Even Colonel Fitzwilliam, who is only a minor character in Pride and Prejudice, seemed to me to have been altered beyond recognition. One caveat to this; I haven’t read the previous books in this series so I was coming in cold to the recurring characters, including the MC. This may have influenced my assessment of this book.

Robin Kobayshi again triumphs in this fast past novel set in Yorkshire Wolds in 1826. Her latest novel is narrated by Sofia Elisbete, the central character in Kobayshi's prior works. In My Cousin Darcy, Sofia-Elisabete's father, Colonel Fitzwilliam, is unjustly blamed for a sporting accident resulting in damage to his reputation and his family's belief that he is being held captive. Sofia-Elisabete enlists the aid of the Colonel's cousin, Fitzwilliam Darcy, to lead the family in the dramatic rescue of the Colonel. The author's vivid imagery takes the reader to fox hunts, alehouses, riding stables and a Scottish golf course in this captivating tale. Kobayshi's latest novel is a must read that will grab your attention through the fantastic and fun finish

My Cousin Darcy resumes the story of the most charming Sofia-Elisabete. Once the story gets going, you will become immersed in her magical world, which includes her Cousin Darcy, and you’ll be swept up in this unusual adventure. Who knew that fox hunting and golf could be so interesting? The author incorporates a colorful, historical background to the action, but ultimately the story is driven by Sofia. She’s older now but still spirited and fiercely loyal to those she loves. I love the relationship between her and her husband, Kitt. This novel is a little gem.

Having read the first 3 books of the Sofia-Elisabete Stories I was very curious to see where we would find Sofia and her relatives in this fourth book. The story starts shortly after the events of book 3 took place, so Sofia is still a very young lady despite the fact that she is already married. In this book we will follow her adventure with Mr. Darcy as they chase after the only witness that can prove her father’s innocence of a murder charge.

Just like in the first 3 books of the series, My Cousin Darcy is written in the magical realism style so reality starts to give way to fantasy and it becomes hard to differentiate reality from Sofia’s magical interpretation of it. This style is not as pronounced as in the author’s previous books and I believe that was a good choice because as Sofia becomes older this style becomes less charming, endearing and fitting. While this was a perfect style to adopt when Sofia was younger and innocent, I was pleased to see the author was more balanced in this installment as we see the main character as an imaginative but also responsible young lady. This was particularly visible in the protective manner she treated her father, and I really appreciated it.

I really liked revisiting these characters, even if the Colonel’s circumstances always make me a little sad, and it was also very interesting to see Darcy taking a supporting role in this type of story. I liked seeing his dedication towards the colonel and his curiosity towards Sofia’s magical mind. He may have seem a little out of character, but I believe that is perfectly understandable in the whimsical setting of this book.

Unlike previous installments, there aren’t many Portuguese references, which I have missed, but with the addition of Kit, we are now seeing a lot of Scottish references that may appeal to readers, especially those who dive into this story through the audiobook version.

My Cousin Darcy is a short, fast-paced novella full of intrigue and magical elements that can be read very quickly. I admit I wasn’t as engaged with it as I was with the previous books because the initial scenes with the fox hunts were not very appealing to me and seemed to drag a little. Also, even though the book has adventure in it, it didn’t have the feeling of a major journey as the previous books did, so I wasn’t as compelled to follow the story., but it was an enjoyable novella nonetheless.

My Cousin Darcy continues to reveal Robin Elizabeth Kobayashi unique writing style and I recommend it to those who love magical realism and want to dive into it with the characters of Pride and Prejudice.

My Cousin Darcy is a creative 1826 sporting novel that champions Jane Austen's character, Mr. Darcy, as a supporting character in this adventure to the main character, his energetic cousin Sofia-Elisabete. Sofia and her father, Colonel Fitzwilliam, enjoy a competitive banter around sporting events such as fox hunting, horse racing, and the like. When a wager between them goes wrong, a jovial running of the hounds turns rapidly into a suspected murder. Soon rumors lead to convictions that the Colonel must have been responsible for the unfortunate death despite his attempts to rebuttal. To vindicate her father's honor, Sofia begins a gallant search for the only witness present to prove her father's innocence, a proud sports journalist named Nimrod who vanished almost immediately following the hunting accident. Though Sofia is clever, the Colonel calls on his shrewd but often discordant cousin, Mr. Darcy, as a companion to help them track the journalist down. Mr. Darcy's character is further revealed through this story as both familiarly stoic, but decades since his proud and prejudice nature in Jane Austen's stories, a more father-like comforting presence in this story line.

Opinion:
Another great addition to the Sofia-Elisabete series, this is a story of humorous sporting mishaps and twists all along the way. The Jane Austen-like descriptive dialogue is entertaining and not overly tedious. Young adults who engage in sports may enjoy the descriptions of fox-hunting, horse racing, wrestling, golf, etc., and enjoy Sofia's competitive tussles with her father and Mr. Darcy. Overall, this is a book you will be able to picture in your mind as you read and feel invigorated by the variety of sporting adventures. The final chapters have a few unexpected turns to keep you enjoying the read all the way to the end. The author also does a masterful job combining her historical research with intelligent writing to build on the characters she is taking from Jane Austen's repertoire. In my opinion, this book is a great read for young adults who love Jane Austen and stories written during the time of the 19th century.

This review is for the audiobook!

Story Impressions –

A delightful tale blending Pride and Prejudice characters plus traditional Regency sporting jaunt and an unusual heroine. As with other JAFF tales, this reimagining is as pleasing to the ear as it is to my Regency heart. I found the plot believable and historically accurate. The author writes with an Austenesque flair. The story itself is addictive to listen to and before I knew it, hours ticked by. If you’re a P&P vagary fan, you’ll simply adore My Cousin Darcy. It’s one I will read again and again with pleasure.

Narrator’s overall voice –

Lucas Keen’s voice has an individuality all its own but when it employs the various character voices, it takes on each character with ease. I thoroughly adored his voice.

Does the narrator fit the characters?

Yes, Lucas Keen fits the characters, especially Sofia. I’m astonished at how well he evokes women. It’s not an easy thing to do. Well done.

Narrator’s reading style –

Lucas Keen has an informal reading style but with enough twists and turns to keep the listener mesmerized.

Narrator’s impact on reading experience –

Lucas Keen has an inherent ability to draw a listener/reader in without any effort. The scenes are so well narrated, that I had to stop what I was doing to concentrate on the story.

Narrator’s pacing –

Lucas Keen’s pacing is impeccable, blending historical fiction and mystery together without any effort.

Audiobook flow –

Lucas Keen lets the audiobook unfold naturally with plenty of dialogue, action, and intrigue.

What makes this audiobook unique –

Lucas Keen and Robin Kobayashi partner up again to bring readers/listeners one of the best historical fiction/Pride and Prejudice vagary audiobooks I’ve ever heard/read. Lucas Keen’s narration brings My Cousin Darcy to life, like a film. Brilliant from start to finish.

Would I recommend this audiobook –

YES! One-click this audiobook right now.

FORMAT: Audiobook
Star Rating: 5

‘A cleverly plotted, amusing ‘Pride and Prejudice’ novel enriched by a powerful performance from the talented narrator.’ The Wishing Shelf

REVIEW
I very much enjoyed this historical drama from the pen of Robin Elizabeth Kobayashi and narrated by Lucas Keen. Filled with exciting twists and turns, and lots of suspense, I suspect most fans of Pride and Prejudice will find a lot to enjoy here – particularly as the popular character, Mr. Darcy, has such a prominent role.
Sofia, Colonel Fitzwilliam’s daughter, is a wonderful character too. She’s tough, intelligent, a little ill-disciplined (or should I say wild) and always, it seems, on the look out for adventure. And she has so many! In this story, with its sporting theme, the one and only Mr. Darcy must find a way of saving Colonel Fitzwilliam. I must say, it’s a fun adventure, offering the reader an insight into fox hunting and other sports popular at that time. There’s also plenty of humour in the story and very little in the way of fancy frocks and posh balls!
In terms of the writing style, it’s excellent. There’s an ‘old worldy’ feel to it in terms of vocabulary, and the speech is spot on for the historical setting. But best of all is the narrator’s interpretation of the text. I loved his accent as it fits so perfectly in the Pride and Prejudice world. Very English, very proper and, dare I say it, a little bit sexy! Or possibly charming is a better word.
All in all, this is a truly wonderful historical novel filled with drama, charismatic characters and interesting dilemmas for the charming Mr. Darcy and the irrepressible Sofia to overcome. I see it’s the fourth book in the set; let’s hope there’s a number five on the way.

Ms. Kobayashi gives us another peek into the adventures of Sofia in this instalment of her own series as well as a sequel to Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice. Set in 1826, Sofia is a young married woman who holds fond memories of her cousin Fitzwilliam Darcy, and calls upon him to help extricate her father, Colonel Fitzwilliam, from a difficult situation. The colonel, suffering from forgetfulness, inadvertently became a murder suspect in the death of a fox hunter. Sofia and Darcy, who is also suffering from a bout of melancholy, set out to rescue him.

This is another delightful foray into the life and times of Sofia, a woman who should become everyone’s favorite heroine. She’s adventurous, brave, beguiling, and capable of charming her way through the most challenging plights. Darcy’s characteristic brooding provides the perfect foil for Sofia, as do the comedic escapades of Colonel Fitzwilliam, and even the antics of the foxes. The author artfully crafts the perfect setting in the Yorkshire Wolds to deliver this humorous and oftentimes touching installment of Sofia’s escapades while she sets the stage for what is sure to be an exciting follow-up.

Sublime Line: “My Cousin Darcy is a five-star, exciting, and humorous sequel featuring our favorite heroine, Sofia.”

3.5* - whimsical fun aplenty

This book is very different from others in the Pride and Prejudice variations genre, as are the earlier books in the series. They tell the story of an original character, Sofie-Elisabete who is the love-child of Colonel Fitzwilliam, Darcy's cousin.

The writing style is whimsical throughout and the pace is very fast drawing the reader along through fox hunts and dramatic rescues.

The Colonel himself is a rather diminished character having suffered from the impacts of war and a head injury, and the addictions to laudanum resulting from these. These have left him prone to forgetfulness and recklessness, often egged on by his daughter. Darcy has to step in to rescue him from his latest fiasco.

The writing is well edited and the language is rich. At times I found the language a little too rich, a bit like eating too much chocolate cake! The same could be said of the whimsy.

At times the plot was perhaps a little too modern and the character of Sofie-Elisabete was definitely on the modern side. I do wish the reader had made her a little older. Jane Austen herself makes it clear that marriage of a 15 year old is far from ideal and I wish this point had been taken into account.

"My Cousin Darcy" is a totally different version of Pride and Prejudice genre. Since it was my first time reading a book by this new (to me) author, it took me a little while to get into it, but then the book erupted with humor, misadventures, and so much more! There are several stories within this story, which finally picked up rhythm and flow, and Sofia and her outlook on life totally drew me. No matter where she went, what she did, adventure was at every turn. She was fearless, outspoken and "forever finding trouble", making this book a true delight! As stated in the book, "Your story blended the unbelievable into the world of the believable. And yet, most of the unbelievable things that you described actually happened." I enjoyed the literary notes and historical research that was interwoven throughout this book, making it a magical and mystical story--so different from the ballrooms and social-conscious rules of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.

The writing in this book is fine, though there were a number of words that I didn't know, which is annoying. I didn't really like the story much, though, to my surprise. It didn't feel related to Pride and Prejudice at all; I think the plot fell flat. I am not much interested in the fox hunting or golf or wagers. The main character was not Darcy, it was the female cousin telling the story, who I am not sure I actually liked that much. I also do not know why she was married at such a young age. Other than her being married and her husband appearing towards the end of the book, there isn't much in the way of romance. It isn't that this is a poorly written book, it just didn't interest me as much as I expected it to. It is a quick clean read.

This was a good read. There was touch of displaying the effects of someone with head injury , the love of family and the great measures to save one's family. Liked that Mr. Darcy came to the rescue of his cousin and his best friend! The long ordeal ended with a happy ending.

Though I am not a historian,Sofia seems to be acting way too much for that time. I salute her but also was asking , does she have to be that way?
Anyway , if you have the read the previous boks this will be a good to continue her story.

Scarborough, 1826. What starts as an innocent pursuit, that of a fox hunt, leads to trouble for Colonel Fitzwilliam and his daughter Sofia, now fifteen years old. So Darcy's help is requested. But how much trouble can they get in.
An entertaining Pride and Prejudice sequel with its very likeable characters. Another delightful read in this enjoyable series.

The story revolves around fox hunting and Sofia attempting to divert the hunters elsewhere to save a fox. She is contact with her cousin, Darcy, until he joins her battle against the fox hunting as well as clearing the colonel's name of an unfortunate death. Some characters are based on real historical people related to fox hunting and the era, as well as reference from Pride and Prejudice. The book is a pleasant read.

A great read

Another Sofia Elisabete book! This time she’s older and on an adventure with none other than Jane Austen’s beloved Mr. Darcy. Darcy is older too but very much the hero we know and love and as always, the loyal cousin to Sofia’s father Colonel Fitzwilliam. I have taken this book journey from the very beginning when Sofia was a little girl and have loved every bit of it. This being the fourth book, there are things I have come to expect from Ms. Kobayashi; lots of history and culture, lots of mishaps and adventure and a wonderful way of treating serious moments with both sensitivity and wit. Highly recommend.
