Full RTC when I’m back from vacay! ____________________________ Ok, I'm back! I really enjoyed this one, particularly the last half of the book. Some spoilers below, so read with caution.
I will say, sometimes I get a little exhausted by Eva Chase's storylines. I've read a few of her series now, and I feel like she always has her characters being outsmarted by the villain and/or repeatedly making very obviously stupid decisions. It becomes a bit tiring to read 3-5 books in a series where the characters are repeatedly taking 1 step forward and 3 steps back in every book.
With this book, I was a little disappointed to begin with because our 6 main characters are once again captured and being held prisoner by yet another villain. For 6 extremely powerful beings with really deadly powers, it's a little crazy how often they are captured and imprisoned by mere humans. There have now been 3-4 "big bads" in this series, and I'm glad that the author seems to have finally found the last one (Balthazar). I understand that the series has been successful, but it does not need to be so prolonged where villains keep getting added.
All that said, I liked this one. It was pretty slow in the first half, as I found the first 50% to be a bit repetitive of all of the books that came before this in the series. However, things really turned around in the last half of the book. I loved Zian and Griffin's growth in this, both personally in recovering from their past traumas, as well as their budding relationships with Riva. I also LOVED that That was an excellent plot twist and really tied some things together. I wonder if we will ever learn who the parents of the men are.
Some random other thoughts: I liked that Jake is finally starting to get over his insecurity regarding Riva loving Griffin more than him. Jake's whole "I will burn the world down for you" attitude is so amazing. I also missed Dom in the first half of the book--his new insecurity about not being needed made me sad. It's also really cool that they can all share powers between each other now. I'm excited to learn more about Toni and Toni's relationship with Riva's mom. I'm so happy that Rollick is back in the storyline too.
I think the next book will be the best book yet, assuming the characters don't get all stupid again or create some really dumb plan.
This book was about a new bad guy capturing them once again, and forces them to go on missions for him. Except this guy goes to show he is not to be messed with. He is WAY more harsher than all the previous bad guys, and threatens and kills lots of people in this book. As per usual, Riva and her guys don’t want to go through with these missions, but have no choice. So throughout their missions, they complete their jobs while simultaneously finding ways to learn more information about their captor and how to escape. Riva finally is connected with all five of her guys, and through this we learn something new, and another plot twist that’s pretty important. There’s not much of a cliffhanger, but it does lead well into the next book. Ooh, and we finally hear more about the shadowkind which I have been looking forward to since we last saw them. To me, this book was pretty slow until about the 70% mark, but I can’t wait to see how this series will be wrapped up.
Another great book from Eva. It's a little annoying how they are constantly getting trapped by different people but oh well. We do get some surprises in this book which was great. I can't wait to read the 5th book here soon.
Significantly better than book 3, but there was still quite a bit of slog. It took me about halfway to finally start enjoying it. At least they’re actually doing something this time. More things happening, a mystery to uncover. Better pacing.
I was not expecting the side effects of the full bond. Really liked that twist.
Ending was great. Super intrigued about the phoenix hybrid. Ready to finally finish this series.
I do want to note there were a few editing errors that drove me bonkers around the 20% mark. Several different instances where they said “the six of us Firsts” did this, or exchanged a look, etc. WELL DOM WAS IN A COMA SOOO…!?!? Book was straight up gaslighting me making me think I was forgetting an entire character. 🙃

Book: Heartless Foe Read By: Ebook and Audio Author: Eva Chase Genre: Dark Romance Main Characters: Riva, Zian, Griffin, Jake, Dom and Andreas Recommend: Yes Spice: 🌶️️ 🌶️️ 🌶️️ Age recommendation: 16-30+ Years My feelings:
Ohhh turn up the spice! Book 4 is so much spicier then the others and im totally here for it.
”Then she lifts one hand to my face, holding my gaze. “I love you.” The last fragments of my control shatter. “I love you too. I want you. I need you.” Her smile could reignite the sun. “You have me.”
Book 4 follows Riva been captured by the Villain again, and they are trying to find an escape route again. She finds out eh new guy is her bio dad, and his PA ends up helping escape using Rollick to help them.
“When my son was born, they told Willa that she wouldn’t be able to have another child. She always wanted a daughter. So I did what I could to give her one, one I thought she’d eventually be able to meet. If they hadn’t— But you’re still here. You’re here where you belong now. You can take your place in the family.”
I loved the MC development in this book, Jake is being less possessive, and more understanding. Griffin is finally a member of the group again, Zian is working out his issues and asking for help, Dom still feels a bit lost but better, Andreas doesn’t feature a lot. I needed more of him.
“Let’s go inside where it’s warmer and just… hang out together. Let us look after you while you’re getting used to the idea. It definitely doesn’t change anything about how we feel about you.”
Only neg thing I have for these books is that they get recaptured a lot, they don’t seem to be able to say off the radar. I mean they are smart, so why they keep making silly choices??
“The typed words show starkly against the white background of the Notes app. I’m sorry. He isn’t the one I should have been helping. She wouldn’t have wanted this. My gaze jerks to Toni’s face. She offers me a pained smile that matches her apology, the whiff of pheromones she gives off tasting of fear… and sadness.”
All in all great paranormal Rh romance. Great for a younger audience.

I feel like this book could have been 3-4 books instead of 5. The MC’s are constantly being caught and the book has been stale and repetitive . I’m glad there was more character building with griffin, that was the only thing I liked about this book.
The story starts where it left off. We find out what happened and if they remain 6.
You will have worked out from the cliffhanger in the last book, that again they are being taken. These Lunatics are not leaving them alone.
The world build is great, and the characters are written well for the six MCs. I don't gravitate to the younder shadowbloods as well as the MC. I mean, in some books, the side characters can be just as magnetic as the MC, so magnetic they add to the plot and make you wonder if they could have their own story written about them. These do not have that, so I gasp when people die and feel sad if those deaths mean anything to the MC, but that's about it. They do have their moments, though, but the story really gets going when it focuses just on the MCs.
Oh!!! Z!!! bless his huge shifter heart! in this book, there is a moment that is so hot, but also full of victory and acceptance of one's self that it makes you choke up a little. Kinda wish we had time to take in that part, but the plot is fast moving and wouldn't be the story it is if you were not reminded they have no freedom.
our MCs, although caged, are still growing, in power, in love, and in self monster acceptance. They take their wins within each other, and I am so happy even though I'm so angry at the cage and crazy people who have them now. You just wanna scream, "Just leave Shadowblood alone 😭" But also know all of this is making them better despite the villains' attempts to break them.
plenty of steamy moments, as I said they take their wins within each other 😉😏 And it's made steamer because they can't take their time, they have to steal those moments and boy do they steal them, and make some passionate smut!
The ending is another sort of cliffhanger, less "who will survive?" and more "okay we should do something. " I hope the last book lives up to the series. There are only so many times you can kidnap people before it gets samey 😂
This is very same-ish as the last two books. I mean; different bad guy, different location they’re imprisoned in… but yeah, pretty much the same (and dare I say: repetitive filler). I don’t think there’s anything pertinent you need to know from this book beyond the fact their powers expand, and all the guys are now officially in the harem. I think it would have been better off as a trilogy.
took a much needed break from this series but im back. i honestly felt like this was so much more drug out than it ever needed to be. 3 books, max. i really felt like most of this was just recycled tbh. i literally only continued reading for the characters. rollick saved the day & lowkey has my heart. ugh. okay anyways. last book, woooo.

𝜗𝜚 quotes:
- “Indeed. And he’ll remain there, where you can check on him, to help motivate you. As long as you follow your orders, you can ensure the systems supporting him stay on.”
- “It’s always there, Riva. Even when you’re not in the same room. Like an ember smoldering through everything else he’s feeling. Wanting to protect and help you. Wanting you. And when you’re there—when you smile at him or touch him—it flares into a forest fire, blazing through everything else, capturing every part of him. He’d do anything for you, and then he’d do it all over again, and the only thing that would matter is that it made you happy.”
- “That’s what Balthazar’s done to my family. To one of the people I love more than anything in the world. You helped him do it. Maybe you can’t be bothered to justify it to me, but if you’re more than a total idiot, someday you’ll have to justify it to yourself.” Toni looks at Dominic with a faint twist of her mouth that might actually be discomfort. The moment only lasts a couple of beats of my heart before she returns her dark gaze to me, but the edge in her voice has softened. “I know who I owe and what they deserve,” she says. “We have our own loyalties. You’re best off accepting that.”
- IN A BETTER WORLD, THEY’D LIVE. TO MAKE A BETTER WORLD, I’LL DESTROY THEM ALL. TO DESTROY THEM ALL, I HAVE TO CONTROL ALL.
- “Hello, little banshee and company. Don’t worry—no one without our essence in their blood will be able to hear this message. I just wanted you to know that I got yours. I’m not sure how long it’ll take to sort out your latest mess, but I’m on my way.”
- Oh, please, if any higher powers exist at all, let me get through this encounter without coming in my pants first.
- Then she lifts one hand to my face, holding my gaze. “I love you.” The last fragments of my control shatter. “I love you too. I want you. I need you.” Her smile could reignite the sun. “You have me.”
- “When my son was born, they told Willa that she wouldn’t be able to have another child. She always wanted a daughter. So I did what I could to give her one, one I thought she’d eventually be able to meet. If they hadn’t— But you’re still here. You’re here where you belong now. You can take your place in the family.”
- “Let’s go inside where it’s warmer and just… hang out together. Let us look after you while you’re getting used to the idea. It definitely doesn’t change anything about how we feel about you.”
- The typed words show starkly against the white background of the Notes app. I’m sorry. He isn’t the one I should have been helping. She wouldn’t have wanted this. My gaze jerks to Toni’s face. She offers me a pained smile that matches her apology, the whiff of pheromones she gives off tasting of fear… and sadness.

Riva and her five guys have once again awoken in a strange place, well actually Dominic is not awake. In fact, he is trapped in a coma and secured in a transparent plastic box. Insurance. But for whom? Apparently, one of the original group of Guardians who "made" them in a lab and mixed their DNA to give them their powers. Balthazar is smart enough to keep them separate so they can only see him on a screen, not in person. He also has some of the younger Shadowbloods that he proves are disposable. Oh, and then there are the bracelets. But what exactly does he want them for and what, if any, leverage do they have to get Dom back to consciousness? Find out if the group can get out of this madman's clutches.
I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
I think this series would have been a great trilogy. I loved the beginning of this series and I think things are beginning to get a little too drawn out. We are going back and forth between captured and escaped and back again and I feel like I have whip lash. The villain keeps changing but there is nothing different, they are all evil, want to use the Shadowbloods for their own political/ personal gain and nothing changes besides the location of where they are holding everyone. The characters used to be a highlight but they are all blending together and I am bored. I do plan to read the final book in this series because I do still feel invested to see how things end but I was disappointed by this one for sure.
Though this book is just dragging AGAIN, I loved ONE thing about it: the helplessness!
Oh, my! The helpless that the characters felt throughout the book just made me wanna throw the stupid book away!😭😭😭 I just couldn’t take it! I felt their helplessness and I ABSOLUTELY loved it. I, myself, couldn’t think of a way that these people could escape though things worked out in the end.
And finally, Zion overcome his trauma after three books. Good lord, they were dragging out the attraction between him and Riva for SO long. At least that was there.
And the 🌶️ scene with the twins🔥🔥. It was the only scene that was okay in this book. O-K-A-Y. Not good, not better. OKAY. I’m happy that there is some sex scene with more than one guy in each book, for a story like this.
The writing was awful. I had to skim through so much of scenes cuz they were so repetitive. The story in itself is repetitive so I’m not surprised either.
Jacob… he is finally able to handle his temper and his impulsivity at least. Getting a better picture of how his feelings are affecting everyone else. I’m glad to see that for him, though I don’t think he will stop being overprotective of Riva. It was pleasing to see each MC facing their trauma and managing to handle it somehow. And the support that they all have for each other made me speechless. It made me really really happy!
The “mystery” around the series is just predictable and is something I aniticipated before the author even revealed it. I just wish Chase had changed her writing style, maybe that would’ve made the story a bit better.

2.5🌶️ Y’all this one was hard to get through… they’ve been held captive way too much I’m over it lmao. And ain’t no way she f’d Zian before griffin lol. The last like 10 chapters is what got me through this book, I swear if they get caught again I’m leaving lmao. I’m very interested in how this mf is gonna put up a fight against literally ALL the shadowkind and the shadowbloods, like how could anyone defeat them…. Ik he’s creating an “army” but those people aren’t gonna know their powers well… make it make sense.

I could not wait to finish this book, it was like pulling teeth to get through. Same plot, boring plot twists, and the bad guy gets away again… like how many times can you write the same plot without basically plagiarizing yourself. I’m honestly excited for the next book because it will be the last book and I can be done with this series. I just hope the last book doesn’t disappoint or I would have wasted a year on this series.
This series so far is well written and has an engaging storyline but come on.... How many times are the main characters going to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again . They get free return get captured get free again return get captured again . This could easily have been a 3 book series 5 is stretching it and honestly I'm at the point of rolling my eyes and not finishing
The writing is good but my golly I can only take so much of the captured- escaped- captured again plot in the same series. I loved the first three books but was highly disappointed at this book and how repetitive it felt to the third book. I’m trying to finish through but I’m at a place where I can finally let this series go. I made it through 77% of this book. I think this would have been perfect as a trilogy. I also wish we got more with the shadow kind.
I have been waiting for when one of the guys would finally let his walls down and go further with Riva and was so happy how it happened in this book! I also loved seeing the group finally become a unit and what happened after (no spoilers I promise!). I felt so bad for the group, with how they were treated. If they thought their captivity was bad before, it was a cake walk compared to this. We get some answers about the baddie, some amazing twists you don’t see coming, and we get some cameos again which will make the reader very happy haha.
I was trying to figure out what mad the big kahuna/villain tick and we still don’t know all the answers but we know he suffers a loss and makes him kind of snap. I was happy to see some of the people at the facility got their karmic justice after how they treated Riva and her guys. I cannot wait for them to destroy B after how he treated some of the young shadowbloods. Like we didnt know who was going to go down next, it created a lot of suspense and anxiety, let me tell you haha. I hope the others are ok, I hope we can be reunited with them and they can help take down this evil man and his company. The steam in this one was fabulous too btw! And the power expansions were fantastic, my favorite part of the book was seeing what would happen next. And again not spoiling anything but towards the end....the power stuff....SO GOODDDD!
I think for me this was one of the better ones of the series but there were some these that seemed drawn out/repetitive from earlier in this series that may/could have been chopped up a bit or made so it wasn’t similar internal monologues/feelings. That is my only critique of this one. It was close to a 4.5 our of 5 star rating but I rounded down for that reason.
Narration was good again by both narrators. The male narrator does such a good job with dark/monster characters with his tenor and inflections, really brings them to life. The female narrator did a great job with Riva’s rollercoaster of emotions. She had to portray a wide range of feelings and she really exuded the emotions and brought the scene to life in my head. I could feel how nervous but excited she was with the troubled guy of her harem (when dealing with intimacy). I could feel her anxiety but determination when confronting the bad guy at the end to help save her guys. Definitely will be listening to more of them in the future ❤️
Book four, and we a have new, potentially more dangerous, definitely more unhinged bid bad to contend with for Riva and her guys. All of them are learning more about their talents/powers, all while also learning to control them more but also being exploited for them at the same time. Definitely a frustrating and challenging situation. In my opinion, this book had the most character growth across the board for everyone, and I really loved seeing their journeys take such interesting and substantial turns.
As the story progresses, I find myself wanting to give less and less detail in my reviews, because, well, spoilers, and part of what keeps this series so interesting is all the small (and sometimes big) twists and turns that keep you on your toes and want to keep reading. But the gist of this book has the group being held again, this time with much more difficult means to escape and steeper consequences looming over their head for missteps. They are forced into difficult situations, with little choice but to comply, and not everyone makes it through this trial unscathed. That said, the near impossible feel of their situation doesn’t deter them from their ultimate desire for freedom. Meanwhile, each of them continues to work through their own personal demons and there are some absolutely brilliant developments in that regard that really help solidify the team even further by the end of the book.
I absolutely love how the relationship and dynamic between them all has grown and evolved. Not just between Riva and the guys, but also between the guys as well. The spice level in this book actually starts on the lower end, but by the end, it definitely makes up for it, and we get some great interactions and fantastic heat. We also have the newer, younger shadowbloods that the team have taken on a mentor/protector role for, and there is most definitely a larger found family dynamic really starting to take hold there as well.
Continuing to love this series on audiobook, the narration is excellent and fits the characters so well. I’m really feeling the emotions and more depth to the story, and I think that is most definitely contributing to my overall enjoyment of these books.
I think this book and the last one could have been skipped. They're both repetitive, and all six of them are damsel in distresses, especially the guys. Only Riva has ideas, it seems, and, although I enjoyed their autonomy in the past books (because they weren't just tools used for the mc to get off), this one seemed to lack more of that. Sure, they were locked in a pretty cage (again), but come on.
I don't know. I was bored. This book and the last one. Hopefully the next one gets somewhat better. This book has a solid ending, I guess, but there's so much empty space in this book of no one doing anything but one another.
Don't get me wrong, I love the way Eva Chase writes, and I love the depth of the characters, but this series has got me in a chokehold of eye rolls and snarky comments. It definitely feels like one of those books you don't believe when someone says they "read it for the plot" if you know what I'm saying. All I want is more story and less "we're super powerful but helpless and trapped, let's go blow off some steam by having group alone time."
I try to keep my reviews positive, so I will say these things: I love the style in writing, the creativity with the powers (especially the development toward the end), and the mc Riva, who is strong in her own way. The relationships between her and the guys (I've come to realize I don't like harems through this series) seem genuine and deeply rooted.
Heartless Foe (Shadowblood Souls Book 4) ~~ Just when you think they’ve faced the worst horrors, this book proves you wrong. The enemies here are colder, smarter, and far more dangerous ~ and the cost of past decisions becomes impossible to ignore.
This book leans heavily into consequences. The guys are forced to truly confront what they did to Riva, not just acknowledge it. Meanwhile, Riva continues to grow into someone who refuses to be underestimated ever again. She’s no longer just surviving ~ she’s planning, fighting back, and taking control.
The emotional weight is heavy, the action is intense, and the trust rebuilding feels earned, not handed out. I loved that nothing is simple in this book ~ every victory comes at a price.
Listening on Audible during the darker scenes gave me chills, while reading let me slow down and really sit with the emotional moments.
This book left me tense, invested, and absolutely ready for the finale.
I would definitely recommend this book and series and can’t wait to start on the next book. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll just have to read this series yourself ~ you won’t regret it.
Balthazar is even crazier than the others who have improisoned Riva and the guys. He kills some of the younger shadowbloods to keep the First compliant. Then he sends the rest of them away. Riva and the guys still go on missions for him. They are also forced to train their powers. They are all increasing in power but decreasing in control. Riva wants to know more about Balthazar's motivations. Then he drops a bomb on her. Riva is Balthazar's daughter. His wife and son were murdered somehow with monsters involved. He says that she is back with her family and will continue to fight the monsters with him, to stand beside him. Riva gets a message out to Rollick to rescue them. Toni ultimately decides to help them. The shadowkind set a fire, they escape down a tunnel, Balthazar gets away. They meet Rollick at the end of the tunnel. With the help of a hybrid phoenix, they get the manacles off. Toni makes it to the RV too. She tells them that Balthazar stole a laptop from Rollick's hotel while he was distracted. Heartless Foe by Eva Chase is an urban fantasy romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Amber Lee Connors and Adam Gold. This is the fourth book in the Shadowblood Souls series.
I am absolutely loving this series! I can't help but binge the audiobooks in one sitting. I am loving the relationship between Riva, Jacob, Zian, Andreas, Griffin and Dominic. I really enjoyed getting all of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
The book ended on another amazing cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't wait to jump into the final book in the series Fearsome Dream.
Amber and Adam did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.
I would recommend this series if you're looking for an urban fantasy romances, why choose romances, or romantic suspense.
Riva and her guys go from the frying pan to the fire as they are finding themselves stuck in a gilded cage. I could feel their anger and frustration through the pages as they discover they are being held under the thumb of a maniac. They are treated as objects as they try to figure out the motive of their most recent captor who is sending them on missions. Trying to find allies is a challenge as they navigate their latest obstacle to freedom. They must figure out how to manage their anger and frustrations as they work on solutions. Another great read as they all find their inner connections to each other, I could sense their hope and a refusal to give up their freedom. A well paced read with plenty of passion, suspense and tense situations. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
Book four of five. Another fantastic RH series from Eva Chase! Huge fan of Riva and her men, and a nice BIG harem of 5 this time too! The six of them combined have some serious skills, held captive by a powerful organisation and all teamed together until one escape attempt goes horribly wrong and Riva is removed from the others.
I am not a fan of bully romances, and struggled a little with this first book as there was a LOT of angst and pain, and refusal to accept that perceptions of what happened might have been twisted to fit a master plan none of them were aware of. It takes a good few missions, long discussions, heroic moments and even an almost ending before the men realise what they could be sabotaging.
This is a SLOOOOW burn for Eva, and not my fave but once they get there, they really do get there, and the plot within a plot within an even bigger plot was impressive.
⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 **3.5 Stars — Darker tone but solid progress**
Heartless Foe had a lot of intensity packed into it, but it did start to feel a bit *too* similar to the previous book. Once again, Riva and her guys are trapped and being used — only this time, the situation is even worse. I liked that the stakes were higher and the danger more intense, but I was hoping for a little more variety in the setup.
That said, the overall plot keeps moving forward nicely, and the relationships between Riva and her men continue to deepen in meaningful ways. There’s definitely some good character development here, and even though it felt a little repetitive, it still managed to keep me hooked.
A solid continuation to the series — darker, tense, and full of emotional moments that make you want to see where it all goes next.
Captured again. Imprisoned and forced to go on jobs they don’t want to do. They can’t say no, or people they care about are sacrificed as incentive. Riva and the guys feel like they’re in a hopeless situation, but still never give up. They’re gathering information at every opportunity and finding small ways to rebel against their captor, Balthazar. As always, there are a few surprises in the book. One leaves Riva doubting herself. One gives them all a renewed sense of hope and exhilaration. And the one at the very end left me the most shocked, and eager to read the next book. I’m really enjoying this paranormal RH series. Yes, there is spice, but there is definitely more plot, action and mystery than the sexy times. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
