After Doug rescues Patti from her rocket, which had been in the path of a runaway comet, they both end up lost in space and now must rely on each other to get back home safely. Original.
I've been revisiting all my old books before handing them over to my kid, to see if they still hold up or not. This particular one conveys a central and rather heavy-handed lesson about getting along with friends and making compromises, so there's undoubtedly some value in that. However, it doesn't make for a great introduction to Doug. It throws names at you like Baby Dirtbike and Mr. Swirly, as though you should already be familiar with them, and I suppose the target audience in 1998 probably was. Additionally, I had expected the story to be a little more exciting than the one-and-a-half-page action sequence sandwiched between Doug and Skeeter's petty bickering.
One of the kids started this in a R.E.A.D. session. He's not familiar with the series (that makes two of us), and he's fascinated by names like Patti Mayonnaise. I need to study the cast of characters from the Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug
I might make note of some of the YouTube videos, too, and pass the list to the mom.
This child was the youngest of the kids I had, and he didn't get far in the book. I told him he could read it at home on his own or bring it back next month. (We got through the first two chapters.)
This is the best book in the world. I am Going to read. Doug is my favorite cartoon since I was a child watching both the Nickelodeon series (even though it was part of The 90s Are All That" block at midnight) and the Disney series. But this is the very first Chapter book from Disney's Doug and I am still seeing in from Youtube.
